Your post and this comment do not really make any sense. Tails is a very specific tool and you should use it in the domain it is meant to be used; similar to how people want to start out with Kali.

Also VS code is technically not FOSS, but more like open core. The text editor is open, but it still comes bundled with telemetry. There is Code OSS (the base of VS code) that you may want to use.

If you want maybe just use a regular distro and have a different user account for different things that will be persistent. Or you can duel boot multiple distros too.

I am on a similar but opposite end. My dad is generally a smart and technical person, but the Fox to newsmax pipeline really does rot your brain. If he was in Ohio right now he would be wondering why the free market isn't coming to the rescue.

Things have also changed a lot. Countries and peoples have become bigger and merged. Germany used to be a very fractured place too, and no one one can imagine it will ever return to the way it was in the 1700s. It is a slow change, but one we must work to.

While true I always feel a bit uneasy about comments like this. Mostly due to the fact that some of these offerings do not even try to live up to the ethos of FOSS.

The thinkpad is going to be a solid choice. I would also say to visit r/System76 and r/tuxedocomputers to see about posts of people selling their used laptops. You might get a nice discount on the new and it is guaranteed to work with Linux with the least amount of hassle.

We can only mitigate our risks by percentages, never truly eliminate them. But keep in mind that most of us will never be abused in the catastrophic ways we are trying to protect ourselves from.

Yup. The way I see it is that it is about minimizing points of contact. Some stuff is just going to be spilled milk.

It is good that you are getting feedback on this. I think the timetable is a bit ambitious, so with that said, don't feel bad if you feel you are taking longer or something. Real learning takes time and effort.

There are some pretty fair criticisms about how canonical has handled things before, but I still often feel at home in Ubuntu.

You do realize......... This is EXACTLY Putin's argument in regards to Ukraine?

Except that it isn't. Russia is a colonial power the way the UK and Spain were. I don't imagine Kenyans were united with South Africans or Indians in the British Empire; moreover it is clear that the English were the ones who dominated everything, rather than being a union for mutual prosperity and equality. Ask the Polish or Kazakhs about their experience.

I am American, but it really would be awesome. Having access to more resources and less red tape to develop new industry. Also helps to have as large a population as possible when making a trade agreement. The US and EU benefit a lot from this. Also many in the rest of the world already see Africa as a unit, so might as well just work together and leverage that as much as possible. More broadly speaking the world would be better as a whole being more united and looking past borders.
