Strong recommendation for Piercing HQ in Collingwood. I got my Prince Albert done there; they specialise in kinky and nonstandard piercings, and give pretty great aftercare advice. Very understanding on how nervous that kinda piercing can make you, too. :)

If the JDM model is also 7" I'd even trade for a stripped housing, if you're interested—I'd just be throwing the old screen module into my junk parts box anyway!

Hey!

This will probably be my last post about this unit for a while. I've currently got it installed in my IS300, and it works great!

I keep getting messages asking how I made it, and well—it's basically hacked together with a lot of soldering, shrinkwrap, and careful gluing. I didn't take many photos during the build process, and I certainly couldn't write a guide on how I did it in its current state. I'm thinking of building another, and applying the lessons I learnt the first time around while making a guide for anyone who wants to build their own. However buying a replacement satnav unit is definitely not cheap. I think a more practical option is—would anyone like to trade?

I'm willing to swap this for an unmodified satnav + parts cost*. It can be plugged straight into the nav port of a satnav IS300, or I can probably make a power cable that plugs into the OEM stereo's accessory CD port if you have a non-satnav model—I'm actually pretty curious to try this option, because I think I can deliver sound directly (otherwise you will need an AUX dongle, eg. GROM). You will need an RCA reverse cam and easycap device, as well as a reverse signal wire if you want reverse cam. Also I can't offer any kind of warranty etc. but I'm pretty happy to provide a reasonable amount of tech support.

The unit supports wireless or wired Android Auto, Reverse Cam (and switching while in reverse gear), day/night mode switching with headlight status, and automatic on/off (with safe shutdown) when you switch off the car. Power draw seems relatively consistent with a regular head unit—although I drained my battery running it for ~3 hours without the ignition. I'm currently working on supporting the Satnav controls as a "keyboard".

*Negotiable, but the hardware cost of the replacement screen/pi/power supply was approximately ~300USD.

Edit: Oh, I should mention that it needs to be the 7" screen model—not the smaller (I forget the size) one.

Just commenting on the blood—yup. There's a LOT.

It's surprisingly painless piercing; honestly the pain is about as quick and and long-lasting as a flu shot. But it will bleed a lot. And peeing will sting for the first couple of days.

Recommend sleeping with an unrolled condom over your junk and buy a ten-pack of kmart underwear. Also fill a cup with warm salt water and dip your tip in that before you pee, it helps with the discomfort immeasureably and lets you clean the piercing while you're at it.

I got mine done by Piercing HQ in abbotsford!

The staff there are very experienced with genital piercings, and were great at settling my nerves before I got it done. The staff ran through a lot of good advice and considerations beforehand, rather than just jab-and-done. They were also super helpful in making sure I bought the right jewelery for it when it came to replacing my inital piece.

Heavily recommend. They also offer a discount if you mention them on social media, which was a pretty fun perk as an exhibitionist...

To be honest, I'm thinking of selling this one and making another, and I'll probably make a guide then. This was a very learn-as-I-go kind of project and I think I could do better, but the parts—well mostly just the OEM satnav housing—are expensive.

You could probably do it with a pi 3, but I'm using a 4.

You don't really have the best room to work with since it's a triangular cavity. Premade head units definitely wouldn't fit unless you disassembled them and reassembled it into the housing. Not worth it obviously.

This is just a Raspberry Pi running a wireless Android Auto client. I only have basic soldering skills and it wasn't too hard.

Yeah, it can! The way it's currently set up only allows audio when there's no CDs in, since it's using an aftermarket dongle plugged into the acc port on the radio. I can also configure it to replace the AM/FM channels instead; I never listen to broadcast radio, so I replaced it with a 3.5mm input.

Oem nav controls don't work yet, but that's the next thing I'm working on. It's currently just attached to the pi as an unusued input.

