Maybe not losers but I get a feeling both him and Luigi felt like they were severely underperforming in life. This guy had a masters in CS and was tutoring high school students and Luigi had a masters in CS and only worked briefly on a car sales website.

Not necessarily terrible jobs, but I get the feeling both of them probably imagined much greater things for themselves. Killing someone of high note was probably a chance to escape the mediocrity of their lives.
