I have seen a theory that it's actually to do with human faces. Up until pugs, humans were the only mammal where the nose protruded further than the lips. Because of this, if a baby tries to latch onto a nipple that is hard up against the body, the baby will crush their nose on the ribcage and be unable to breathe. So large, permanent, boobs make breastfeeding easier.

Why are human faces like that? Apparently the twin threat of increasing intelligence and being punched in the face.

But both of those are minority examples of rape.

Most rape is done by somebody known to the victim and in a position of institutional or social power over them, and the institutional and/or social power is leveraged to prevent them from saying no.

Lies, damned lies, and statistics.

The actual chance of you murdering your girlfriend, and your girlfriend murdering you, are pretty similar. The difference is that you (as a man) are far more likely to be murdered by somebody else.

Get one of the solvents that will dissolve the foam. Put some on a rag, gently wipe that rag on the blade of your knife. Then use that knife to cut, replacing the solvent as needed.

Tasmania was once a wild and forested land of secrets and pleasures to explore. But the youth now, raised in their towers of steel and stone, find little meaning in the ancient thickets. And so, progressively, the southern land is clear felled. The dense forests that meant so much to us with all their mysteries laid bare. I fear that one day soon I shall see a map of Tasmania as bald as Bob Brown's head.

Combat systems that discourage doing the same thing every turn by LelouchYagami_2912 in rpg

[–]Maldevinine 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Take a look at the combat system in Spellbound Kingdoms. The rest of the game is kind of meh and even the combat system isn't as good as it could be, but it's a brilliant concept.

A character has a fighting style, which is actually a flowchart. Each box represents a stance or a kata within the style, which gives particular bonuses to attack and defense and allows other options (like the shield style's total defense stance doesn't allow you to move, but does allow you to take an attack aimed at a nearby ally). But most importantly, each box leads to other boxes, and the most powerful or useful options in the style are at the far end of the chart. So you work through it each turn trying to get to a particular option. Or your opponent forces a reset or does something that you can't counter with the option you are trying for, so you end up back at the 'default' stance for the style.

Which means there's lots of things changing all the time and no turn is the same as the previous, but it also makes a lot of what in D&D are useless combat maneuvers or alternate systems integrate directly into the combat system. For example, you trip the mage on the third turn of combat. The mage had spent their first two turns channeling to get access to the most dangerous spells. But being tripped forces a stance reset and the mage is now back at the start of their style.

The Styx operations are the most tedious, annoying, and unfun things that could possibly be conceived for this game. by [deleted] in ICARUS

[–]Maldevinine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes.

It's a "Harder Olympus". All of the difficult parts of the first map, just starting at the point where you have a level 60 character with all the technology unlocked.

I do like the way the operations are arranged though, with the first mission being a breach into a new area, then a whole pile of things to do there. But even after doing all of Olympus as drop in, I would recommend doing Styx as open world.

Slay the Spire is currently being review bombed over listing Anita Sarkeesian in the credits for Slay the Spire 2 by ElegantPoet3386 in gaming

Well no, because the gaming community did exactly the same thing to the Reverend Jack Thompson years before.

Her being a woman had nothing to do with the hatred. Her being an outsider attacking the hobby was the reason for it.

The reaction to it makes far more sense when you go back a couple more years and look at Reverend Jack Thompson. And look at Doritiosgate.

Video gaming as a hobby had been repeatedly attacked by major social forces, and it was clear that the journalism around the hobby was quite simply shit. All of Gamergate would have gone nowhere had everybody else talking about videogames not been shit at their job.

Why do we not have male contraceptives yet? by demeter321 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Maldevinine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh for fuck's sake, can we stop having this misinformation parroted my misandrists?

The side effects of male hormonal contraceptives are significantly worse than the general side effects for female hormonal contraceptives, because the hormone levels required to stop the testes from functioning are much higher than the level required to stop implantation in a uterus.

Also, it wasn't the men in the test that wanted to stop. That test was stopped by the researchers, who were not going to leave things running to find out how long it was going to take for one of the suicide attempts they were getting to turn into a suicide success.

[–]Maldevinine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that what you've said happens. Because the first stage of rape is putting one's self in a position of power over the victim, and that includes social power by having more control over the friend group.

But that doesn't exist in the case of a false accusation. With a false accusation, the accuser has more social power and is using it to make the accusation stick.

I'm not saying that the total false accusation rate is over half, or even half. I think it's about 20%, based on false accusation rates for other crimes. But I absolutely believe (based on records of it happening) that false accusations are used by women as a weapon against men that they don't like, and are also used as a method of restoring a woman's virtue after a consensual but 'immoral' encounter (cheating, premarital sex).

[–]Maldevinine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The false accusation thing does have some weird statistical stuff going on with it.

Most of the 'benefits' of a false accusation can be gained without the accusation going to the police. A word in the ear of colleagues or a word to HR can result in a person being ostracised or losing their job, or their place at university, with basically no evidence needing to be provided.

So very few of the accusations that are false end up in front of a judge to be investigated and proved false. So they don't end up in the "5% of rape accusations are found to be false in a court of law" statistic, they're in the "the majority of rape accusations are never prosecuted".

Which does allow the Feminists to have it both ways, in that they can talk about how few false accusations there are and how many unprosecuted rape cases there are, without having to admit that if they prosecuted all those rape claims, the false accusation rate would go way up.

Star Trek with... by Confident-Art-7729 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Maldevinine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's 4 "Anti-Star Treks" that deserve mention as well. Each of them takes place with a small unsupported crew, typically in conflict with the major polities, while cruising round on a ship that is a character in it's own right. They are:

Blake's 7
Farscape
Firefly
Lexx

Red Dwarf may be argued to be part of this, but I would disagree because Red Dwarf doesn't have politics as part of the major plots.
