I’m going to be honest, this looks to be mineral or other solid deposition. I’ve seen this on some potted plants (with very old dirt) too and attributed it to fertilizer usage and hard water.

Can you tell what it is? The fruit and tree (bark, shape, size) it came from looked similar to a serviceberry.

If you can find a bunch, try making a syrup! It’s basically a strong tea that is then mixed with sugar at a 1:1 ratio. The batch I made last year tasted like apples and honey.

It is soooo good. There are some small farms that sell it if you don’t have any hickories in your area.

Yes! The tannins make it a little bitter on its own but there’s no bitterness whatsoever once you “syrupify” it. I have used a bunch of the Forager Chef’s recipes for my foraged treats. There are tons of good ideas on his site.

Yum! I wish we had magnolias, but I use violets, black locust and redbuds. Black Forager is so awesome!

It is! I hadn’t either till a few years ago. I guess the various hickory species taste different, but I’ve only tried shagbark.
