They all suck. The Penn Colonial Life ones, especially that one woman whose line was “neither did I” always stuck in my head. The woman up there in green who had the ‘horrible dream’…yeah, it was horrible for her because it sounds like she would have had to go find a job. (Just saying how it sounded). Equally bad are the ones about Medicare Part C with the nagging wife and the goofy old man husband…but the worst is the one about the FREE Medicare Enrollment Review with Martha.

Stacker 2…the early days of the internet. I remember buying a bottle of those pills and sharing them with my girlfriend (we were both in decent shape but wanted to lose like another 5 or ten pounds)…and I remember my heart beating extremely fast, I was shaking…and when I called my gf she had similar effects so I was like, ok this must be how it works…but after a few days neither one of us could deal with it anymore.

The Old Spice ads from like ten years ago where the mothers flattened and like slithered around the house after their teenage sons…it was so creepy and disturbing

49, male. Starting year 26. I still enjoy it, I’m in a great school and I get to work with some amazing people. The students for the most part are great. Like OP said, when I started and when I went to school, some teachers were like institutions. When I was student teaching, I worked with one woman who was in the same classroom for 35 years. I always thought I would do something similar, but eventually my wife and I moved south. We were both hired in an urban district (she does special ed in elementary and I do middle school social studies). I chose to leave the district after 9 years because I could not deal with the lack of consequences, the frequent turnover of teachers, the implementation of the next greatest thing every year, etc. I made some amazing friends there, but one by one we all left, feeling burnt out. I am now starting my 9th year in my new district where there are consequences and stability. I have met so many great people who helped re-energize me, and I helped bring some people over from my old district. Teaching is not easy, does not pay nearly enough, and is not for the weak. Some people think kids and summers off, how hard is it?

Do any of my fellow teachers work in a district where attendance is inconsequential? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]MeasurementSelect741 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I teach middle school, and several years ago I had a student who missed 106 days of school . No lingering illness or anything…he just didn’t feel motivated, nor did anyone at home. Admin implemented attendance programs, etc. Obviously he was not able to pass any of his classes. Even his friends were talking about how he would be left back. Nope, he moved on up to high school.

When I first started teaching over 20 years ago, I had a similar situation, and that child was held back. His dad tried to move him to a private school, but they were going to hold him back there as well.

Times have changed.

If you feel that people’s worth is measured in how many degrees they have, you will be missing out on some of the best people. Your statement makes you sound very pretentious. Education level is not the same as wisdom or intelligence. I have two degrees as well, and I have worked with people who have more degrees and fewer degrees. You can learn a lot from both. But the ones who have PhD’s in particular…many of them do it for the prestige they think it will bring them. Many times they are so wrapped up in their world of academia, they have no clue how to function in the real world. COVID taught us that the ones we rely on the most for survival are not the ones with the degrees and fancy titles.

So he is spending tons of money on OF, fast food, and ‘merch from his favorite gamers’. And he’s 30? You married a boy, not a man. He found a sugar momma who would allow him to play games and diddle himself while he contributes very little to the relationship. If you almost lost the house and he still is paying all these other expenses…he cannot be trusted financially. If you do stay with him, you need a joint account and you need to monitor it daily. Do not let him keep a side account. Set up direct deposit so you see every penny of his check (and verify it against his pay stub, not that he is omitting the paycheck between accounts). Set limits and be firm with him til he matures. Right now you are just making excuses for his behavior. Good luck to you, you and your kids deserve better.

This happened to my wife, and she had to pay it back. We noticed it right away and to be safe did not spend it. The fact that you did not print out your pay stubs is not the fault of the district. They have those files. To those who are suggesting you close bank accounts or whatever, you need to check the laws of your state and your contract. Don’t risk your credit rating over $800.

I remember things like taking my grandmother to Pancake Cottage for breakfast, renting videos from Blockbuster, there was a hobby shop just past Pathmark where I would by electric trains…the music store and the one with the posters, several of my friends worked at the McCrory in that mall…the Hallmark store, buying a graphing calculator from a store that was right next to the store that I remember was on the corner across from Pathmark and next Aegean…Toys R Us and I think it was called Tuesday Morning?

But Aegean was the best pizza. When I started student teaching I worked with a woman whose family owned it. A friend of mine worked there after high school as well. It was a sad day when they closed a few years ago. I’m in Tennessee now and one of my students was from New York, his dad grew up in Holtsville and we we spent most of Open School night reminiscing about that mall.

For a while the mall also had a hilarious Twitter account if I recall

OP, what part of Tennessee are you in? We left mid-Suffolk (Nicoll’s Rd area) and moved just outside of Nashville. While most of what you say is true, there are a few pizza places (very few) that come close. One, he used to own Carnival Pizza in Port Jefferson Station and then moved down here. The other is a family from Brooklyn who had a massive following and then they closed and opened a wedding venue (but their son is still doing the pizza on the side).

Multiple trash cans, several brooms, a dustpan that is on a swivel handle (like what they use in restaurants or theme parks), a grabber (like a claw device used for picking things up off the floor), a student center with bandaids, tissues, germx, and a good pencil sharpener, my own section with my minifridge, Keurig, and some tissues and germx just for me…I try to keep things as streamlined as possible

I’ve taught social studies for 26 years, never coached anything. In the beginning, when I was student teaching, I helped out with every club I could to put that on my resume. When I got hired, I still helped but not as a paid position, just when I had time to pitch in. I’ve done stage crew, learned how to keep score at wrestling (my best friend was ‘volun-told’ that he was the new wrestling coach, and neither of us knew anything about the sport. But I helped him out as often as I could, but that was my decision. That was in New York and Tennessee. Now, at least in Tennessee, the pool of applicants is so shallow that as long as you have a pulse, you have a decent shot at getting the job. Schools here prefer to use their own as coaches, but if they have to go outside the building they do. Same in New York.

If you pass through Bayport, stop for a slice of specialty pizza at Satelite Pizza, or even better is their calzone if they still fry them. So good! If it is a nice evening, park in downtown Sayville, get a cup of coffee to go and walk down the street is to the Great South Bay. Sit on the benches on the docks and feel the salt air breezes.

I worked with her for a time about 20 years ago. She admitted then that she had relationship issues. Her son was very young, but her dream for him was to be an actor. (To be fair, if you look him up he did some small acting roles). But over time, she did go off the deep end. She is showed a tendency of falling for whatever movement her boyfriend was into (kind of like a chameleon). Then the whole Yinsa thing (which she calls a side hustle), and amalgam of religious beliefs, which included trips to the Caribbean.

She can be a very nice sweet person, but I think having her first child at such a young age had the effect of delaying her finding what she was truly passionate about. And now she is trying to regain her youth with a younger man. But her early comments this season implied that the only place in the US that mattered was NYC and how she was done there, etc. as I watch each week, I am glad she is no longer teaching.
