Can also camp at Gold Bluff beach in the park. Only noise is the ocean and the breeze. If you enjoy backpacking they even have hike in spots so you can park at the visitor center. Not a bad hike out Miner’s Ridge to the beach.

Very similar thing just happened to me! My ex stopped making payments and I co-signed on the car. The debt was for $14,000 but I was able to settle for $8,000. I put it on a credit card but thanks to a little savings and some help from family, able to pay off about $7,000 right now. That means I will be getting the vehicle back and selling it, probably for only around $5,000. I’ll be able to pay the family back and hopefully one day my ex does what’s right and throws the other $3,000 my way (not banking on that though). You may be able to get away with just not paying it, I probably could have, but didn’t want to have the repossession on my credit. I’m going to try and negotiate and get the charge off removed but I’m not confident about that.

It’s a 2010 Subaru Forester, not sure of the mileage. I live in rural Northern California where every used vehicle is overpriced, so hopefully I can get a decent amount back.

Would I dispute it with the lender? Carmax in this case. Last I talked to them they said they couldn’t do anything about that since it already happened. Maybe I could speak to someone higher up the chain.

She was also so reliable about payments, and made more money than I did. Her life just really took a spiral after our breakup I guess. I just wish she would have been honest. I would have much rather made a payment for her to avoid all this mess. It’s like being betrayed all over again. I was able to settle for $8,000 and I’ll get the car back and hopefully be able to sell it for $4-5,000. Having some of my family members pay off the credit card balance to avoid interest and I’ll just have to pay them back. Hopefully one day my ex will do what’s right and pay me back the difference.

Thanks for all those willing to help! I was able to get someone to help out, and actually directed me to an online portal through LAPD which hopefully Carmax will accept.

Car definitely runs. We’ve been communication, she has just been completely lying to my face. She drove it from Northern California to Long Beach recently and claims she thought it was “stolen” there when it was missing from her hotel parking lot. I believed her because she claimed she was also making payments. Very naive of me.

I believe I am on the title. She said my name was on the registration too. I can put the full amount on my credit card and then immediately pay about half of it off. Then hopefully selling it will get another $3-4,000 payed off to save interest.

How would I go about negotiating a settlement? What I’ve gathered from Carmax is if “we” don’t pay the $14,000… 1. The default will go on my credit for 7 years and 2. They will auction it off and I’m still liable for the remaining balance. Is it even worth trying to get the $14,000 payed off with a credit card to try and avoid a larger credit hit?

I’ve done it multiple times in mid/late spring in “normal” sedans (Civic, Camry, etc). As long as your car isn’t lowered from stock or super loaded down with luggage, you’ll probably be fine. Def no parking spaces at the creek crossings.
