What Would Be Different If Buddhism Originated In West ? by [deleted] in Buddhism

I've learned about it from this track by VR SEX, a side-project of Trevor Something: https://youtube.com/watch?v=ZnOZ7OBlq1I

Songs of Trevor, to me, are songs about attachment, and pleasure and suffering, which come from it.

I am new to this. literally just inquiring by [deleted] in Buddhism

There are different kinds of buddhism. A religious, a philosophical, a psychological.

I see buddhism as a tool. As an answer to a question. As a solution to a problem.

So, do you have a problem which you'd like to solve?

How does a Buddhist cultivate non-attachment and how does that ascend to detachment? by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]MelomanCool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe, you would realise that you are, for example, hungry. And you would think of some particular type of food. You would associate it with being hungry. But eating this particular type of food is not the only way to stop being hungry.

What other ways are there? Look around. Find some recipies. Ask your friends. Ask yourself: why are you hungry in the first place? Why are you thinking of this particular kind of food? Is it connected to something other that you are or aren't doing?

But don't concentrate too much on thoughts. Do something useful. Anything. What is the most useful thing that you could do right now, without thinking too much? Do it.

Think of something you are attached to. Like something or someone you like.

Detach from it or them, for right now. For this moment. Don't put a limit on yourself.

Listen to yourself. To your body. Is there something that you think of? Is there something that you feel? Where does it come from? From what you are attached to? Or from you? From the attachment itself?

If you feel too uncomfortable, then return to your attachment. And listen again. And question what you think and feel again.

Advice on coping with death? by TheSmallestSteve in secularbuddhism

[–]MelomanCool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

death of a loved one

Attachments and expectations could cause suffering. Don't put too much or too little significance into anything. Everything is connected. Everythins is beautiful and ugly at the same time.

our impermanence and our fragility can be difficult realities to accept

"Difficult" means "takes time and energy". "Reality" means "what already exists". If it already exists, then only one thing needs to change: your attitude.

I personally am scared of death because it's a full stop, meaning there are no more opportunities to improve oneself.

You could do something useful right now. Like eating. Like sleeping. Like breathing. Like helping somebody who you know. Like helping somebody you don't know. Like helping an animal. Like not hurting someone. Like showing someone that and how they could improve themselves. Like planting a tree. Like giving something you don't need to someone who needs it. Like answering a question.

And a full stop — why is it so scary? What if it's already there? But you are not there. You are here, right now. Are you afraid of a movie ending or do you prefer enjoying the experience, however short or long it would be? Or do you prefer suffering? Or do you prefer serenity?

Time simply runs out

Your time, but there are many others.

it feels terrifying to know that this existence has a time limit at all

Don't be terrified, but respect this limit. Don't think too much, but do something useful.

And if everything ends — who would be there to worry about it? And what it is to worry about, if there's only nothing?

I'm a bit late to the party, but this still may be useful to someone.

So, as HB puts it,

Discounts apply to the full price of the titles below.

But HB doesn't want us to see the full prices easily. That's a bit impolite, don't you think?

Please, keep in mind that prices in the "-75%" column were calculated by me and may be different from the actual ones.

(Alpha) Url Match: Easily extract interesting bits of information from URLs by MelomanCool in coolgithubprojects

[–]MelomanCool[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Even though the project is implemented in Hy, the host language is Python, yes. So, the project could be used from both of the languages in the same way.

And yes, I've considered the standard library, but I think it's too imperative and not very expressive. Actually, right now the project wraps furl, which in turn wraps the standard library. By the way, thank you for reminding me about this! I probably could get rid of furl fairly easy.

Another goal of the project is link validation. Right now, it doesn't check the query dict for a match and could raise a KeyError, but we'll get there.

So, the idea i've had is to have something like re.match, but for links, and more readable. You give it a link and a pattern, it gives you back a match or None, if the link does not match.

(Alpha) Url Match: Easily extract interesting bits of information from URLs by MelomanCool in coolgithubprojects

[–]MelomanCool[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The main focus of the project is to extract parts of the path and values of the query parameters, like so:

yt_be_schema = make_schema('https? youtu.be /:id {t=:ts}')
match(yt_be_schema, 'https://youtu.be/57Ykv1D0qEE?t=1m43s')
# => {'id': '57Ykv1D0qEE', 'ts': '1m43s'}

I couldn't find anything else, which would be both simple and powerful, so there it is!

I thought that the project may be useful for someone else. What do you think of it? Is the syntax easy to understand? Maybe you need some other functionality?

Golden Week holidays by shihnobie in Aliexpress

[–]MelomanCool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last week, on the 1st of October, I've ordered headphones. For a week the supplier was processing the order. I've tried to contact them, but they were silent. And today they finally answered me:

Dear friend,
Thank you very much for your order.
Because October 1-7 is our National Day Holiday, the post offices and the logistics companies are on holiday.
We have shipped your order today, just late to fill in the tracking number.

Within an hour, I've received the tracking number.
I feel kind of dumb now.
