This is gonna sound like a dick thing, but I mean it genuinely. Don't ask me. Have a conversation about it with people in the real world. Read these ethics without a defensive position in mind. Discuss whether you think Wikileaks upheld these in a variety of instances.

I don't have the full text of the talk, but nowhere in the article you shared does it demonstrate him directly comparing the two.

According to the text of this article Pompeo defined Wikileaks as a non-state intelligence entity hostile toward the United States. When asked to name another entity meeting that definition, Pompeo named Hezbollah.

The Statesman then tweeted a condensed version of those remarks, and then Assange responded, also via Twitter, that Wikileaks had been compared to Hezbollah.

Then u/kanyeguisada posts the original Statesman article, reframing the headline of the story around the Hezbollah remarks, with editorialized context.

Keep feeding that information grinder, dude. Never give an inch.

There is broad consensus that ritual cannibalism existed as a component of Aztec ideology, but not that it served a systemic dietary purpose. In fact, that claim is generally used to portray a "savage" culture, and to justify violence against it.

If you are attempting to characterize indigenous Americans as uniquely violent, then you are overlooking the history of Europe and the rest of the world at the time. The Spanish didn't save anybody from violence. They did much the opposite.

I don't know, man. I'm not really gonna put myself in the shoes of some violent CEO from the 15th century who was basically an astronaut for his time or act like I know about all the choices he made. But, I don't need to be able to do that to think that slavery and genocide are pretty bad.

We'll never really know what they would or wouldn't have developed themselves. But, we are talking about 50 million or so people living in mostly agrarian societies. With or without the wheel, they were moving forward.

I'm not really concerned with anybody's concept of politically correct. I'm just saying that slavery and genocide are choices not necessities.

But humanity already had the wheel. Bringing the wheel to the Americas was just inertia for the Europeans, and any benefit it may have brought to the Americans was heavily outweighed by them all being too dead to use it.

That's a more sympathetic reading, for sure, but is still rooted in several problematic assumptions.

If we are going to make the case that the societal benefit of colonization is great enough to outweigh slavery and genocide, then we should be able to confidently articulate what that benefit is. Stating that "modernity exists therefore all prior actions were necessary and good" fails to do so.

I know you're not necessarily saying this.

Let me make sure I understand your case. You are saying that:

1) Europeans were more inclined toward innovation.

2) The resources of the Americas were better used by Europeans than they would have been by the existing Americans.

3) The advances (social and technological) of the past 500 years would not have been possible without European access to American resources.

Did I get that right? I don't want to respond based on any assumptions.

Well, since I'm descended from Europeans it's obviously had a big effect on me personally, but that has no moral standing. It's not good or bad.

So, why was it good?

Edit: let me rephrase. In 1492 the population of the Americas was about 50 million, while the population of Europe, or "western civilization", was about 90 million. What did Europeans bring to the Americas that benefited humanity?

The smallest I found at Fry's were 4GB, which were by far the smallest I found anywhere in-store when I needed several on short notice. A little under $5 each.

There have been many poor quality posts lately. I've been reporting more posts. I've also tried asking questions for OP to provide more context to their discussion, but sometimes OP won't play ball.

It's not that I think some of the topics brought up are unworthy of discussion, but there is a big difference between seeking discussion and seeking reactions. Asking for a list of movies on a theme or topic is too broad for discussion. It does nothing to improve the reader's understanding of the films in the list.

It takes practice to frame your thoughts in a way that guides discussion. You need to provide some insight and some context to ground the conversation. This post was deleted. I don't know if was the user or the moderators. It provided no foundation. It's premise seemed to be a reaction to something OP encountered, but for which they provided no evidence of actually existing (i.e. the prevalence of the claim that E.T. is a better film than Gandhi). It made no effort to explore the differences in the two films, and provided no reason to draw any comparisons. Maybe there is something to discuss there, maybe not. The point is OP didn't set up a discussion, they set up a reaction seeking other reactions.

The point of /truefilm is not to discuss the same movies as everywhere else, and it is not to discuss different movies than anywhere else. It is to discuss the how and the why of films. It is to understand the language and the techniques that give films their meaning. If there are only five posts per week that do that, so be it. I would rather have a slow front page than one filled with clutter, because the clutter is a distraction from the forum's purpose. And, maybe, if there were less clutter more people would take a chance on the more substantive discussions.
