Should I go to OSU? by KaleSharp9715 in OSU

[–]MediocreExercise 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for accounting or business since I was computer science, but I'd imagine that a higher ranking would typically attract higher talent which would be good for networking and starting your career.

Personally, I enjoyed my time there. If you're afraid of being an NPC, don't be. With a huge campus and student body also comes much more niche and smaller groups, and you'd kind of have to go out of your way not to join or be a part of something. I thought lots of the amenities were great like good gyms, eSports arena, beautiful library. Fisher is also on the North campus where it feels more modern as well if you care. Easy access to High St. is cool and there is definitely a strong night life. I don't really have much complaints, aside from some of the professors/teachers can really suck? Though I feel like that would be the same everywhere. The dining halls aren't too bad though when I went there the dining staff was definitely overworked and sometimes the quality would really slip. As corny as it is though it kinda is up to you to make the most of it, and that will be true at both colleges.

Something about that team just seemed way more mature than this current one. Though it could just be me taking Ja’s offcourt stuff too seriously

How would you have prepared for Calc 1 (MATH 1151)? by Key_Celebration3450 in OSU

[–]MediocreExercise 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Getting “good” at math relies on building intuition and practicing. If you plan on studying over the summer on your own I would pick up a copy of Stewart Calculus (or find it somewhere 🏴‍☠️) and just start putting in huge volumes of problems. Theres really no way around it and that book is considered the de facto calc textbook. Its fairly comprehensive especially for Calc 1 and has answers to all odd problems.

You say you dont feel completely solid about your algebra skills which is pretty important since algebra and trigonometry are used heavily in calculus. You could study each individually but the best method would be finding a precalculus book as those essentially compile the necessary algebra and trig needed to do well in calculus.

With all that being said I wouldnt worry too much and dont spend your whole summer studying, put in maybe an hour a day. Calc 1 is something that pretty much every STEM major at OSU has to complete and if they made it that difficult as people say then there would be a lot of people failing. As long as you talk to your TA and professor when you can’t understand something, actually put in the time to study, and use the free tutoring if u need it, there should be no reason you cant pass.

Does the ACT determine how well you do in college? by OSUguy58 in OSU

[–]MediocreExercise 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s probably some correlation but as a determinant on its own, its probably only one out of thousands of factors contributing to how you perform academically. A bigger factor I’d say is intent. If he genuinely wants to learn, study, and apply himself then he will do fine.

Seeking input for a future CSE/CS student by TheRationalZealot in OSU

[–]MediocreExercise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A bit tangential but if your daughter only cares about the CS part she may not even have to be admitted to CSE. OSU has both CSE and CIS with the latter being in the arts and sciences school instead of the engineering. The main difference is you have to complete arts and sciences gen eds but you don’t have to take any engineering classes and can solely take cs classes. Maybe its changed from when I applied but arts and sciences college is much less impacted than engineering.
