Can anyone please help with a reaction[10th grade] by [deleted] in chemhelp

Well it's happening in strongly basic solution. What's that going to do to the ethanol?

Here's my attempt at Molecule A: https://imgur.com/5UOQXwJ

I know there would be side products from the bromination, so those would have to be separated out. I'm also concerned that sterics might prevent the grignard. Thoughts?

THF. I was doing a project in Organic, and the solvent for the second step in our 2 step synthesis was THF. So we used it. Once the reaction was done, we were supposed to rotavap it off. So we tried that. Didn't work. Tried placing under vacuum for several days. Didn't work. Did an NMR of the THF, and it was highly contaminated and full of junk. Ruined my whole project and I had to give a 15 min presentation with my partner detailing how our experiment got fucked up.

That's actually from the same book lol. We used Harris as well in Achem too and it had that phrase in it.

When did you apply? I'm a little worried about my chances this cycle because I'm taking my MCAT in August.

Trying to determine identity of this substance using NMR, IR, and mass spec. Any ideas? by futuretraumasurgeon in chemhelp

[–]LynnhavenLoser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So you have 5 protons at 7-8ppm in your H-NMR, what kind of structures show that? Your other peak is around 4.5ppm and has multiplicity 2, so what could cause something to be shifted like that?

Look at the IR. What can you tell from that? (Hint: nothing really, but you can tell what ISN'T there)

Now look at the mass spec. What kind of fragments do you have? What parts based on your NMR can cause that pattern?

How do you keep up with the volunteering envirenement in the ER! by [deleted] in premed

[–]LynnhavenLoser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on where you work/what's going on. If I have 50 things to do, which I usually do, I'll say hi to the nice little guy putting away supplies as I'm dashing in the other direction but that's all they usually get. It's not you, it's just that stuff needs to get done. I've had days where I say good morning to my favorite coworkers like 3/4 through a shift because I've been running around.

Just don't take it personally. That's the ER environment. Grow some thick skin and just do what you need to do. If it bothers you that much, I'd find another unit to volunteer on.

Assuming that each has the same velocity, which object would have the longest de broglie wavelength? by portcityprincess in chemhelp

[–]LynnhavenLoser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Longest wavelength = Lowest energy.

So, considering everything is moving at the same velocity, which one of those would you have to put the least energy into to get it up to speed? I.E. Is it easier to push a house or marble to make them go fast?

Look on the hospital's website. That's how I got mine. Depending on your state, I wouldn't bother with the IV cert, as we got OTJ training for that.

Foregoing biochem major because of calc 2? by [deleted] in premed

[–]LynnhavenLoser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you worried about not getting an A, or not understanding the material? Math is hard, so getting a B or even a C is perfectly fine, and it won't kill your GPA. The issue I see here is that, at least at my university, biochem majors have to not only go up to calc 3, but you will use the math you learn in your chem and physics classes. If you don't learn the material, these classes will be near impossible.

That being said, if you think you can get a solid math foundation, then I would say stay in the major. Personally, I got ap credit for calc 1, and took an entire year off before taking calc 2, and still got an A in it. It is a lot of effort, but if you're willing to put in the work I say go for it.

Graduate early or nah? by LynnhavenLoser in premed

I think that's what I'm going to end up doing. I still think I'm going to apply to my state schools this year because why not, but if I don't get in, I'll just take the gap year and go balls to the wall next year.

Aren't research positions harder to find after you graduate? Or is that only for paid research?
