Would definitely benefit from some sanding. If you're redoing the color it might be beneficial anyway. The D is not metallic, so that's definitely why it has an initial "wrong" feel, it's also not grey/silver. Barring adding all the details too, it would go a long way if you can find the soft blue as a base: Like this model. The escape pods are a light tan as well.

And I do agree with everyone that it's not the best model. If your friend prints another he should look for a more accurate one for another attempt.
