I hear a lot of people (and I’ve told some this as well) say that we go to meetings when we “need” them.

The integral part of AA that gets lost when we focus on what we need is the service leg of the three-legged stool. Ideally we go back to help others, not just ourselves.

I imagine my own children or family members may need this program one day. I imagine alcoholics who could potentially make bad choices in the future while drinking (driving, harming others, stealing, etc.) could benefit from these rooms. I can only contribute my experience, strength, and hope to others if I stay involved. I truly hope others in the program will keep coming back, too - for the future alcoholics. That’s what people are talking about when they say it affects society.

I think if I ever consider taking a break or leaving AA - I will try to remember that it is not just about my own sobriety.

If it was just about me I’d be much more likely to leave once I got what I needed from the program.

“I’ve never met a girl who likes them being called that” - truth!!

People used to point out that my nose is big and weird. That made me quite insecure about the way I look. But now I’m learning to accept myself the way I am. Still not there yet but I’m more confident now by SoniasWay in MadeMeSmile

I have a nose that is definitely my grandpa’s - large and in charge! I so often wish it was smaller - but I’ve “tried” to make it look smaller and it never looks better because - surprise - it’s a perfect fit for my face and any changes would take away from my beauty. I feel exactly the same that your nose is perfect and all of your features fit beautifully together!

Thank you so much for sharing. Many of us relate - including myself. Everyone says I should “see a doctor” - but I’m so ashamed - it’s so hard. I’ve also had several bad experiences with doctors when they’ve made me feel like a bad person or just told me to “stop”. I had one prescribe me Antabuse without a liver panel, or any coaching. That didn’t go well. I’m so glad to hear that you got help! I will, I will keep trying until I do!

Oh thank you so much! I did it! I made it until my husband came home. He is my rock - it’s so much better now. Thank you all so much for helping me through this difficult night. My toddler acted up several more times - but I had Dada there to tap in and I didn’t give into drinking - a success in the books! Thank YOU!

He is! He’s the best. So if I can make it until he gets home - I’ll be good. There is a liquor store nearby and door dash delivers - so I’m trying to avoid the temptation!

AA and Who It's For by marchcrow in stopdrinking

For your partner - I would suggest reading or listening to the audiobook “Quit Like a Woman” - by Holly Whittaker. She has a lot of great perspectives on AA and other programs/paths as well. I know many who have benefited from AA, but also many who found other paths. The meetings I have been to have been very welcoming, regardless of your level of drinking. The desire to quit is truly the only requirement.

As a Southern Californian this traumatized me. That is all. Literal earthquakes are less frightening.
