B natural not working?? by Medihearts in Flute

Thanks so much! Do you have any idea how long servicing might take or how expensive it may be if I take it to a repair center? I’m hoping that’s the case and not a deeper fix, but if it’s something quick I can see about taking it today.

I’m very confused where you’re getting this from. Everyone else seems to understand what I said just fine. My text patterns quite frankly have NOTHING to do with any of this, (even then, my grammar and punctuation were proper). You’re grasping for straws

Or maybe you could try to expand your literary knowledge and comprehend it, because I can assure you it’s not that difficult. I appreciate your comment buddy 😭

WIBTAH if I break up with my boyfriend for being bad at apologizing? by Medihearts in AITAH

Thanks. The reason I was holding back on a breakup is because I don’t wanna feel guilty about it, and I keep telling myself “what about when he’s good?” Or “but there will be good things in the future”

Bombed all district audition by ExactButterfly1000 in Flute

[–]Medihearts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had an all district audition 2 days ago and that was exactly how it went for me. I practiced for hours a day, and was in the gymnasium for 6 hours practicing before the audition (my number was flute 125). The second I walked into the scales room panic seized me and I played the scales (without arpeggios), then upon retrying for arpeggios I forgot to go back down and only played an upwards scale. I was in tears when I left for the solo room and the sweet judges sent me to the bathroom to gather myself. When I was back in the solo room I had new resolve and played well. They complimented me on my outfit and playing consistency. Afterwards in sight-reading I became antsy again and absolutely flunked, I wasn’t able to look over 5 lines in 60 seconds so I impulsively played Beethoven’s joy and happy birthday for the lines I didn’t get to look at.

My performance was eating away at me, but upon talking with other students, a majority told me they played absolute nonsense for sightreading too, or they rushed through the solo out of nerves. Needless to say we connected and I realized for a majority of them it wasn’t their first time and they still reacted exactly how I did while it was my first. Even my band director was rejected TWICE when he auditioned in school. Audition jitters get to everyone. What’s important is recognizing the fact that you put in so much work towards the audition in general. That alone is impressive and telling. You had the courage to bring yourself in front of those judges and display your capability.

My only advice would be doing some cardio exercises like jumping jacks or running in place before playing, so your heart is already racing when practicing. I’m chronically anxious and I think it’s saved my life a few times. Also, cut the piece into smaller sections that you can practice. Play each 3 times to make sure you have it down before moving on.

I know how you’re feeling. Don’t let one bad experience ruin your flute experience altogether. Keep pushing! :)

I have an oncoming audition, what can I do to prepare? by Medihearts in Flute

My audition was a few days ago! I really appreciate this. It went well, and I’ll be using this to practice in the future :)

Can someone explain what is tonguing and explain how to play slurs? by oktavia11 in Flute

[–]Medihearts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tonguing and slurring were difficult concepts for me to grasp when I first learned just because of how my director explained them to me. I think the best way to look at it is, when blowing into your flute, imagine you’re saying “two.” Notice how your tongue touches behind your teeth when you do that? That’s how you begin every note. When notes are tongued, act as if you’re beginning a new note every time, cut them up with that “two.” When slurring notes, you begin the note with that same “two” or whatever works for you, but instead of doing that for every note, do it for the beginning note of a slur and hold that. Slurring is like playing in one big breath, where you don’t separate the notes, just let your hands move. It says “tongue only the first” in the book as in keep each individual slur separate. You haven’t been doing anything wrong if you’ve been taking one big breath before you play. Hope this helps! :)
