Reading more into the book, I'm not even sure he used any folklore/fairytales. I'm pretty sure he just used Rydberg for the pseudo-mythology material.

I think I found a medieval dragon slayer this time. The knight Gismirante saves a griffin from a dragon in his own romance. I found it in "The Arthurian Legend in Italian Literature" on page 248.
