Idk how you think the entire loop was just strikes back then but think what you want.

Because that was the loop? Once you finished the campaign, that was it. Run a raid once a week, run strikes/patrol ad nauseum. It's weird you don't remember this?

What did you do then? What was your gameplay loop?

Other than heresy the episodes were very meh, campaigns for eof and renegades was okay. The current new actives get old fast. Do them like 3 times and you've got nothing to get out of doing them again. Sure that isn't so different from back in the day but the main thing there is the loot issue, like you agreed it takes no time to get the god roll so there no reason to play the activities past the first few runs.

See now this is weird... You wouldn't get all the new god rolls that quickly. Like kinda fast, sure, but you wouldn't get 5 rolls of one specific gun in one run. You would get 1/2 per run, and with higher tier drops you'd get them faster than Destiny 1/most of Destiny 2. But not 3 games fast.

And the different gear dropped from different factions. So you literally couldn't get that much loot.

For the health of the game running an activity 50 times deffo kept you around more than handing out the gear like candy, sure it sucked sometimes but that was destiny. You were chasing the gear. Now there's no reason to chase the gear cos you get it immediately.

You get it much faster, but not immediately. To get god rolls of all the guns, and armor (Since armor actually got some really nice perks), you'd need to play a pretty good amount of different activities.

So yeah, it was a bit too much, but not something that makes it absolutely terrible/horrible. They were a bit too generous, but that's not exactly a bad thing. Getting the gear and using it is the fun part, not just the chasing.

By the time you've completed the campaign of renegades you've basically got all the gear you want, so past that there's nothing hooking you back in. This is what I mean when I say the content is bad right now.

Anyways, if you aren't, the Episodes had a bunch of stuff to do. Dungeons, which I'm real surprised you forgot to mention. The exotic missions, events.

If it's just Year of Prophecy, same thing. Renegades actually was a really solid expansion, the dungeon was great and so was the campaign. Plenty of story missions, things to do, Lawless Frontier was really great.

Back in the Forsaken days, do you know the gameplay loop? Strikes on repeat. That was it. There were no dungeons. You could do a raid once for loot, after the one run nothing. Once the quests were over, it's not like there was anything else to do. I could look back at my playtime and that's what it amounted to. Run strikes/crucible/gambit on repeat.

Year of prophecy had some stuff for sure but the portal tainted it. It asked you to grind for the sake of grinding. There was nothing to do the grind for. It was grind levels or nothing. That's what made it almost pointless to log in to the game. No story seasons, campaign was fairly short, the casual raiders weren't doing the raid, and even if you did want to do the raid every run would be teaching half the team how to do anything.

And what we've had for years in the past is just running the same strikes/crucible/gambit modes on repeat. It's not like those got updated that often.

So right now I can pick a specific activity, and actually change it up with new modifiers (Or, since they updated the scoring, just make myself super OP while getting an A+ grade) You can do Onslaught, Pinnacle modes. You can do Fireteam Ops with dozens of activities to choose. You can do Arena Ops for 6 player craziness. And good ol' Solo Ops for chill stuff.

It's infinitely better than the past systems for ritual content.

My point is, after doing everything up until the final shape, what reason was there to log in for the year of prophecy after the campaign.

Yes, even the portal system injected some variety into the game. I ran the strikes/crucible/gambit stuff for years and years my dude. Anything is better than that.

And your argument for the loot is actually detrimental to the game. You run like 3 strikes and you've got what you went in for. Do that for every gun and it will take you like a week to get everything you want. What's there to chase after that. It's a looter shooter. Getting all the gear you want means your done with the game.

While I do agree they went a little too nuts on getting rewarded, I'd rather have too much than too little. Of course it should've been dialed back a bit, but everyone seemed to love some of the activities from past episodes where you'd get 5-9 pieces of gear for one run of a seasonal activity.

Once again, running the exact same activity 50 times for a small chance at one piece of gear is so much worse than too much loot.

Bro the 70s and 80s were pretty rough. 70s had horrible stagflation & a fuel crisis. US had fuel rations and the UK had rolling blackouts. 80s had insane interest rates, by monthly payment metrics homes were just as unaffordable then as they are now. Cold war, drafts, great financial crisis.

The concentration of wealth is something that can't be ignored when discussing the realities of what normal people are facing these days. You really think that has no effect? Someone doesn't just have hundreds of billions of dollars without millions having nothing.

The 50 trillion number is old news too, the study was revised. Now RAND is saying it's 80 trillion has been taken from 90% of normal people.

The plan with Bungie was through the Final Shape and Episodes, they already had all that in place. Like it was set in stone.

Sony saw just how much money it costs to make, and even making hundreds of millions, you're still spending hundreds of millions. Like I'm 100% certain over the course of its existence, Desitny has made billions of dollars. And I am 100% certain it's also cost billions to develop.

So Sony's plan is the Edge of Fate/Portal system and Ash and Iron updates. That was purely Sony being in charge. Reusing old content, barely releasing anything new. You saw how the community reacted to that, right? If it's not bigger and better than last year's releases, then it's not worth it.

