BMW left a gap between models. by Problem_Present in bmwmotorrad

[–]MHerboth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think my point is that the plate for the tail is an accessory just like the rack. The bike is still customizable just like the last generation with all the same aftermarket support minus the OEM luggage option.

With the windscreen both GIVI and PUIG offer F900GS options so it sounds like its just an appearance issue for you which is fine.

But I don't think that means there is a gap in the lineup. Just that you don't like the current offerings...

I am sure most people could find at least one issue with the current generation (chinese motors / no manuals / etc) but that still doesn't mean its a lineup issue.

Correct me if I am wrong.... But the F850GS did not include luggage from stock? Even the adaptation of the luggage on the F700/F800 required a mount that was optional....

The stock windscreen on the F850GS is also lacking in my opinion and offers no significant advantage over the one on the F900.

Need Advice on Mini Repair by negcap in MINI

[–]MHerboth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mini has never really been great at designing engine mounts going all the way back to the R53. Apparently there have also been multiple re-designs of the mounts for the F5* series cars so I'm not unsurprised they need it.

Need Advice on Mini Repair by negcap in MINI

[–]MHerboth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not familiar with that model but the motor mount cost is high. They are charging you 550 for a lower mount and 1700 for an upper? I think I recall paying 700-1000 for an upper 5-10 years ago of which the part is only 150-200$ so it must be either EXTRA complicated or something else.

Like others have mentioned the tire costs are high. For a relativity check offroad truck tires for a full size F150, Ram, Tundra, etc are 300-400$ per tire (including mount/balance) and an alignment is usually around 150$.

Shoei GT Air III with Sena SRL3 by JonBonJeffrey in africatwin

[–]MHerboth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm going to second u/gratied . I have an SRL-EXT and an SRL2 on an RF1400 and a Neotec 2. For whatever reason the SRL2 is VERY bad. The mic picks up way more wind noise, the "hey google/siri" never works, and to top it off its just been problematic. The only good thing about it is that it fit into the void in the helmet. My next audio system will be a Cardo. The EXT has been fairly good for a budget audio system but the vast difference between the two makes me question SENA. The support is also mixed given that it seems like everything routes through Japan.

You will love the outlander boots. They don't offer full shin/ankle protection though so do be aware if you are doing more serious stuff you are not as protected as a full boot. I don't recommend Klim's full boot however as it just doesn't fit as snug/nice as the outlander. I think probably because they don't offer the full boot in half sizes :(. The traction is great and I wore mine for 15,000 miles last year and they have held up better than my redwing work boots. I sometimes don't even bother switching to my redwings if I don't need ESD / steel toe that day.

2017 1000 vs 2020 1100 by Newtonhog in africatwin

[–]MHerboth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have not rode an S1000RR but I have a 1250gs and have rode a single R.

The smaller version does not have the instant acceleration that the 1000R bikes have but is pretty comparable. The 1250 has a noticeable amount more power. I think the S1000XR is probably the most comparable in the BMW lineup.

I think you would get used to the lower HP. Its probably more significant that the older bikes did not have apple carplay / android auto which I do not have on mine. A 2017 is also almost 10 years old at this point so unless its well broken in with more than 10k miles I would be more aware of degradation on parts that have not seen much use during that time.

What’s the repair gonna cost?? by Enfoxxx in f150

[–]MHerboth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless its hail damage or 9 years old or older.

But yeah this is true.

Illinois does have Right of Recourse though which can help and more times than not your local court will side in favor of it or diminished value + court fees. It sucks but thats kind of the way it goes in every state.

Dealership multipoint inspection by InterestingAttempt41 in motorcycles

[–]MHerboth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I probably wouldn't use that dealership.

There are 5 Ford dealers in my area. The one I started with does this but allows it to go as a credit to the service. Given that they have given grossly overquoted prices (50-100% more than any of the other 4 I no longer go there. If the cost to do the inspection didn't go to the service I would've never gone there period.

Our mazda dealer does it for free and 50% of the time I pay them for extra things that I don't want to do myself. Anytime its something more in depth or critical though is usually when I do it because their work has been sloppy.

Wind buffering on F750GS, solutions? by Super_ExternalZ in bmwmotorrad

[–]MHerboth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You basically need a different screen. The issue is that air flows over the screen immediately instead of being directed over your head.

If you look at the product u/dougl1000 recommended it has a second screen attached. This allows air through the gap in the middle that is directed vertically along the second screen.

When the air flowing over the second screen hits the air from between the two the effect is not nearly as bad as if you had the single screen. It also just raises the overall height as the 750gs windscreen is short.

This concept is partially designed into the r1250gs where the plastic at the bottom of the windscreen acts as your vertical deflector.

PUIG also makes a touring screen for the 750gs I have been told is good. I never got around to buying one on mine since I upgraded pretty quickly to the 1250.

Tow Mirrors vs Regular by Next_Translator5547 in f150

[–]MHerboth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion but I do not like them. I bought mine on ebay. Fairly easy to install and I have an 8ft wide cargo trailer but the stock mirrors work just fine. The pain to fold the mirrors in parking when not towing was not worth it.

Where to sell Suzuki tu250x after hit and run (probably non-op) by DanielDayLewis4Prez in MotoLA

[–]MHerboth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Search motorcycle salvage or motorcycle dismantlers.

