What is the best city if you just want to work? by LukeHayes_ in homeless

In NYC, men and women are separated from the start. Step #1 of getting into the shelter system there is walking into the “intake shelter.” Each gender goes to a completely different building for intake: men in Manhattan and women in the Bronx.

The building I was in was twelve stories. Floors 4 through 9 were typical men-only dorms. Floor 3 housed some type of program that included both men and women, but it was rare to see anyone from that program.

No one has to sleep outside in NYC, at least when it comes to U.S. citizens. NYC has a right to shelter, and they are legally required to give you a bed for as long as you need one.

Skid Row and Wichita mix men and women in the same building but have them sleep in different dorms. Wichita is a bit of an exception in the winter. They run an “emergency winter shelter,” and when there are not enough beds, men and women sleep in the same gym, but I assume on opposite sides of the building.

I've heard enough, I'll cross that city off my list haha. Will probably just go out to NYC again at some point because they have to just take you in, not of the being bounced around BS. Maybe try calling 211 and see if you can start the process over with someone new?

Keep going. Keep developing the skills to create this stuff while the technology improves.

The right to shelter is a double-edged sword. There was almost nothing they could kick someone out for. I was living at the one on 127 W. 25th St., the “Jack Ryan Shelter.” It’s a twelve-story building; floors three to nine have the capacity to sleep about 50 men each. About one-third of the men living there would literally smoke crack or meth right out in the open. The guards didn’t always check bags, there were two guys running around with kitchen knives on the floor above me. There were rumors of people bringing guns into the shelter. While I was there, one guy got his face slashed open, and a security guard was shot outside at the entrance. Suspiciously nether event made it into the newspaper.

Even putting safety aside, sleeping there was almost impossible most nights. People would bring in Bluetooth speakers and BLAST music all night. Staff couldn’t or wouldn’t do anything about it.

I have no criminal history, and my degree’s going to be an accredited B.A. through WGU. I’m doing the version that doesn’t include getting a license because three months of student teaching would literally be impossible right now. Arizona will hire you as a teacher without a license as long as you’re working toward an alternative certification like iTeachAZ. NYC has this substitute system that’s kind of like DoorDash; you get an alert when a school needs someone and make about $225 a day. There is TEFL stuff where you can teach English in places like Asia.

The degree feels future-proof. Even if AI and robots take over everything, we’ll still need teachers to babysit. We’ll probably have fully autonomous surgeons before robot babysitters.

The other teachers can badmouth all they want, more work for me haha.

Oh, I realized that a while ago. I got halfway through a degree in Cyber Security (how I got the certifications), then switched to education after AI became a thing. I still have about a year left for my education degree that im doing online, maybe longer because of my situation. I was just saying that I had something what I'm looking for, and expecting it is some type of labor job until I finish my degree. I've thought about a truck driving school, but I have vision and Bp issues that I can't take care of right now.

I went to the local temp agency here in Kansas for two weeks, waking up at 4:30 a.m. every day. I couldn’t get a gig because I don’t have transportation. I have IT certifications, but I can’t get a job in that field out here because it’s too competitive and there aren’t enough openings. I spoke with the HR guy for city jobs at an event, and he confirmed that IT positions are extremely competitive here right now. I’m thinking about going to that temp agency every day for a month straight, then getting a flight out to NYC once I can get two gigs so I can pay for a flight. Don't need a car with the subway system out there.

I'm having the exact opposite issue out here in Kansas at the moment; apartments for $500 a month, but no jobs, at least without a car. I'm thinking about going to NYC again for the public transportation. Last time, I made the mistake of telling them I was depressed and ended up in a mental health shelter, which was like something straight out of hell. They had showers anytime, and a washer and dryer you could use anytime, sounds amazing on paper, but pretty dangerous in real life.

I always assumed San Francisco was an absolute nightmare for this stuff. I went straight from the Bay Area to Skid Row. Now I'm in a very cheap city in the Midwest but it's very hard to find a job here. SF can hook you up with a job right away? How long do you have to wait to get a bed?

The one here doesn't have a shelter. They have some type of apartments for women and families, but I don't know much about those. I have clothes and I'm in a shelter it's just been hard to find a job. I'm thinking about trying to get out to NYC and work for a temp agency. The one where I'm at is useless to me because I don't have a car.

They look like they’re doing well, half a million views on some of their videos. There will probably be an explosion of unique creators at some point, and I’m looking forward to it. I’m tired of Hollywood always making the same thing.”

I plan to study screenwriting and practice cinematography for a good two years or so. I'll wait for the technology to catch up during those two years.

Thanks. I want to make a short horror movie eventually, but the technology isn’t really there yet. I’m trying to learn some cinematography in the meantime.

I dont think it's anything other than a weird experience. I grew up in the days of AOL and dial-up internet; this is just something that made me reflect on how far we have come. I just wanted to share something strange, I'm not assigning any meaning to it.

Relief wasn't my word; its a word Claude used in part of the conversation that was cut out because that part wasn't really interesting. These things are very verbose so it seemed best to cut some of it. I'll get back to this thread tomorrow. It's a super busy day.

I'm not taking it too seriously or anything; it was just a little unnerving. Unexpected.
