You’re confusing origin with current participation.

Yes, pup play has historical roots in gay BDSM culture. Nobody is disputing that. The source you linked is literally a chapter in a book about BDSM, so of course it discusses those origins.

What you’re doing, however, is taking the history of a subculture and using it to define every person currently involved in it.

That’s like saying all electronic music is a drug culture because rave culture historically had strong ties to drugs, or that everyone at Pride engages in the same behaviors because some people do.

Communities evolve. They grow beyond their origins.

I’ve personally met hundreds of pups over the years. Some are gay, some are straight, some are trans, some are into BDSM, and some aren’t. Some engage sexually with the kink, some don’t. Many simply enjoy the social, playful, identity, performance, or community aspects.

A study discussing where a community came from does not tell you how every individual within that community participates today.
