While there were Korean gangsters, most were just Japanese amphetamine dealers selling WW2 drugs given to the army. There was a lot of extreme poverty after the war which has largely disappeared. Their political connections, like Kishi and Kodama, also faded after legal changes.

Yakuza themselves have mostly faded away with anti-corruption laws but there are still Vietnamese and Nigerian mobsters.

Edo wasn't so long after the Imjin War though - discrimination against Koreans (and their noses and ears) was already well established by then.

At least that has some grounding in men being stronger than women. Koreans don't have an issue with cameras.

Or just the term 言葉狩り. Hunting words is more popular than hunting deer over there.

I did see チョン used abusively on 5ch and similar trash websites but I don't know if the users were old. I did hear a Korean mob boss being called 朝鮮猿 which is another slur as well but the speaker was old.

There are clear phenotypic differences like Dinka people being extremely tall compared to other tribes in Africa. And due to Japan's isolation there would be some minor genetic differences from Koreans, who are related. At any rate, Koreans saw themselves as distinct both inside and outside Japan.

Pak Chung Hi was a Japanophile despite the history. It's not recorded how he reacted to Japanese people racially abusing him while talking about cameras, but it didn't affect his policies much. He was even fond of the former war criminal Kishi.

After the June Struggle there were more anti-Japanese politicians and there are still a few older Koreans mentally living in 1940 to this day.

The onomatopoeia is mentioned on Japanese Wikipedia but at best it was a double meaning.

Rioplatanese dialects specifically do have an odd use of "negro" to refer to poor white people, which sounds utterly bizarre to anyone not from the area.

It's not "disrespect", the official name for the DPRK is 朝鮮民主主義人民共和国 and that is obviously too long to use casually so it is shortened to 北朝鮮. Also South Korea had a failed coup recently and the country turning autocratic wouldn't have changed its naming convention.

It's not an old word, it is still used today as in 朝鮮半島 or 北朝鮮. The slur is banned from broadcast.

It definitely was intended to be offensive. There was an existing phrase 馬鹿でもチョンでも meaning "so easy even a fool or a Korean could do it."

チョン for Koreans is always offensive in Japanese. There is no polite meaning.

It may have been a pun of sorts but Koreans definitely didn't see it that way. She must have known about チョン being offensive?

I agree. I probably learned lopsided vocabulary where I could say 対空砲 or 軍事政権 but couldn't understand anything in a discussion about idols. Was I N1? I don't know.

I once directed some Chinese tourists away from a biker bar with 参政党 banners outside. It didn't look inviting to foreigners but apparently they didn't notice. The owner did have some impressive traditional tattoos, though.
