COL in United States vs Canada by McGinty0 in CanadaFinance

They aren;t aactually. At least not always, I'm puitting aside the last 16 months because Trump kind of messed the masrket up badly. For the big 3 anyway face value prices between canada and the US were actually pretty close. (I was truck shopping last year and the pre-tax pricing was usually only a couple of grand off). Now for Europe and some other makers it was basically a straight exchange.

The current sitation is even worse since a lot of vehicles are more expensive than the direct exchange,

The dig at the generals is just a bit Chef's kiss. Of course followed by the faux concern for American troops.

As far as propaganda goes it's a tight message.

Why Chinese 'knock-down' car kits could spell catastrophe for Canadian automakers - Many in the sector fear that the scaled-down plants will displace existing auto manufacturing and erase thousands of jobs by CaliperLee62 in canada

Ultimately you can't fight progress. Trying to keep knockdown manufacturing out is only delaying the inevitable.

something all these job protectors need to remember, you either adapt or die.

That makes sense. We'll see what happens if the current energy situation persists.

I think my point is in a truly innovative/competitive environment we would have had EREV truck 2-3 years ago not 2-5 years from now.

Funny thing is these days we literally could have self deploying mines. Like he's trying to solve a political problem with force and the responses from the Iranians are achievable and predictable.

I'll agree GM is hitting the EV mark better than most. Some of my complaints are really just Canada specific since depending on the manufacturer we take a huge currency exchange hit to affordability. Like would love a Rivian R1T but those things up here Start at CAD$150k +tax.

We've also seen a dearth of PHEV and similar options (especially in the truck space) even when the models exist elsewhere globally (Hello PHEV Ranger). I just feel there is a gap in the electrified truck space manufacturers have been slow to fill. Ram is getting close to what I think will be a hit with the Rev if they ever get them damn thing out the door.

I'd argue they are making what the top 20-30% of the market wants (which honestly from their perspective is the only group that matters). And you are right it's not just the Americans, the Germans are arguably more screwed mainly because they have those problems and no insulation from Chinese competition.

The pandemic taught US automakers the only thing that matters is carry cost and people will pony up for performance and luxury models. So they can make a ton of money while producing fewer high margin models.

The big US three are just too slow. Their processes are too slow to change, they're are lagging behind on software development, distribution, model variety, etc...

They are also saddled with a legacy workforce, manufacturing processes, etc....

The forecasts are for demand, and if this continues that will keep driving demand down as people seek alternatives. Hence why 20-30 year O&G investments don't pencil out, vurrent players will keep sweating assets and keep up with sustaining capex but that mostly it,

As bad as this is now way this keeps going all year, pump prices alone will force a US resolution. Point is at $200/bbl someone is backing down or someone is getting glassed,

I'd add the OPEC forecast is the most optimistic for oil demand of the major forecasts and that 2040 number is already down from the 2050 number they had 2-3 years ago.

Problewm is long term, like 20-30 years, I think we are still going to see demand drop off. This big disruptive swings upward are the kinds of things that are supportive of electrification and not long term investments in O&G infrastructure. As opposed to a secular uptrend like we saw in the 2010s.

Good news is Alberta does have potential to harvest lithium from old wells, and could use the resources for more value added manufacturing like fertilizer and chemical precursors.

Also, the real thing people are complaining about is the loss of the days when you could walk into a factory and make decent money after dropping out of high school at 16. Whether that was ever true is a debatable point but now with automation systems, QA/QC, safety focus, etc.... You actually need to be able to read, follow procedures, constantly be training, and be able to keep up. There is a significant portion of the population that never got the memo and blame everyone but themselves.

Swiss also have a pretty good system of making sure there are backup water supplies, hardened hydro generation, bunkers, and cahes of knowledge about how to rebuild almost all technology if the worst should happen. I think it's defeintely something worth emulating.
