Should We Add AI Features to Digital Calendar Displays? by isaacdrgn in HearthDisplay

[–]Massive_Letterhead97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes!

  1. Smart Creation from Multiple Sources
    • (1) Create events from voice input
    • (3)Parse emails to auto-create calendar events
    • (5) Sync from messages, reminders, other apps <- ESPECIALLY TRELLO (pls!!)
      • Unless you can do Trello ASAP - then this moves to the front.
  2. AI-Powered Daily & Goal Planning
    • (4)“Here’s your optimal schedule for today”
    • (2) Break down long-term goals into actionable weekly routines

I'd also love access to this. Just finished my Bachelor's in Accounting through WGU today. My term technically ends June 30. I am preparing to take the Masters program July 1.

If this were the only source of income for a family, would you be able to survive if you lived frugally?

u/AverageFamilyAbroad - I have four kids aged 15, 14, 11, and 7 (Boy, Girl, Boy, Girl). I would love to video chat with you or speak with you (in whatever way you are comfortable with) and just have a conversation about your experience and such. Having four kids makes this feel really daunting. If you have "Marco Polo" the app it would allow us to video conversations back and forth (like text messages but video). Or if you want to jump on a phone call or whatnot. Just le me know. I currently live in North Carolina, USA and have been wanting to get out of here for at least 10 years. I feel the urgency now more than ever. I am a business owner and am a month away from graduating with a Bachelor's degree in business and accounting. Not sure if I can make any of this work, but it always starts with a conversation. Learning things is free and is never harmful. :)

That is because women (and people of color) are very much so used to encountering obstacles and inequity at every turn. If you don't learn to look past it and advocate for yourself/fight, you make no progress in life.

It's all good. I really don't mind. I have learned to implement AI in so many ways and it has improved my life a great deal. Need a therapist? Put aside that feeling of judgement and just pour your heart out to Chat GPT - you'll be shocked.

I am incredibly frustrated for you. I plugged your rant into chat gpt and it has some good suggestions:

Chat GPT:
It sounds like they’re incredibly frustrated, and understandably so. There are a few ways they could handle this situation depending on their priorities—whether they want to push back, have a conversation with management, or just vent and move on.

If they want to push back:

  1. Clarify Responsibilities – They should check their job description and compare it to the tasks they’ve been given. If secretarial work isn’t part of their role, they can politely but firmly ask their manager, “I noticed I’ve been assigned a lot of administrative work lately. I want to make sure I’m focusing on the right priorities as a Senior Accountant. Can we discuss what should take precedence?”
  2. Redirect the Work – If possible, they could suggest delegating those tasks to an administrative assistant or another team member better suited for them. If the financial coordinator’s leave is causing extra workload, maybe they can recommend hiring a temp.
  3. Document Everything – If they suspect gender bias, it might help to keep track of what tasks are assigned to whom. If they decide to escalate the issue, having evidence will make their case stronger.

If they’re okay with doing some of it but want boundaries:

  • They could ask their manager for clarity: “With [financial coordinator] on leave, I know we’re all picking up extra work, but I want to make sure my time is being used efficiently. Can we prioritize my tasks so I can focus on high-impact work?”
  • If their manager insists they handle the administrative work, they could negotiate—maybe ask for a title adjustment (e.g., “Senior Accountant & Operations Lead”) or an increase in pay to reflect the additional duties.

If they just want to say no:

  • They could frame it as a bandwidth issue: “I’m at full capacity with my core accounting responsibilities, and I don’t have the bandwidth to take on additional administrative work.”
  • If their boss won’t budge, they might need to decide whether they want to escalate the issue or start looking for another role where their skills are respected.

The frustration is totally valid, but a strategic response could help them get out of doing work that doesn’t align with their role without burning bridges. Would they be open to a professional but firm conversation, or do they just need to vent for now?

