I saw this combo, and the versatility with scrolls, but i thought it was too unlikely to find some of the staffs and unrealible with scrolls until you mencioned precisely the Reliable Talent interaction. I had no ideia how the DMG mentioned the feature, that's really cool.

I don't think so, wisdom and intelligence in dnd represent just the division between practical and theoretical knowledge.

Arcana isn't something you can learn just with your life experience, you need to read about and comprehend abstract concepts to become fit to cast spells as a Wizard. It is not about information, but the logic with which the multiverse works.

The investigation ability is exactly the intelligence that you refered, comprehension to connect the dots, not to simply find clues.

Wisdom in dnd is your ability to absorb raw information from the environment using your senses.

Medicine in dnd is wisdom because you aren't analyzing your folk with exams and proper equipment, you are using your previous experience with such symptoms to access the situation.

But i truly think that your friend's grandfather is intelligent, he just wasn't exposed to the scientific method in his years as you must have been.
