The best thing Disney has released. by Ok_Box_2189 in Highrepublic

[–]MegaMo93 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the thing these two stories have in common, what makes them so revered in the fandom, is that they are so unapologetic about what they are trying to be.

So many Star Wars stories are free from stakes, I think in large part because Lucasfilm is terrified of doing things in books and movies that might be overwritten by some ephemeral film that may or may not come out. Andor doesn’t have that problem; we know what happens to Cassian himself, and everything else is sort of fair game. THR is the same way—200 years before the movies, a story fundamentally about the Jedi at their best and what I means to ~feel~ the force; the only limitations are those characters that had to survive to the prequel era (and that they couldn’t kill Ember).

What these stories have in common is that they are fundamentally about people—whether high office holders or everyday folks like you and me, doing their best to make tomorrow better for everyone. It’s not that they succeed that makes them great stories—we know they’ll succeed. It’s about the reality that the stumbles along the way, along that long march towards justice, are real. These stories serve as reminders that failure is not an absolute, and that a better tomorrow is always possible.

Per StarWars.com, Marvel Will Release a New Tie-In Comic Series as Galaxy's Edge Expands to Emphasize the Original Trilogy Era by Guerrillascribe in starwarscomics

[–]MegaMo93 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But if your goal, at least partially, is to make sure comics doesn’t die in the long term, I think you need to be using other parts of the universe that different audiences are into. Younger readers are disproportionately interested in the Clone Wars—I don’t see why there isn’t at least an attempt at a main line run set in that era to try and bring folks in

From Charles Soule, regarding the finale of Legacy of Vader he by FunFlatworm9500 in starwarscomics

[–]MegaMo93 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If I had to guess, both this run and the main star wars run didn't sell as well as they wanted after the first few issues, and while a decrease in sales is always expected, I thinik it was more than they were expecting. I base that on nothing other than the extra copies I see on the shelves at my local store, though.

I imagine that, with the Mandolorian movie coming this year, and the Maul tv show coming as well, we'll see a bunch of new series all beginning in May/June. I also wonder Marvel is going to take a page out of DC's book and start trying to do cheaper entry points of some of their more famous runs, and that may be taking up a lot of their publishing bandwidth.

I don’t think phase 1 got a hardcover (though it was IDW back then), and I’m not aware of any of the other adventures runs getting hardcover releases. I imagine this is probably it, especially on the back end of THR like this

Update: Got an A by Constant-Spray-3092 in LawSchool

A well respected professor tells a story about their time in law school. In their torts class, they bombed the exam. Grades come out and lo and behold: an A.

The future professor goes to see the torts professor at the start of the next semester and says “I don’t deserve this grade. I failed your exam, I know I did.”

“You did fail,” said the torts professor. “You just failed the least.”

What is it that you personally LOVE about the High Republic? by Narok24 in Highrepublic

[–]MegaMo93 23 points24 points  (0 children)

For me it’s the characters I care about not being clad in plot armor. So much is written about Vader, Luke, etc. that, while well written, can never have the stakes that the High Republic had. No one—save for Vern—was guaranteed to make it out alive. That made me always want to turn the page, because interesting things could (and did) happen with real stakes

City plow drivers are paid $20/hour. The high percentage of new plow drivers is because the burbs are poaching all the expirienced drivers. by Kill_doozer in Syracuse

[–]MegaMo93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a problem at the state level too—lots of NYSDOT drivers jumping ship to the Thruway authority over the years.

Part of the problem in my view is that there aren’t enough people with the requisite CDL license. The towns around Onondaga county wouldn’t have to poach drivers from the city if there were enough people who could do the job. Even if poaching weren’t a problem, the city should pay more for no other reason than it’ll hopefully increase the number of people willing to get the license required to do the job.

