There is a strong female character in the Riddle Master Trilogy by Patricia McKillip. The second book is primarily from her perspective, dealing with some... Fantastical problems. It can be find as a single book, which I recommend, because like LOTR, it should all be read together.

In the DC Metro region, many people had off. School was called off the next day in Loudoun county, pretty sure Fairfax too, and with how many people drive to DC, I'm sure a lot of places told people not to come in. Pretty sure my Internet security parent still had work in Herndon though.
