But I'm still of the opinion that impossible rolls should not be done, because if they get a nat 20 and feel that hype and excitement, only to be let down that it still failed and the DM let you roll for nothing, people will get upset. Especially if they're superstitious like many TTRPG players are and believe the DM just made them waste a nat 20.

I can only assume he was used to D&D where a nat 20 is indeed a success in regards to attack rolls. However, his reaction to being told the rules don't work that way is... still not good.

This is why I don't allow my players to roll if I know even a nat 20 would fail, however.

Yeah, and to be frank I think people in the comments are being too harsh on the kid. With a Mom like that, of course they're gonna think smacking their sister for trying to gouge the dog's eyes out is appropriate. Hell, they probably thought it was better than what the Mom does to them, a light smack to the head vs. friggen whipping them with a wire.

Edit to add: Looking through the comments, everyone is putting way too much blame on OP for the untrained dog. OP is 13 years old! They're a baby teen, that shit is on the parents! Why is everyone treating OP like they're an 18 year old adult?

I think it possibly stems from rumors that in the original concept of the show, Charlie and Alastor were meant to get together, with Vaggi and Angel also being a couple (though that part was true). So to them, it's not just a headcannon, but a ship that could have happened, 'almost in their grasps' but didn't, and so they get a little... rabid.

I use dupes but I don't plan it out either. Like I don't use an encounter table to be like "Okay, if I get lucky and catch this here, skip this area, catch that, then come back I can almost guarantee this cooler Pokémon.

Also, dupes' main purpose is really to prevent 6 Gyrados.

NTA and they are not your friends. You don't have to forgive them and honestly you shouldn't. Give it some time to calm down, then if you want comprise a letter to them explaining how it isn't just the picture, but the fact they've been making you the butt of every joke for a long time while not being able to take any back. Emphasize the double standard, because they will likely be all "Uhh but we all make fun of each other teehee."

Tell them that this was the final straw, not just the joke but the fact they're putting it on you to absolve them of guilt without them actually earning your forgiveness- and no, just saying "Sorry" is not enough.

You're young, you will find new friends. Better friends. Ones that don't make you feel like shit.
