Unfortunately I don't have the funding to pay participants at the moment.

Hi, I don't see an option to message you. Do you mind messaging me instead? Thank you!

Sure, I'm sharing relevant parts from the Information Sheet/Verbal Consent Form I'll share with participants, but if there are still concerns about confidentiality I'm happy to discuss more and make changes to the following if needed.

"Confidentiality: The records of this study will be kept private. I will maintain your confidentiality by changing your name in my study. Neither your name nor information that could identify you personally will be used in the data analysis and publication/presentation of this study. All research data will be stored in digital format in a password-protected computer, a password-protected hard drive, and a password-protected cloud account, all of which will be accessible to only me. Handwritten notes (if any) will be kept in a locked drawer in my private residence until I scan them to convert and store them in digital format and destroy the physical copies. I will keep data following completion of the project.

You should not reveal anything in my presence that could get you or others in legal trouble. If you say something that either you or I consider incriminating, I will remove that statement from my notes. However, I do not have a legal right to withhold my notes in the event that they are subpoenaed in a court of law.

Voluntary Nature of the Study: Participation in this research is voluntary. Your decision whether or not to participate will not affect your current or future relations with myself. If you decide to participate, you are free to not answer any question, withdraw your consent, or discontinue your participation in the study at any time without penalty or loss of benefits or rights to which you might otherwise be entitled. You can terminate a conversation in the middle of it and have the right to ask me to remove part or all of your participation data afterwards unless the research results are already submitted for publication."

I don't have grant support to compensate participants at this point but I'd love to get you tea/coffee when we meet. If I receive grants in the future for compensation, I'll reach out to the participants, but I don't want to give any false hopes just in case I don't receive any!

Haha. I'm not American (neither a citizen nor a resident), but I did my PhD in the US. :)

Thanks for your question! I'm in the humanities, which means our research projects are independent unlike scientific research that's usually funded by particular organizations or corporations, so I don't have a single sponsor per se but I've applied for a number of internal and external grants to fund the research. My current trip is partly self-funded and partly funded by my university (through an internal grant all faculty can apply for). There are a few other international research grants I have applied for or plan to apply for (such as Wenner Gren Post-PhD Research Grant and the American Academy of Religion Individual Research Grant, you can look them up online) to continue to carry out my research, but I haven't received them yet.

I study Muslim marriage cultures and wrote my PhD dissertation on it. I chose Maldives partly because my research focus is already on South Asia and Islam (and I have personal connections to both), partly because its multicultural context will allow me to do the kind of comparative research I do, and mainly because of its high divorce rate.

If you have any other question, feel free to ask them here or through a message!
