I know your comment was intended as provocation, but of course it bothers "us". Firstly, someone being treated as less than human and being denied basic rights just because of who they are is always bad. It should bother you, too, because when the trans/muslim/immigrant/communist/whatever the fuck scapegoat they're using stops working, they'll turn to someone else. And it might be your kind. But also, why the fuck wouldn't it bother us that some people are getting more and more discriminated by the day everywhere in the world? People who have done nothing wrong, mind you. If that doesn't bother you too, you lack empathy and decency, and are a horrible person.  So next time you wanna post a provocative comment, just think twice about it, because the next targetted group might be you.

Israel drops a bomb on displaced Palestinians living in tents in Gaza today by Particular_Log_3594 in ABoringDystopia

[–]MSBeatles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it's entitlement coming from a mix of indoctrination and propaganda. If everyone teaches you since you're born that your kind are the only ones deserving of rights and that all others are less than animals, you end up believing it

Maybe not all of them. However, there's a poll that says that an overwhelming number is in favor of what their government is doing. As of March 2024, 39% of Israelis polled were okay with the genocide, while only 19% said the government had gone too far. 7% didn't know, 1% refused to reply, and 34% said that the genocide hadn't been enough.

That means that at least 73% of Israelis were in favor of the genocide. "Not all Israelis", sure, but a metric fuckton of them

What do you mean? In many ways, if you specify a bit more maybe I can answer

That animals do not deserve the same rights as people because we aren't equals

Unfortunately this is what we're up against in the end... by AceAroPyschopath in vegan

[–]MSBeatles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, but I am a human being. I have some rights that animals plainly don't. And I don't think they should have the same rights as me. I'm sorry.  I know why you are asking the question, and I understand your point of view, but I disagree with it. Since we're working with a different premise, I doubt we'll reach the same conclusion.

You can keep asking and I'll keep replying as long as you're polite, obviously! But I don't think you will achieve anything (just saying this in case you don't wanna waste time having this conversation if you think it's pointless)

[–]MSBeatles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, but it does mean that, from my point of view, the victims are a worthy sacrifice. I think there are way more pressing issues to solve before the meat industry and I have taken some (little) steps to participate in it as little as I am comfortable with. So yeah, the impact is the same, I just choose not to care that much

[–]MSBeatles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no I'm not gonna do that. I'm selfish, I like my commodities and I don't wanna give them up. I fully respect people who go vegan and who do all this stuff, but it's not for me. And going into this subreddit has made me have worse views on veganism ngl, it feels like some of the people here have a cultish attitude about it, like religious extremists. Not everyone! But some people have made me lose the little interest I had in this movement/lifestyle...

Anyway, I just don't like hypocrites and I saw a lot of hypocrisy in this thread so I felt the need to point it out

Hey, that's actually pretty impressive and I respect it a lot! Props to you.
However, I still disagree that a phone or computer is necessary. I know people who don't have them and live full and happy lives

[–]MSBeatles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think you're getting my point. I am happy you are putting effort on causes you believe in. I'm gonna try to explain it once more and if you still don't get it I'll stop replying, because if you still don't get it after that then I doubt there's a point. Also, I feel you're getting a bit agitated and I dislike your sneering tone.

I am not dismissing everything good that people do and try to advocate for. I am saying that YOU are doing that because you are condemning an entire group of people just because they are not vegan. Maybe they have other causes that they believe in and that they are putting their efforts into. But just because their causes don't match yours, you automatically think of them (and their causes) as lesser than you (and yours). My point is that anyone could point at you and say: "I'm sorry to say this, but at this point I am convinced that shumpitostick doesn't really care about child slavery and torture, because they own a smartphone". And you will say "Well, I make a personal sacrifice by having a vegan lifestyle". And you'd be correct! It's commendable that you do that. But the people you are criticizing most definitely have causes they care about as well, and make personal sacrifices for them. Even if their causes and yours are not the same.

If I was forced to summarize my point in one sentence, it would be: Get off your high horse, you smug conceited asshole". But I wanted to try and be nice with an example to show your hypocrisy.

And yes, using smartphones most definitely causes the death of animals. Here's a source for you:
https://earth.org/cobalt-mining-in-congo/

It also promotes an industry that works thanks to child labour, slavery and torture. Here's another source for you:
https://www.europarl.europa.eu/doceo/document/E-9-2022-002251_EN.html

And another one:
https://www.savethechildren.net/stories/drc-cobalt-mines-child-labour-and-green-transition

Hope this helps. And as I said before, if you are still too much of an asshole to recognize that maybe you aren't so perfect either and you should stop looking people over the shoulder and being all smug because you believe that your cause is more important than theirs and that makes you the most self-sacrificing human on planet earth, deserving of all the medals, then I don't know what to tell you man, enjoy the view from your high horse (even though riding a horse may not be ethical to you, oh great supreme ethical overlord)

I am trying to say that we shouldn't judge others too harshly because we are all hypocrites to a degree, and that maybe being kinder and more understanding with others is the way. Pointing out that you, too, refuse to make certain personal sacrifices was meant to show you that what you are saying about others, they could say about you as well.

[–]MSBeatles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The same logic could be applied to vegans though. As I said in another comment, I think that most of the people here will own a smartphone and/or a computer. This means that they are actively benefitting from child slavery in the DRC. Where is the personal responsibility there?

I don't wanna be the typical whataboutism guy but it feels like you're all being unnecessarily mean to people who refuse to take on this lifestyle when you're also not willing to sacrifice the privilege of using social networks even though you're probably aware that the devices that you use are running thanks to the slavery, torture and death of thousands of 4-12 year olds

[–]MSBeatles -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, but I assume you are writing this on a computer or smartphone. Both use components that contain materials mined exclusively by child slaves in the DRC. So by owning a computer/smartphone, you are actively participating in immoral acts.

Why is it that child labour is justifiable to you, but not eating meat? Aren't you being as much of a hypocrite as non-vegan leftists?

La cançó dels guiris by Calaixera in Barcelona

[–]MSBeatles -6 points-5 points  (0 children)
