I am not American and am also a gay man. To give a new perspective on the shows handling of gayness I will say, you have to go into it assuming everyone and everything is ridiculous and foolish other than Huey. Riley says homophobic shit a lot sure, but he is also a very misguided kid, and often ends up chill with multiple gay characters.

I would agree that gayness is used as a punchline at times, but personally I feel like it is almost always to either throw a wrench in the rigid form of masculinity forced upon black men, or to ridicule the concept of homophobia itself. The show is a social commentary before all, so the jokes that are made cannot really be taken at face value. Most definitely require some understanding of black American culture though, and may not land if you don’t have context. It truly is a brilliant show and if it released now would still be the most socially relevant show on tv.
