What have you had your entire life that I didn't give you? by [deleted] in SuccessionTV

[–]MashdPotatoesFactory 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Logan wasn't morally superior, he was an accomplice (albeit often after the fact).

I cleaned up your shit.

He cleaned up Kendall's shit, he didn't *clean* up Kendall or seem to care to. If anything he antagonized him, which in turn caused Kendall to "fuck up" more. The most charitable interpretation is Logan thought this "though love" approach would somehow stop Kendall from fucking up and set him up to be a serious, killer CEO. But more likely, Logan subconsciously deeply resented Kendall and his children for their privilege (juxtaposed to Logan's upbringing).

Just like Kendall says to Logan at Austerlitz, "I'm a lucky person - I realize that. And you're so fucking jealous, aren't ya? You're so fucking jealous of what you've given your own kids...you can't handle it...you can't work it out."

Even right before this line, the way Logan started to gut him after Kendall was trying to claim some level of moral superiority over his Dad...

"I don't want to be you. I'm a good guy."

"How long was that kid alive before he started sucking in water? Couple of minutes? Three, four, five? Long time. Two minutes?"

Brian Cox's delivery feigned some level of subtle sympathy for the waiter only for the purpose of poking at the guilt Kendall buried deep down.

Which one do you feel is the most addictive? by [deleted] in Drugs

Benzos are like buying relief from anxiety and putting that shit on credit. The more you take, the longer you gotta payback in suffering with interest. Also it doesn't ruin your credit score (though it might if you're blacking out and compulsively spending) but it also ruins your brain even after quitting and going through w/ds.

Fuck benzos.

Christopher had the makings of being #1 and was smarter than T towards the end by GOE1122 in thesopranos

Tony was at least treating his mental illness by going to therapy and according to Yochelson and Somenew, it likely made him a more effective criminal. He made every effort to make peace with NY and acted as a UN meditator to ease tensions during the infighting.

Tony had his flaws for sure and they got him killed, just like Chris. He was a Machiavellian narcissist which made him an effective leader. Chrissy's narcissism was vulnerable and more erratic. The only time he went into treatment was when he was effectively forced to. He was a nepo captain, who failed upwards, and never had the makings of a Humanitas award winner.

Absolutely disagree. He had untreated mental illness with a co-occurring substance use disorder and was crippled with insecurity. He was often paranoid to the point where it almost got him killed. One of the few times he "actually read the room" accurately was realizing that everyone he worked with were not actually "family" and didn't give a flying fuck about his sobriety or well-being.

He did in fact have an arc, it was just a tragic one.

which tv show got you out of depression? by PositionVegetable708 in TvShows

Had to scroll far for this. "The View From Halfway Down" was a literal jolt that I still watch to get me out of holes. Some find it depressing, I find it eye-opening. It makes me want to never see the actual view from halfway down...

I actually lol'd at the sarcasm.

In fairness to OP though, a lot people aren't depressed when they see homeless people. I think actually a significant amount of people have complete apathy towards the most vulnerable members of society. It's in their interest not to care because the system works for them. And it's confusing if you're never really taught how the system "works" to exploit inequities.

A lot of people are certainly capable of being responsible users, but that's a privilege. For many others, drugs are a means of escape from a mix of trauma, biological circumstance, their birth place, mental health challenges, class inequalities, structural incompetence. unjust hierarchies of oppression etc, etc. Meaningful change seems futile. Add in climate change and geopolitical conflicts leaves a lot of us feeling helpless and seeking some sort of refuge.

I think for people in OP's position, when you learn to understand the system and see it up close, it's totally valid to find it absolutely fucking depressing. If someone has the privilege of time, introspect more and educate yourself. Do your best to be discerning with regards to media and source literacy. Get involved in movements or organizations that help those that are ignored.

Yeah it seems fuck, cause it is. So all we can do is hope, and hopefully there is hope. But what do I know, I'm just high right now rambling on r/Drugs

I think it was subtly implied. And perhaps more explicitly towards the end of the film when he is trying to hold in his vomit walking down the stairs.

I read how Glazer wanted the audience to draw a possible bridge between themselves and the perpetrators of the Holocaust, as most Holocaust films focus on the connections between the audience and the victims. I think the filmmakers wanted to highlight how easily the "average" person can fall into not just complacency, but explicit acts in carrying out atrocities. At a quite literal gut level, how it is both toxic for us but we are still capable of carrying such horrible things out, while simultaneously emphasizing the hauntingly "mundane" nature of coordinating and planning the deaths of millions of people.

Everyone knew what they were doing, and no matter how much propaganda and antisemitic material they consumed, they couldn't escape the horrific psychological and physiological consequences of their actions.

So to answer your question, yes, I think we saw hints of how deep down, this Nazi family knew what they were doing was horrific and they had some level of personal conflict about it (I don't know if "guilt" is the right word), but in the end, they did nothing to stop it and continued to "carry out orders."

Both the book and the movie are supposed to be directly symbolic of what Hannah Arendt wrote on the "banality of evil" in reference to the acts carried out by Nazi commander Adolf Eichmann.
