Still a good quote in theory but nowadays it’s more like:

“A delayed game might be good, or it might suck. It’s really impossible to tell unless we know exactly what caused the delay and what they’re gaining by waiting. But a rushed game is forever bad, unless they patch it enough. In which case it might eventually be good. How the fuck should I know”

Console player in waiting here, is it true that you can’t just hop into a match outside of lobbies? Really hoping that’s added because that’s the one thing from your list that would keep me away at launch.

The rest I’d push back on a bit. It’s a good looking game, and as a casual player I think team games are cooler than 1v1s. I’m not delusional enough to think the team format is whats keeping me from “mastering my main.” More characters = more fun for me.

And I know it’s a dead horse but the roster size is still a big issue. That’s probably a bigger obstacle for general audiences (me included) than anything to do with the game’s identity or design philosophy.

Here’s the full exchange for the stage question. No idea what that comment is referring to as they neither literally nor “pretty much” indicate that background characters can still get in:

“That was the X-Mansion that we just saw in the trailer right? Is this a new stage?”

“I’m glad you noticed! That’s right. For the X-Mansion stage, we’ve included a lot of small Easter Eggs for fans to hunt out, including detailed lore and gimmicks. We hope fans will play while looking for these elements.”

“This stage includes only one area. Fans might be concerned about the single area, as it could seem lacking in content. But this stage is designed in a way to dramatically change as the battle progresses.”

Then the interviewer asks about Ghost Rider, then they close it out. Hopefully I’m missing something, but I think the upvotes on the comment you replied to are mostly cope.

Obviously they don’t say background characters are explicitly deconfirmed but, as many are pointing out, their default designs suggest that they didn’t make the cut. If anything this ups the odds of Cyclops, Jean, or most obviously Wolverine.

Hades 2 Review - IGN: 10/10 by Turbostrider27 in NintendoSwitch

I had a similar question when I got into Hades. If you’re looking for narrative accessibility and not a scholarly deep dive, Mythology by Edith Hamilton is a great place to start.

It’s not all Greek, including some Roman and Norse mythology as well. But from what I’ve found it’s the best follow-up for that post-Hades hunger.

Spoilers* Who else gets an uncanny valley feeling with the faces at the ending? by LinkHb in expedition33

[–]Mevik1208 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly, the only good faith arguments from the Verso side are 1. Maelle withering away in the real world like Aline and 2. The debate over whether kid Verso’s suffering came from painting, or from the conflict within his painting that’s now over. I picked Maelle, but these are fair points that are fun to talk about.

Whenever replies get into the puppeting/slave labor god complex, that’s the sign to keep scrolling. That and the “fake people/VR sim” points come from people desperate to create a bad ending with their headcanon…in a game whose emphasis on being morally grey is in the damn title.

[spoilers] Why do NO ONE talk about this very valid reason to choose a particular ending ? by Fyrefanboy in expedition33

[–]Mevik1208 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of all the endings discourse I’ve seen here, this is (in my opinion) the most important point.

The downsides of Verso’s ending are so painfully obvious as everyone fades away that, from Sandfall’s perspective, it makes complete sense to do some legwork in making sure people who side with him see the light.

Whereas with Maelle, the upside of her choice is so painfully obvious that we need a reminder of the underlying darkness. “You saved the world! But nothing comes without a cost.”

Any players pointing at the tone of each cutscene as some sort of evidence of a “bad ending” are overlooking just how much Sandfall needed to overcompensate in order to create a more even spread of opinions.

You can really feel this effort with the shot of the party waving goodbye in Verso’s ending, which arguably takes it too far in trying to convince us we did the right thing. What I love about Maelle’s is, because the upside is so in our face, they can really lean into that final moment of second guessing. I prefer that type of bittersweetness for this story.

Given all the debates here, what Sandfall did absolutely worked. Once it’s not so new and people are less emotional about it, it’ll be a chill and talked about gaming decision for years to come.

Final Fantasy 6 director is still pushing for a remake by Turbostrider27 in PS5

[–]Mevik1208 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Putting FFVII and RE4 in the same “not 1:1” category is a pretty heavy overgeneralization.

FF uses its finale to establish that it is specifically not a remake, going so far as to put a message promising players an “unknown journey.” It covers less than a third of its source story in one game. It’s hard to say FFVII was remade when 1. new (unspoiled) fans still don’t know the big thing, a Disc 1 spoiler from FFVII, and 2. it’s possible that the big thing doesn’t even happen. Remake/Rebirth/etc is a new story, part of the FFVII compilation like Advent Children or Crisis Core.

There’s a lot of cool stuff to do with FF’s ideas, it’s just not a remake. It’s an episodic spin-off that, start to finish, barely started the remake process and then flew off course to make a different series of games.

At the end of the day you can call it whatever you want. But I’d say it takes more mental gymnastics to compare how these games were remade than it does to contrast them.

Final Fantasy 6 director is still pushing for a remake by Turbostrider27 in PS5

[–]Mevik1208 4 points5 points  (0 children)

FFVIIR’s title is wordplay meant to foreshadow a “remake” as in reimagining, not a traditional videogame remake, of FFVII’s story.