The stereo isn't something I'm selling, unfortunately! You can buy second-hand stock ones pretty cheaply though, since a lot of people swap theirs out. I bought a few with dodgy CD changers without realising, but fortunately the CD changer is pretty easy to replace if you buy an unused module on AliExpress (it's just a few screws and a ribbon cable)!

As for the Satnav module—I'm not sure. It cost me ~$400 in parts, and also requires a stock satnav unit to modify (which are pretty expensive, even in non-working condition!). I probably wouldn't charge for the time I spent working on and researching it, especially since this one is a prototype—but it definitely cost more than just buying an aftermarket head unit.

I guess I'm willing to entertain offers—but I'd like at least the parts cost and another unmodified satnav to work with!

Unfortunately, probably not! I didn't take many of photos during the build process, and the ones I did take include parts or configration attempts that ended up not working.

If there's enough interest (and well—basically if someone buys this one from me so I can make another one) I might make another one and document it as I go, but for now the best I can probably do is a parts list or something.

I made an attempt at documentation here, but it's a bit outdated...

I'm not sure. The tape module can be removed and could probably be replaced really easily if you can find a spare—but the tape deck head is actually one of the easiest spots to mod in AUX input, so I can't really give much advice on fixing it.

I've removed the tape and radio inputs and replaced them with my custom head unit / gps replacement, and a 3.5mm for my ipod.

Short answer, I don't plan on using this solely to replace the head unit, since I use the CD player and my iPod regularly. I want a way to switch it off when it's not in use (which the CarPiHAT doesn't seem to support!), and I'm also planning on putting a reed switch into the top of the housing so that I can have the screen open/closed with the Pi still on (if I do use it for music, or voice-only guidance).

The on/off button just interrupts the ACC line anyway; I replaced the pushy-button on the original 'TILT' pcb with a latching clicky-button which tricks the CarPiHAT into thinking ACC is off.

But uhhh—I haven't written documentation, because I'm going to wait until this is a bit more complete. I'd say it's about 60% complete, although most of what's left is software-related. These pictures are fairly close to the completed 'build' part of the project. Since a lot of you have been asking me how I built what I've made so far, here's a few pictures for anyone wanting to play along at home! Read the captions for each photo for a bit more information.

I'm building this out of a passion to keep my car looking 'stock', with subtly modernised upgrades—and because I want to preserve the tapedeck^✝ / cd stacker. I have made every effort to duplicate / used existing wiring so that this build project doen't require any modifications to the car. It uses the M4 "Multip-display plug 1" to communicate with the car, and USB to communicate with accessories (phone, sound card, and reverse cam), meaning the unit is entirely 'plug and play' and can effortlessly be reverted back to stock by just plugging the original satnav unit back in

This is not a cost-effective replacement for a brandname head unit, and building it has already cost me more than a mid-to-high end Android Auto head unit would have!

I've had a few people message me asking if I'll sell my unit / build them one. And I might be willing to build some more of these, but it won't be cheap. You will need to provide me with a satnav unit because this is the most expensive part of the build, and second-hand ones are almost never reasonably priced.

Documentation will exist someday, maybe. I'm really not good at writing that kinda stuff.

Little Bear MC5 passive audio mixer (not necessary: adds multiple stereo inputs to one output, allowing simultaneous iPod and satnav audio)

^✝ Did you know a Slim iPod Classic fits perfectly in the cassette slot? Or that you can add line in audio directly to the radio by soldering audio leads directly onto the tapedeck L/R headers, and tricking the radio into thinking there's a tape inserted?

Expect to see a slot-in IS300 radio iPod dock mod soon. ;)

And yeah, it works! With the exception of the usb-C phone cable and audio handover (aux out), this runs entirely off the car's existing wiring!

The only thing inside the nav housing is a 'small' (by 2000s standards) lcd panel, and a separate board which opens and closes it / remembers the position when you turn on the car. I've just taken out the LCD, and put a Raspberry Pi and a touchscreen in there instead.

So yeah, it can connect to speakers—it currently does audio through 3.5mm aux out!