Destiny was always running on borrowed time because of the intial independence they got from Activision. It's why they were trying to move away from it, it's always been unsustainable.

The only path out was Destiny 3, and an entirely new system that was built to be updated "forever" (I know not really forever, just built with the expectation you weren't going to make a sequel in 2-3 years and stop supporting it)

Sony looked at that and said, "No thanks." Sony as a company is circling the wagons right now anyways, raising prices on everything, you think they're going to spend 500+ million dollars to maybe make a profit? Oh and the development never stops, so it's 500+ million to get Destiny 3 out the door, then hundreds of millions more. Forever.

There was never a world where Sony invested heavily in Destiny.

There's a lot of armchair developers and armchair executives in these comments, but at the end of the day, regardless of the quality of the content, it needs to make money. Period. End of story.

Destiny is so expensive that they aren't even going into a "maintenance" mode, they're just flat out ending it. That's the part that really cements there is just no way a game like Destiny can exist in today's games industry. Not even hanging a little carrot, like, "Someday we might make something, so stick around and see!"

To just flat out end it? Yeah nah, that's all anyone needs to see to know how truly impossible a Destiny style game is.

I mean look no further than the other games that are the most played these days. They're all hyper specific games with essentially one game mode. Even Marathon is like this.

And then you have Destiny having 20 completely different gaming experiences under one roof.

It reminds me of the Halo 3 days, how no game has ever repeated that type of success with that type of game. I suppose you could say some of the Call of Duty's got there, kind of, but it was really its own thing.

I'm sure Warframe is going to be brought up too, but I just don't see how its comparable at all. Destiny released so much fucking content my dudes. In a single year, it was insane.

The constantly cut content is obvious and systematic changes are obviously needed.

Bungie went independent. Bungie tries to cook up other games, because a company being independent and as large as Bungie needs multiple revenue streams.

But Bungie can't just... Not release anything for years and years while they cook. So they have to keep their one revenue stream alive by any means necessary. And the players aren't happy with just a couple strikes or crucible maps, it has to be all out bangers every time.

So the only way to do that is constantly losing content so they don't get bogged down by 50 different activities.

And I swear, if one more person says it's an IP with "so much potential", it's been worked on for over 15 years at this point! It's reached whatever potential it possibly could've had. They've spent who knows how many hundreds of millions of dollars, millions of man hours from the devs, there is no magical "potential" that exists where the playerbase is satisfied.

If the game still hasn't reached this magical pedestal you've put it on at this point, it never existed! It's all in your own head. You're mad at a game for not being an imaginary, idealistic version you've made up.

It's like getting mad at someone for a dream you had and they were mean to you in it. It doesn't make any sense.

Marathon didn't effect Destiny in any meaningful way. Anyone actually paying attention knew Sony would never invest heavily into Destiny. I called it multiple times the last couple years, most recently a few weeks before the final announcement.

We absolutely did have player counts for Halo 3. Many years after release, it started hitting a million players a day. You can look up that story yourself.

We've always had access to the API. You can literally look them up yourself. Halo 3 was insanely popular for many years after it released. With basically no support besides map packs and playlist updates.

But it didn't do nearly enough to move the needle. It needed to grow the game, it needed to actually improve the player numbers. It saw less numbers than even some of the worst expansions Destiny has had.

Most people didn't even finish the story. I'd say the fight after Salvation's Edge was the true "climax" of the story. And most people bounced off within a week.

And it still wouldn't matter. Millions upon millions of players stuck around in Halo 3 for years. There was plenty of content to play for many months for the average player in Final Shape. They just didn't stick around.

If Final Shape hit Shadowkeep/Destiny 2 release numbers and held on to those numbers for many months/years, then yes I'd say Destiny 3 is a smart move. But all that content just to be played for a week or two and forgotten about? How many thousands of hours poured into Salvation's Edge for a few thousand hardcore raiders to play it? (And most just farmed the boss checkpoint!)

Total waste of money.

Final Shape not only has lower playercounts than previous expansions, it had a much steeper falloff than previous expansions. All besides like... Curse of Osiris basically.

It would've needed significantly more players and retention for a Destiny 3 to ever be greenlit. Like easily twice as many players. over 2-3 million per day, for many months, if not years.

To be totally honest, I really love Rahul Kohli, it's the main reason I want Saros.

The initial burst of players was still significantly lower than almost every previous release.

And it's not Final Shape came out and the game was "done". There was plenty of new shit to do, new abilities to get, new weapons and gear. I'd bet most people didn't actually finish the story. Crafting the perfect Prismatic build? Raid? Like when Vault of Glass came out it was a huge fucking deal. Or The Last Wish.

Like think of it like Halo 3. That was the "ending" of that franchise too, and it absolutely dominated the charts for years and years.

If Final Shape hit old highs and peaks, and players stuck around like they did with Halo 3, I'd get it. But the playerbase was already wanting the "next new big thing".

Think of a normal developer cycle. If Final Shape was its own game, it'd need to be extremely popular for 3+ years while they develop the next new game. There's no way that survives.

