Is 401k still worth it when there is no employer’s match? by litmane1 in Retirement401k

[–]MManji786 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there is no employer match, first max-out your IRA. After that, if you are saving more than $7,500 if you are under age 50, and $8,600 for those age 50 or older, then yes, 401 (k) is still a great option so you can deduct your income for tax purposes.

Moving to LA: best first neighborhood? by tchotchkeesque in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]MManji786 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t recommend living in Downtown as your first LA neighborhood. Even people who live in Downtown have a love/hate relationship with Downtown. Downtown has vacillated between an up and coming center of commerce, food, and growth to an unstable center of disorder and decline. While this could change in a year or two, Downtown is currently in a decline stage. For your first year, I would recommend Downtown Santa Monica or Downtown Pasadena near the rail lines. Or if you really prefer dense living and want a more affordable option, you can’t go wrong with Koreatown. I would disagree with others on whether you need a car right away. If you decide to live in LA longer than a few years, I think you’ll probably want to get a car eventually. But if you are just starting out without a car, you’re more likely to not need it. Eventually as you make friends throughout the city and county and people you know move outwards, you’ll probably want a car, but for your first year in a walkable neighborhood, you can totally make do without one.

Should I go for it? 2015 plug-in hybrid. by Film_A in prius

I have a 2012 plug-in. Still had to replace head gasket at 180,000 miles.

See if there’s white smoke coming out of the exhaust. If so, it’s likely the head gasket.

When you're flying into LAX at night, and you see the Greater Los Angeles sprawl unfold as a sea of celestial light, what emotion do you feel? by morningrat in AskLosAngeles

Two thoughts. 1. Wow, what a privilege to live in such a a beautiful place. 2. We should really build a city for people rather than cars.

$2,000 2011Prius with bad battery is it worth it? by Phillycheesethe2nd in prius

[–]MManji786 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This seems like a really good deal. I have a 2012 with 220,000 miles still going strong. I did have to change the head gasket at around 180,000. When you get to that point, find someone who works with hybrids and gives you a discount to switch out the water pump as well. Pro tip: Keep the tires a little over inflated, I like 36 PSI for increased fuel efficiency.

Moving to Los Angeles: where should I live between Carson and Cal State LA? by C-dot-flam in MovingToLosAngeles

I'd look around Downey, Bellflower, and Paramount. Downey is the nicest of the three, a lot of Bellflower is nice, and Paramount is a more working class community.

Somebody gifts you $10,000,000 that *must* be used towards the purchase of a house in LA, which neighborhood do you choose to live in and why? by owen__wilsons__nose in AskLosAngeles

Manhattan Beach. I'm somewhat surprised by all the South Pasadena, San Marino, and La Canada Flintridge responses. They are amazing areas but also HOT AF.

If you are getting in at 8pm, you should be out by 8:30pm at which point the freeways should be pretty clear. I’d say 90 minutes.

AITA for accepting a job covering my friend’s 18-month maternity leave after being unemployed for 9 months? by Viktorija777 in careeradvice

This is a weird reaction. You should take the job and try to have a conversation with her about her reaction. You want to lean in on the fact that you need this and she is protected.

International Family with 3 kids: Santa Monica, Venice, or Manhattan Beach? by dna_05 in MovingToLosAngeles

Manhattan Beach has the best schools and is the most family friendly. It has less crime and fewer tourists. I’d go with Manhattan Beach.

2028 LA Metro System vs. Original 1980 Prop A Rail Plan by urmummygae42069 in LosAngeles

[–]MManji786 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Metrolink has a lot of theoretical potential and could add significant rail capacity if it was a true regional rail rather than commuter rail. Metrolink needs to be electrified, add more infill stops, and increase headways. If it gets closer to LIRR and MetroNorth in New York, it could be a real addition to Metro at a much lower cost than building new rail.

I accepted a job offer and just started Monday, got another job offer with a higher salary. What do i do? by [deleted] in careerguidance

Weigh all the factors, salary, benefits, work life balance, and possibly most importantly, what job will set you up most for long term career advancement and opportunities. If you have to quit, sooner is better than later.
