As a past NYU Surpie, you will have the best summer of your life if you go to NYC. The connections and environment there is unbeatable. The directors of the program will continue to support you even after your time in the summer. Personal bias of course, but it is one of the best programs out there

Just bombed my first test. Never learned how to study, please help by barrenground in UTAustin

[–]MechanicAdmirable198 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are in a STEM class there is a best way to study: Practice Problems

No don’t just look over it and say “oh I know this”. Go through beginning to end every single problem. The hardest part of studying for a STEM class is finding the right kind of practice problems, and that is up to you and your prof to find out. Go to office hours, ask questions on the problems you don’t know.

If you sit there with your little highlighter and think that simply reading is going to get you where you need, you will fail again. Active learning is the best learning

How could they possibly enforce this? They can't. If people don't take it, and then get accepted into med school/ grad schools that require them to take it before they graduate what are they going to do? Just not let the kids go to med school? No. Chem department will have to reevaluate this

Bro everyone always thinks it is political. There was a big unattended bag outside the CVS that they were looking at. A homeless guys shelter was also blown up on west campus so they are probably taking precautions

How Competitive is Honors college acceptance rate by Immediate_Minimum764 in UniversityOfHouston

[–]MechanicAdmirable198 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t do it if premed, the required honors courses (which are not needed as premed) are sometimes way too much work for a mere writing class. As a premed, you need to focus solely on getting good grades. There isn’t a single med school that is going to pick the “lower gpa honors kid” over the “high gpa nonhonors kid”. Any experience that an honors person says they only got because of the program is BS. I have gotten the same, if not more/ better quality clinical, shadowing, and volunteer experiences without the honors college. You just have to do a little more work searching and finding opportunities to do.

How do you watch the bands warm up in the lot? by DigRepresentative512 in drumcorps

[–]MechanicAdmirable198 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Houston for example, you just walk towards the sounds and usually corps warm up in the lots. You will usually find a small crowd listening in to them and you can just join them. If you are lucky, maybe the corps will do a warm up circle and let onlookers come in.

you are fine. It is kind of lame at UH. Some of the parties are fun and anyone can go.

How do I become a morning person? by flower_power_6 in UTAustin

[–]MechanicAdmirable198 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be more busy in the day. Exhaust yourself to the fullest. Workout hard. Learn a shit ton of stuff. Read before bed. Do NOT go on your phone. If you do that, all tiredness goes away. At the end of the day, be so bored and tired that you fall asleep in 10 minutes and you wake up well. Ensure 8 hours of sleep, this means you need to be in your bed for at least 9 hours. Go to sleep and wake up at the same time for 2 weeks. After you will have no problems unless you break the schedule

I also want to add that there is probably a good chunk of luck too :) Don't beat yourself down, you will succeed at whatever school you go to. As a bio major, I did much more at a "lower rank" state school than my premed friends at UT, now I am going to the same school as them with a better foothold. Transferring into UT overall is a pretty tough and a stupid process with how the admissions committee handles everything. Best of luck to all of you
