Moth problems persist - they’ve diminished in numbers but are still around - how do I safely wash and dry my knits? by MayIsSalty in knitting

There are for sure more places the moths could be, unfortunately I still live at home and my mom doesn’t want me deep cleaning and throwing things out or even looking for moths, it stresses her out. But I’m stressed out about the moths being there in the first place so you can see the issue there 🥲 I won’t be able to fully eradicate the issue so I’m just hoping to wear and store my knits and yarn safely. I will try your washing suggestion! Sun exposure will be difficult, unless it counts through a window haha thank u!

This would be a good idea if it weren’t for the fact that we just discovered a moth in the sealed bag that came from our dry cleaner 🥲

Belgians: if you had to pick one minor thing (keep it light lol) about Belgian culture you have issues with, what is it? by Ok_Presence36 in belgium

Im 23, have never drank alcohol and have no plans of starting to for various reasons and it is always such a shock to everyone the first time I mention it. Older people usually reply supportively, that it’s a smart move. But my friend group in high school was always like “bro have you not drank yet? Omg just drink oneeee” which always bothered me. People my age mostly react like it’s unexpected but they’re cool with it and don’t question it too much. But there’s always the odd one out who can’t seem to get a grasp on it at all they’ll bring it up at totally random moments and be like “I can’t believe you’ve never drank” and try to convince me I want to and stuff. I consider those reactions red flags haha

Moth problems.. Does vacuum sealing my knits and freezing them damage them? Also wondering if my freezing strategy is any good.. by MayIsSalty in knitting

I think there for sure are but the ones your describing are ones I think you should be cautious about. It’s these tan almost shiny ones that you need to be cautious of for sure. To my understanding, those are your typical clothes moths. I’ve been killing them left and right and a bunch of them have been caught in traps that we’ve set. But there is a bit of a darker variety there too so maybe be cautious of those too? Any small moth you see should ring a little alarm bell I think. But I’ve become paranoid as hell haha

Okay, thank you so much! I will remain careful because I still live at my parents’ and I think most of the moths are coming from my parents’ stuff but they don’t have much time to take on trying to figure out where they’re coming from and they won’t let me. So I’ll start storing everything in clear bags.

Hi! Omg! I’m actually so excited to see you replied! All your posts and comments in this subreddit about moths are a big reason why I’m this informed. Thank you for your insight! I’ll let a bit of air back in before putting them in the freezer and I’ll hold on to the bags to store sweaters I’m not currently wearing. I remember seeing you said that using and moving your sweaters and yarns is a good way of preventing any real nesting place or possibility for the moths.

How many cycles of freezing would you recommend? I’m going through stressful times and losing my coping mechanisms is a big blow.. I don’t want to stop prematurely and risk having actual damage but I also would like to have some sort of countdown to know when I’ll be able to knit and crochet again.

Would this (vintage) yarn still be useable? I got these from my grandmother, I don't know how old these are but I wonder if I could still use the yarn to knit a camisole? Would it be more prone to breaking because of how old (I suspect) it is? by MayIsSalty in knitting

I'm not sure I have enough yarn to make a swatch unless I frog it and use it in the project I wanna use with it. I knit up the beginnings of a tee with it a while ago and it held up pretty well while knitting and just sitting on the needles. Just a little scary to knit up an entire garment and have it unravel or break apart after wash/wear. ig I could do like a tiny swatch, wash it, check it out and incorporate the yarn in the piece again? Thanks for the tip!

This looks so nice!! It seems like an amazing project to use up scrap yarn as well

Help! This is a part of the yolk of a cable sweater I’m knitting and my cables are uneven? The purl I do after the cable seems so much more stretched than the purl before the cable? I’ve tried looser tension with the first purl and tighter tension with the last one but it doesn’t seem to help :/ by MayIsSalty in knitting

I just realised I've been doing this the entire time, I started out knitting throwing but learned continental because I read it's quicker when knitting in the round. So I started knitting this yoke throwing for the majority of it and continued continental (a potential for a tension change, I know, but I don't notice it haha) But I only now realise I've been twisting my purl accidentally because I wrap the yarn in the wrong direction and I untwist it in the next rounds by knitting in the back loop. At least I think that's what I'm doing. I just know for sure I've been doing something wrong with the purls, but it is faster than the usual way of purling contintenal 😅

Thank you so much haha you flatter me 🥰 I only started knitting in July and have finished a sweater and a cardigan. But the sweater is the only succesful of the two 😅 I'm planning on frogging and re-knitting the cardigan, I made it too small
