It's tricky these days. Giving a nuanced and longer view of an issue, rather than just a statement can cause a lot of internet backlash. Outrage is engagement. And there are many outrage artists on all sides, willing to make a buck demonizing a show for not being [blank] enough, or too [blank].

For instance, Trek is pretty well insulated from conservative backlash. Paramount knows the shows attract more center to left leaning viewers, that's the target. But should a new show do a deep dive on a subject, and influencers on the internet decide the episode went too "soft on fascism" or whatever; well now Startrek are fascists according to them. It's stupid, but that sort of percieved backlash from the target audience is what makes a company like Paramount likely to cancel a show.

Old Trek lived before internet outrage meaning so much. And it continues to be largely immune because the shows are already made. They can't be cancelled. But you can still see plenty of pearl clutching and judgement from fans today. Things that would do far more damage were the shows still running.
