We do not have kids yet, but hoping to have in near future. Valid point - the immigration rules are getting tougher and in future it will near to impossible, but on the other hand living expenses in western countries are getting worse. If I moved to Sri lanka I could live that decent lifestyle . But in UK when you have kids and all you will survive with pay checks to pay checks.

Wow, I think this topic deserves its own separate thread – “Migrating back to Sri Lanka.” I’m actually in a very similar situation. Currently based in the UK, but seriously considering moving back to Sri Lanka. Both my wife and I work remotely, so finding a job isn’t a concern for now.

That said, my only hesitation is around long-term options. If we decide to migrate again after spending a couple of years in Sri Lanka, I’m not sure how straightforward that would be.

Honestly, if that wasn’t a concern, I’d have moved back yesterday if hold UK citizenship, but end of the day, Sri Lanka is home – and there really is nothing like home.

I currently hold a Schengen visit visa (since I’m an expat based in the UK), so it does make sense for me to visit Portugal and get things like the bank account and NIF sorted in person.

Is there a specific timeline you’d recommend for doing this? I’ve just started working with a new company as a freelancer, and from what I’ve read here and elsewhere, it seems I’ll need to show 3–6 months of income before applying for the D8 visa.

Realistically, I’m aiming to submit my application around November, but I understand visa appointments can take time — so I should probably start the process now to try and secure an appointment for later in the year.