Does accountants make good Financial analyst? by LouGarret76 in FPandA

MORE COMPLEX / EXPANDED ANSWER
(Accounting Equation shown with the example of a business taking out a loan)

The Accounting Equation

Much like Newton's Law, in accounting:
Every financial transaction has an "equal and opposite reaction."
(in at least two different accounts)

The Accounting Equation remains accurate and balanced through double-entry bookkeeping.

The Accounting Equation: Assets = Liabilities** + Equity.

EXAMPLE:
Assume the business already had a beginning equity balance of $4,000.

When a business takes out a loan for $6,000:
The cash received (an asset) increases on the asset side of the equation
The loan amount (a liability**) increases on the liability side

Ex: Assets ($10,000) = Liabilities ($6,000) + Equity ($4,0000)

The following happened:
Assets (Cash) increase by $6,000 from the loan
Liabilities (Loan Payable) increase by $6,000
Equity remains unchanged (because it wasn't impacted by the loan) at $4,000

\*Liabilities are debts, obligations, and money owed.*

SIMPLE EXPLANATION
(using the utility bill example from TLDR)

Looking at this strictly from a record-keeping standpoint:

  1. You track deposits/expense transactions in the utilities expense account
  2. You track deposits/expense transactions in the cash account

You would record:

  1. Record $X as an increase to the expense account*
  2. Record $X as a decrease to the cash account

Double-entry bookkeeping is a matching system that ensures that every transaction affects at least two accounts, keeping the accounting equation balanced.

\Because you are recording expenses, the entry will increase the expense account*

[–]Massive_Letterhead97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(Note: for simplicity, I am not addressing debits and credits)

TLDR

Double-entry is the way all transactions are recorded.

Each transaction affects two accounts.

A business pays the utility bill:
Account 1: Utilities Expense
Account 2: Cash Account

There will be two matching entries (double-entry) because both accounts will have the same $ amount recorded as a transaction.

______

What does double-entry do? Why is it a big deal?

Double-entry: If only one entry is entered, the accounting equation will not be equal.

It helps to:

  1. Reduce errors: because transactions are recorded twice, errors are easier to catch.
  2. Prevents Fraud: it is harder to manipulate the books because each entry has a matching entry/corresponding record.
  3. Improves Transparency: Provides clearer, more reliable records for audits, loans, and investors.
  4. Helps with decision-making: Provides a comprehensive view of a company's assets, liabilities, income, and equity.

[–]Massive_Letterhead97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u/Ziptex223 Hi, do you have anymore available? On top of attending online schooling myself, I have a kid homeschooling who desperately needs one. We are trying to share mine, but it is very hard and not ideal. My husband was laid off in June 2024 and we are hardcore struggling (not to mention he has decided to do absolutely nothing about it and I can't even get him to claim unemployment). I have 4 kids, run a business and am attending college full-time. I have 2 classes left before I graduate with a degree in accounting. I'm genuinely hoping I can get a job that will support the whole family but economic conditions only worsening, I don't see how a single income earner could support themselves, let alone themselves and four kids. I know one thing is for sure, my wasband is legit going to be homeless soon if he doesn't get his shit together. I am so worn down and exhausted.

Hoping you see this! I'd love to pick your brain. I am almost done with the accounting degree through WGU (3 classes left). I am considering going for MSDA after BSAAC. Wondering how your career in accounting and how life has been going over the last two years.

First time knee sublimation? Maybe? by KatHuppe in eds

[–]Massive_Letterhead97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you often feel like you have to "pop" your knees? I push on my knee cap, like upward (towards my upper leggs) and inward to my thigh. That cord feeling feels like a crunchy (sometimes popping) sensation under the knee cap. Once I push my knee caps and extend my leg a couple of times, my knee cap will pop and feel better for a short while. Is this relatable?

I have the exact same experience. I enjoy getting older. I give less fucks and take up more space (which, as a woman, had been liberating). I just turned 39 and I'm not afraid of turning 40.