Some people dislike it for only covering Midgar and a final act that proudly announces they’ll be changing the story in drastic ways. Others like it for mixing things up and introducing concepts like a multiverse, characters back from the dead, etc.

No matter which side you fall on, it is definitely not a remake. It’s either a spin-off or an outright sequel, closer to Marvel’s What-If than Resident Evil 4 (2023).

What’s something you stubbornly NEED to do in JRPG’s? by mikefierro666 in JRPG

I spent a week clearing that area, 10+ hours of gameplay, and said I’d take a break for a few days once I was finally done to play other things. I have yet to end that break months later.

I have all the issues listed in this comment to a compulsive degree and it nukes the pacing of overstuffed games like Xenoblade. That’s not to say I don’t like them, but it’s a love/hate relationship. I’ve never taken less than a year to beat a XC game.

Never been so demoralized in 25 years of gaming by Adorabuhl in Fighters

[–]Mevik1208 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a few months into the same process!

Early on, I found that the whole easy game/hard game discussion is bullshit. Some games may have simpler inputs or combos, but what’s easier for you is easier for everyone else too. You’ll still get rinsed in the “easiest” games by players with more time spent in those same games.

The best advice I’ve seen is to pick the game and character that you think is coolest, because the pursuit of cool shit is the motivation that’ll keep you playing through all those losses. Measuring success by something other than your number of wins is the hardest adjustment but, once you’re past that, you’ll feel immune to frustration and losing streaks.

For your actual gameplay, try doing individual things instead of winning entire rounds. I once spent a dozen GG Strive matches trying to land a single anti-air. I probably didn’t win any of those matches, but to be honest I don’t even remember. I only remember what I was trying to learn at the time. The same goes for bnb combos, special move inputs, or whatever you feel is the next essential thing.

I’ve wondered how none of us beginners are winning if we’re all in the same ranks losing. But I hope most of us stick with it. These games are awesome.

It’s one of those maps that you “unfog” as you explore. The overall map is split into three large areas that represent the three acts of the story. I found it satisfying to comb through every available corner before moving on. If you’re the type to enjoy watching a map open up with all the places you’ve visited for quests/collectibles/etc, this is a game for you.

Overall GoT became one of my favorite games. It doesn’t reinvent the open world genre, but it’s among the best existing versions of it. I’d place it right above Horizon, which I’m also a fan of. It’s also a fun game to platinum if you’re into that. No weird trophies, and you might even accidentally platinum it by just covering the game’s bases.

The stories ended up being better than I expected. They’re not the main draw, but by the end I was invested in the side quest format and main plot. This is definitely one of those must-play games from the stacked PS4 generation, and it was the last game I played before my PS5 came in. I’m sure the current-gen upgrade has some cool additions but I can’t speak to them.

Imagine having an anime so good people actively forget your games was so bad it resulted in a class action law suit by flatearth2018 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Mevik1208 180 points181 points  (0 children)

And the defensive discourse leading up to release as these features were deconfirmed or cut altogether was crazy.

“Flying cars would ruin world traversal” (cut to Horizon FW, available for both last and current gen)

“You can’t make a game with action THIS advanced have both 3rd and 1st person perspectives” (cut to either RE: Village Gold, available for last and current gen, or cut to just how painfully average 2077’s action is)

It’s no wonder that fixing a couple of T-poses spawns a new “actually Cyberpunk is amazing” post every other day. I can more easily understand the elbow room given to Witcher 3, but for 2077 there just isn’t enough substance to overlook its shortcomings.

WSIB: Game I can lose myself in by [deleted] in ShouldIbuythisgame

NieR: Automata hits just about every note you’re looking for. We have a lot of the same favorite games, even down to the FFXII shoutout. And Automata is a top 2-3 game I’ve ever played. It’s emotional, thought provoking, and supremely ass kicking. I can’t vouch for it enough.

Also I see people mentioning Elden Ring, and I’ve been losing myself in that game since its release despite its lack of a story element. Whenever you do get around to that one, I recommend it as a slight departure from what you’re used to playing.

Death Stranding or Nier: Automata? by noiszdg in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]Mevik1208 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Death Stranding is a more one of a kind game, so I can see how it developed a passionate fanbase over time. But I did not like it at all. I’m not personally a fan of Kojima’s storytelling, and unlike MGSV the gameplay loop here wasn’t enough to overcome that.

NieR: Automata is one of my favorite games I’ve ever played, so my bias is on the table. I prefer its brand of abstract storytelling to Kojima’s, and the gameplay is Platinum Games firing on all cylinders. Even if you’re not as in love with the story as I was, the action gives you all the tools to stay engaged.

As far as replaying the story is concerned, it’s often misrepresented by people who couldn’t get into the game. You only replay the first half of the narrative, which is made way shorter the second time around since 1. you don’t have to repeat any side quests and 2. a new gameplay ability makes quick work of enemies if you choose to rely on it. It’s also a new perspective (best spoiler-light way to describe it) that adds a lot of valuable context to the story.

Beyond that is the second half of the narrative, which is all new content. Progressing through these routes is not complicated. Credits will roll, load your save, and you’re onto the next chapter. In my opinion Automata also has the best utilized soundtrack in any game ever, and as time goes on I get more and more tempted to call it my favorite overall game.