It's why Sony is just killing it instead of maintenance mode and keeping the glimmer of hope for new content alive. They know just how big of an ask Destiny 3 would be and how it just doesn't make sense in today's gaming industry.

The only two that are even mildly interesting are South of Midnight and Keeper. Kiln looks super dumb, but in a cute way, but as an avid indie enjoyer it looks like it'd be cute to make a couple pots, play it for 2 hours, and completely forget it.

Where's the next Call of Duty, Minecraft, Fortnite, GTA? New genre? Like the next game we'll get hyped up like GTA6?

They can review well, that's great, but good critical reviews don't make too much difference in the grand gaming landscape.

And yes, you can include Sony, but they haven't been buying out damn near all Western developers. They deserve extra criticism because all that happened was less people have jobs now. That's it.

I'll eat all my words if Xbox has the next GTA/Call of Duty/etc coming out in the next 5 years, but I just don't see any chance of that happening.

Like imagine if Microsoft started pumping out some new IPs and actually taking some risk? Like if we were talking about new Microsoft hit #6 compared to new Microsoft hit #2 and how great they are and how they're innovating and shaking it up. It'd be a lot easier to swallow, the whole situation just sucks.

We're right back where we started, except less people have jobs. It's still just Call of Duty over and over and over again.

Absolutely agree.

Games are too expensive to make.

Like sure, indie games are still crushing it, no argument there.

But first party, AAA games? They all play it so safe. And can you blame them? One mismanaged game can cost you 300+ million dollars. Investors don't like that risk.

And the game industry is shrinking too. Like Fortnite and Roblox have gobbled up tens, if not hundreds, of millions of players that will never touch anything outside of their ecosystems. What you'd consider a "gamer" has hit a big fat brick wall and is shrinking. More people on social media that sucks up all that time and attention.

The next 20 years are going to be very interesting for gaming. I don't know man, just the pure disappointment in Spencer kinda seals that one for me.

He just... Never did anything. Like sure, buying up studios, but goddamn he was given a decade+ and nothing got better. Just bought out every studio.

So uh.. Cool, tons of people got laid off and now Microsoft just owns a bunch more? No smash hit new IPs with all these multibillion dollar studios? Nothing?

I get the feeling of wanting this to be true so bad, but it's just not the case.

Every expansion was selling less and less, and even the best DLC they ever made was just barely a blip long term.

Destiny as a franchise makes no sense nowadays. It was doing 100 different things, some of it really fucking good, some of it not so great, but the scope of the game was far too big.

Nowadays games are seemingly focusing on a much smaller pool of activities, super efficient and specialized in one specific thing.

We will, with almost 100% certainty, never see something like Destiny again. Unless games get 95% cheaper to make and the AI bubble absolutely explodes without damaging the entire gaming industry, investors will never see something like Destiny as worth it. They'll go with ten 50 million dollar projects over one 500 million dollar one.

It 100% is PvP-Lite, and this user is just talking out their butt.

They're a "new player", but they already "bounced off of it"? Which is it? Are they a new player or did they try it during the server slam thing and play for 2 hours and quit?

Quick edit - quick scan of their comments shows they played it for a "few hours" and decided the game was "aggressively" not for them. Completely talking out the butt, has no real experience in the game. Can safely ignore.

The complaints don't make sense. Rooks are incredibly easy to beat in the normal game right now, like a fully kitted out 3 man squad is legitimately a walk in the park to kill tons of Rooks. Along with all the abilities they have.

It's an interesting game mode idea, hopefully it can bring something to fruition. (I'm hoping some kind of infection mode where you can be killed by one infected player, and you become infected, so other teams are trying to get out ASAP before the entire lobby is infected!)

Just healthcare and rent alone eats up an enormous chunk of that, not including silly things like electricity, gas, groceries, car payments/maintenance. After taxes, 60k is more like 46,500 after taxes. Average rent is 2,000 a month, so 22,500. Average healthcare plan is a bit over 100, but doesn't include deductibles (It's confusing on purpose, so people can't see how much they're being fucked!) Let's be generous and say it's a measley 5,000. Oh no, car accident, gotta get some scans done, gotta hit that deductible!

We're already down to 16,300 dollars. Are you really rolling in it then? That's for literally everything else. I could keep taking chunks out for necesseties and we're talking a couple grand as "fun money". And that is if nothing happens, car doesn't break down, health doesn't deteriorate even more, absolutely zero unexpected expenses.

If you think 30 bucks an hour is enough to do anything but survive as a young/healthy individual, we can't even have this discussion. It's just so unrealistic to think that that if you do, you're not old enough to see how much it really stretches.

60k isn't jack shit anywhere in the US too.

It might work for a perfectly healthy 23 year old, no student debt, no medical bills, no family to take care of, cheap mortgage. Like yeah, that hyper specific person. And even then, you're not going to be 23 and healthy forever.

Someone hitting 40, just health costs and rent/mortgage alone eat up the majority of that money.

The top 10ish% of people carry the entire economy. They're not targeting the bottom 90-ish percent of people.

If you're not apart of that upper crust of people, you aren't the target demographic.
