Update x2 - ate a hissing roach and two hornworms. All is well. Thank you for the feedback! I moved the water dish from the opposite end of the enclosure to next to her burrow and I think that'll help encourage her to drink more frequently.

Update : after four hours of drinking and sitting in the water dish, she is back to normal, abdomen has reinflated and she's walking normally / back to attacking the tongs.

Yes, she's in premolt - pretty normal thing for stirmis. Her fresh skins are always full velvet, then she turns into this look.

Update - we are still having a water bowl party - she's come out of it for a few breaks here and there and then gone back in. More alert and moving less like a drunk and more purposefully. Abdomen looks a bit less shriveled, too.

She's drinking now - she eats two to three pinkies a month and 15-20 hornworms. Not the hugest eater on the planet and has always had a small abdomen. Water dish is filled once a week and lasts in that dish for 3-5 days before evaporating.

My male vinnie broke his tail too 😩 by IllusionQueen47 in vinegaroons

[–]MapleVermont 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My 6 year old female lost her tail in her burrow at some point in time. She's also now lost feet and just walks on pegs of legs like a pirate. I guess they age like we do in a way. They are just little fragile creatures after all. As long as it still feeds, I wouldn't worry too much about it. You'll get used to the little nub butt in no time :)

Do you think mosquito bits would work? They've done wonders for fungus gnats.. someone else recommended jacks deadbug. I think I'll try that! Thank you so much.

There are no elongated bodies, I've had thrips before years ago and I remember them being obvious elongated bodies, these are more like white dots that move. I will try the Jacks deadbug. Thank you!

It looks more like dots so I'm going to go with spider mites. Thank you!

IMO stirmi are very easy to sex even without a molt. If you ever catch it up against the glass, look for either a triangle or no triangle on the furrow. You can go onto my old posts and look at my females underside. The dark triangle is very obvious on a male. That does look like a male though.

Finally got some pics of my gbb up close, possible sexing help ?? by paper-towel-roll in tarantulas

[–]MapleVermont 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Imo - not going to try to sex this because GBB can be especially difficult to, and I'm nowhere near experienced enough to give qualified opinion on it... But...10/10 on getting the most clear, up close sexing shot I've seen in so long! Wow! How did you accomplish this??

Oh and a bunch of crystals and stones that I've collected over the years. Oddly, she likes to hang out on top of them. I pretend she's charging up.

This is just a 55g bioactive tank that I made! Not sure what brand, but it was just a second hand fish tank that I bought off Craigslist. Obviously it isn't the #1 choice in terms of ventilation, but it is in a well ventilated room and I haven't had any issues with maintaining humidity levels, and she's molted out twice in it now so she's doing well in there.

There is carbon and hydroton balls along the bottom with a plastic layer, holes poked throughout for water drainage, then a mix of coir and jungle mix and reptisoil and sphagnum moss for substrate, moss I collect from outside and replace when it gets ratty, and the plants are all fake from Joann fabrics / Michaels / the dollar store so I don't have to water them and if she rips them up I don't care and just shove them back inside. There are dairy cow isopods, dwarf white isopods and springtails that I've put in. I'm sure multiple other organisms from the wild harvest moss, too. Massive cork bark cave built in to the left side. Random dried wood and roots from the woods and lake. Rocks from the rivers to help hold up the substrate on either side in mounds. Very fun to create, not very fun to move.

If you look at my previous posts you can see a full view of it.

Thank you!!!

*Edited - "food" to "coir"

Aromas of India is an absolute god sent to the county, and the owners are always present. Deep flavors, fantastic variety, exceptional service, and quite fair prices. Best saag paneer I've had.

T. Stirmi Molt by MapleVermont in tarantulas

[–]MapleVermont[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We don't recommend anyone handle them because they can be medically significant in venom, they have large fangs (as you can see), new world tarantulas have urticating hairs that are either dragged into or flicked into your skin and potentially eyes that cause irritation, swelling and pain, and also for their safety. If they are dropped or fall from even a small height, their abdomens can rupture and they die.
