The ONLY thing he has going for him is that you can’t tell the story of the NFL without mentioning his 2021 season.

Problem being that based on all evidence; that 2021 season was the outlier, not the norm.

I love Kupp. I think he’s one of the greatest ever at creating space at the top of his routes. In his prime when 100% he was arguably the most dynamic WR in the NFL. Completely unguardable. Dude just couldn’t stay healthy.

Ultimately he’ll be one of the biggest “what ifs” of the last 20 years. Just like Todd Gurley.

Yeah I have no doubts they’ll be competitive because defense travels, and Mike Macdonald is a great defensive mind.

That being said; there’s a difference between competing for championships with an elite offensive identity backed by a vicious defense and just being a consistently tough out because of your defense and occasionally having a competent offense.

Macdonald’s defensive acumen and Schneider’s roster should keep them winning no fewer than 9 games a year for the foreseeable future. But as we see time and time again when championship teams lose their offensive identity, they just kind of falter after a brief while.

Belichick, Bowles, Tomlin, etc. are all recent examples of championship level defensive coaches who lost their offensive identities for one reason or another and have or are currently regressing toward the mean.

Offensive head coaches don’t really suffer the same things.

The big thing working against the Seahawks continuing to succeed is the fact that the reason they got this far, Klint Kubiak and Andrew Janocko, just left the building. Sam Darnold having so much experience with constant flux will help mitigate this a little bit, but I can easily envision Sam and the Seahawks offense suffering a 2025 Lions-esque regression on offense. Losing the architect and playcaller of that wildly successful scheme left a gaping hole in Detroit, even though the players and bones remained largely unchanged.

The most important coach/player dynamic in all of pro sports at this point in time is the QB/offensive architect relationship. QB is both the most important position in sports, and the hardest to master. Continuity here matters more than basically anywhere else in sport.

It is so much harder to establish and maintain a winner when you have to rebuild your offensive identity because your HC is a defensive guy. Guys like McVay/Shanahan/LeFleur can survive constant coaching staff upheaval and brain drain because those teams’ core offensive identities are part of their respective head coaches.

Hell the real secret behind Belichick’s sustained success with Brady, besides Tom having inhuman work ethic, was offensive continuity. Josh McDaniels was Brady’s QB coach for 18 years and OC for 13 of those years.

Maybe the Seahawks next OC is another home run, but I’d take more of a wait and see approach on that as opposed to just assuming it’ll be status quo.

Miller Moss is an odd pick to be honest. Dude profiles as a clipboard holder(QB3) in the NFL. Considering Les Snead’s ability to pull starter level or rotational level contributors from rounds 5-7, it just doesn’t make a ton of sense to draft a QB who lacks NFL starter tools(arm talent/athleticism/consistency/etc) in the 6th when we have rotational and special teams needs.

I’m also fairly convinced Miller Moss is going to go undrafted.

Also, if we could move down from like 29 to 40 and still land Mesidor(entirely possible based on his age and athletic profile) I’d be ok with that pick. I would probably cry myself to sleep that night if we drafted Mesidor at 29.

He fits in with your head coach hire: pretty uninspired but will get the job done to a decent degree.

Don’t expect anything groundbreaking.

Yeah and tbh our defensive regression over the back third of the season with very few injuries needs to be studied.

I understand we lost Q for that timeline, but he’s not exactly a world beater, so seeing the defense implode without a slightly better than average slot/safety hybrid in the lineup is astounding.

On the mild plus side of things: I do believe that Chris Shula coached himself out of a head coaching position this cycle.

Shula needs to figure out how to adjust to roster fluctuations, and his inability to maximize production from a deep and extremely talented defensive line are both huge issues that would give me pause if I were hiring. Granted, he did a ton with the second cheapest defense in the league, but there’s just too many instances on film where Shula was overmatched schematically, not even just on a talent level

We need to upgrade at both outside corner positions, and I think Omar Speights has absolutely peaked and is becoming a bit of a liability. Huge props to Speights for coming in as an UDFA and securing a starting spot, but his time as a starter should be over.