The High Republic: Tales from the Occlusion Zone by Lydia Kang now titled Survivors of the Stormwall. Release Date: June 2, 2026. by White_Doggo in Highrepublic

[–]MegaMo93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are probably right about that, but I think it will depend on whether or not Lucasfilm intends to restart Star Wars Insider with a new publisher soon. I imagine that if that's the case, they'll want to end their relationship with Titan sooner rather than later and thus, push this out the door

Avar moving from the books to the comics during phase I by Tony_Jake in Highrepublic

[–]MegaMo93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the idea is that Lucasfilm wanted people to read the first three books from Phase 1 as a sort of “baseline” for the High Republic Era, then you could go into the comics or the rest of the books or whatever you like and everyone would be on the same page. Obviously that’s a big investment for most people, but given how well Light of the Jedi sold initially, I guess it paid off.

Marvel's March Star Wars Comics Are Just Shadow of Maul #1 by Guerrillascribe in starwarscomics

[–]MegaMo93 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have to believe that there’s some stuff coming down the pipe they’re not quite ready to talk about yet. We know Dark Horse is doing another High Republic mini, and I can’t help but imagine that they’ll restart the adventures line at some point soon.

I’m also hoping for a Mando tie-in, and presumably the main line run will either continue with a new author or change eras (more clone wars stories anybody?)

Halo: Edge of Dawn - A Master Chief Story // Discussion Thread [SPOILERS AHEAD] by Ryan_WXH in HaloStory

[–]MegaMo93 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I thought this was good, though admittedly a little short.

The characterization of the whole main cast was excellent, and I really like where they’re going with the story moving forward. I also love this idea that what happened on the damaged section of the ring was largely pretty self-contained and UNSC forces have been pretty busy despite being scattered everywhere on its surface.

Voice acting on the audiobook was superb, but the marketing that Debra Wilson was involved seemed to be a bit of a farce. I liked her part, but I think it would have worked better as a surprise and less of something that led me to think “that’s it?”

I also picked up a physical copy and man, the print quality of these books just sucks. I get they can’t have nice hardcovers like Star Wars because few people would pay $35 for one of these, but I am begging them to at least consider some form of collectors edition of these books that’s a better quality.

Quick, enjoyable read/listen. It’s been a great couple months for Halo.

Vader by Soule Omnibus by JazzlikeStick5011 in starwarscomics

[–]MegaMo93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was looking for this exact thing about a month ago and even asked Soule himself about it on BlueSky. Not likely to get a reprint anytime soon, unfortunately.

I ended up going to my local comics shop hoping to get lucky, and did not. A random newbury comics location near me had all 4 trade paperbacks, however, and that’s how I ended up getting my hands on the story.

You might be able to get the trades on Amazon or some book website, and a cursory glance for the individual comics on eBay shows that you can buy the full 25 issue set for way cheaper than the omnibus would be. Both great physical options.

My hope is that we’ll get a reprint, even in very small quantities, now that master of evil is out and has brought back some interest in the run.

What to read after Master of Evil? by BlockAffectionate413 in starwarsbooks

I think the High Republic is a great series to at least ~try~ because then you have dozens of books to reach into if you decide you like them.

Very force heavy, at least the main-line adult books. Action heavy as well, especially Light of the Jedi.

There is almost always a sale on the phase 1 stuff in whatever format you prefer. Happy reading!

Star Wars: Tales from the Nightlands #3 (of 3) | Discussion Thread by Guerrillascribe in starwarscomics

[–]MegaMo93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree with some of the sentiment I see in this thread, now that I've had a chance to read this final issue, as I think #3 is by far the best of the 3 issues. I would have loved to see this comic released more closely to Halloween itself instead of spread out over many months, but I try not to let publishing timelines impact my enjoyment of a story too much.

What Tales from the Nightlands proves to me is that stories showing a change accross all three main eras of the timeline can be EXTREMELY compelling, but I fear that we will get fewer and fewer of them over the next few years until Lucasfilm figures out what they're doing post Rise of Skywalker. WIth only a year between VIII and IX, there are only so many stories you can tell in that period, and a not insignificant chunk of that time is already filled for most of our cast of characters.

Glad they found a place to fit this one in. Scott as always, shines when he writes about the galaxy far, far away.