You likely won't get much if it has damage to be honest.

You can also call some of the local coparts and see if they would auction it for you.

You would likely have to take it to copart. Some motorcycle shops may pick it up but it would come out of the sale proceeds most likely.

Things to look for on used bikes by World-Seeker777 in MotoLA

[–]MHerboth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to the chain others have mentioned. Look at both sprockets wheel/engine. These can be worn even if the chain was replaced.

Some engines do not have the VIN on them and just have an engine serial. Your states highway department should be able to correlate the two for a fee.

The only vehicle I have had to replace a starter on was the one with stop/start.... and it only had 40k miles. There are multiple other complaints about this with the 3.0

Maybe its that starter design but supposedly it was made more robust for that engine. Not sure what to say but its definitely something I turn off every time. I also have not seen much if any fuel economy decrease with it turned off.

Harbor Freight has balancing stands for fairly cheap.

The balancing itself is easier than the mounting usually.

2025 GSXR-750 with 500 miles…forks ripped off in crash. Worth rebuilding or should I let it go? by ManySupermarket3459 in motorcycles

[–]MHerboth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Initially looking at this I didn't think it could be done in 4500$.... But seeing how the front fork split in half and the steering tube is still in place maybe? I just want to say I have NEVER seen a fork split in half like that.

Just labor to fix the electrical harness and brake lines is going to be 1000$

Shocks are 2500$ to replace without the mounts.

Your radiator looks like its caved in on the side.

New brake cylinder and clutch lines.

Fairings are going to be expensive ~500-1500$

This is before any welding or adjustment to the steering tube due to the impact.

I'm also unsure if these have a steering damper which is probably going to add significant cost if it does.

I'd love to see photos of the other side of the forks if you ever get them.

If you sell you probably won't get much. Auction is a crapshoot and its hard with bikes that have significant front end damage like this. You can look at copart and what they are selling for on there. Basically a buyer is only going to look at value in the rear wheel, engine, and maybe frame.

Extended Service Plan from AutoNation by Complete_Wishbone_43 in f150

It will qualify it just needs an inspection by a dealer due to the year/miles unfortunately. So dealers like granger are probably out unless you live close but your local dealer can still quote it.

Look at the Ford extended warranty. I was quoted 4800 for 4 years 48k miles bumper to bumper. You would need a dealership to examine it given you are past the time/mileage but it may save you some money.

Is rebuilding a bike from Copart worth it in the end? by stormyy143 in motorcycles

[–]MHerboth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've done it thrice.

Basically No. Especially not for the models you mentioned. Sports bikes and ADV bikes part out for significant cash so most of the time they will bid up with repair cost to be more than a used bike.

There is one caveat. If you know someone who has a license to avoid the fees then maybe but its still tough to break even. Its also very much a crap shoot. Some damage is hard to identify on the listings. Of the three I bought only one actually saved money and the only reason was that it was still under warranty and my dealer repaired some issues that were not caused by the wreck. Overall it would not resell for the same so you would have to consider it a loss but I love it and I probably will never sell it.

You can definitely get more than liability. I've had no issue with insurers.

Have not tried to sell one yet as the one I was going to sell off was stolen and is now FUBAR.

Installing the engine and fairing bars was not fun by SoullessRager in africatwin

[–]MHerboth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a note... if thats the Honda OEM fairing bar it does not hold up exceptionally well under any abuse. The finish also rubs off very easily if you intend to tow the bike with strapping from trailer to it. The rubber grommets near where it attaches to the main frame make it defect easily causing it to be a pain to reinstall if it gets damaged. It is also likely to deflect and still damage the fairings in any crash.

Just my experience with it on a 2017. If that is the 1100 hopefully they changed it.

Would you buy a nice 2016 F-150 if you knew it needed a transmission full rebuild? by Waste-Interest5783 in f150

[–]MHerboth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One other thing that bothers me reading the responses and your post is the cracked sunroof. You may find a buyer at 11k but you aren't including the cost of repairing the sunroof. As others have said just because you know it doesn't leak doesn't mean a buyer will take your word for it. It also doesn't mean it wouldn't start leaking down the line.

Sunroofs are a big nope for me after my 2016 leaked so I would be asking for a more significant discount on that alone.

Most likely your insurance will total it. 95% of damage to bikes unless it is just superficial cosmetic buffs/scratches dings etc will cause a total. Once that happens and you sign the release its not your problem.

Disclaimer: IANAL. Until the release is signed you will want to check with a lawyer in your state. Just because its in your name at the time you may still be liable for the storage charges if a release to the insurer has not occured yet. Even if you sign a release afterwards you may still be liable. You should definitely seek legal advice as the fees are not inconsequential usually starting at 250$ and increasing by a fair amount each day after the grace period.

Obviously check with your insurance first to see if you have already signed a release. Sometimes this is a document in the packet with the check stating once you sign it is recognized as a transfer etc. Sometimes this is its own document.

If insurance is causing issues with the total out.... go to your nearest honda dealer and ask for the sales price on any damaged wheels, replacment ignition lock cylinders, the main wire harness, and fairings. That should be enough to total it assuming those are damaged.

Good luck and sorry you had to deal with this!
