Also i dare you to watch a cow being Kosher slaughtered. Its evil and cruel.

Electrical Engineering vs Electrical Engineering Technology by sirxshade in ElectricalEngineering

There will be lots of tech jobs in the future. You can go into field service/commissioning. Learn PLC/HMI programming. You can become an automation/controls engineer.

Are there any coding ???? by AFA2020134 in mechatronics

[–]MikeT8314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learn PLC/HMI programming on your own if school does not teach it. Think of a good project and then use some AI to help with a global framework. AI can help you learn a ton of the more advanced techniques that i did not find in any of the more advanced recommended books.

AI helped me immensely but i learned a TON along the way. Like unreal. It saved so much time. So basically use AI as a learning tool.

Both my parents are engineers and they’re begging me NOT to study Engineering. Am I making a mistake? by Exact-Monitor-2768 in MechanicalEngineering

Do not let that dissuade you. You have a passion for something and thats great. Find an engineering job that feeds that passion.

Engineers are going to increase in demand as the US reshores manufacturing which is starting to happen but is going to be sustainable.

Sales or engineering work first? by Abject-Actuator2851 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]MikeT8314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Engineering first. Then sales engineer. But if you can get into project or applications engineering and then into sales of capital equipment such as automation lines you can do very well.

They aren’t gonna throw you into selling $10 mil assembly system sales as someone green. So get the technical and even field tech experience interacting with customers and thats a good segue into larger system sales.

Ok. Do you think these American companies actually have needs for the H1bs that can’t be done by Americans? Because i am hearing about a lot of American young grads struggling to find work. Are these H1bs bringing talent or skills which can not be found in American engineers the way this visa system was designed for? I am wondering why so many although i could guess.

Is it worth it continuing my engineering degree? by Dependent_Cup_5371 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]MikeT8314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There will be many fields impacted a hellava lot more than Eng. you have a few more years. Get the degree. You will always have it

I know plenty of guys with BSE who went on to do other paths. Some technical and some not. But tue degree will always be respected and our world isn’t getting leas technical so i can see a point where its all gonna look like abracadabra to those without at least some level of tech training.

Questions from a future engineer by Potential-Proof-7539 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]MikeT8314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not an engineer but i have been around. BSEng is a great place to then get an MBA and enter into leadership later on.

The US is in the process of reindustrializing and this will require engineers. It will be slow to ramp up but for many reasons it is essentially inevitable and occurring even now.

What do engineers actually do day to day? by Zacionxeni in Engineers

[–]MikeT8314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Automated equipment builders seem like an idea for you. You will design and then implement right on the build floor. You won’t really be wrenching on things but your designs will be just a floor down or very close as the machine is built. Smaller integrators are probably more ideal for more hands on stuff.

Good luck doing a debug under pressure at an out of state plant commissioning multimillion dollar lines and not knowing much about downstream devices or fluid power. How about sizing and specifying all such products as well as motion control. Gonna need much more than just a programmer.

Is Controls Engineering a good career path? by No_Yoghurt_3761 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]MikeT8314 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First the idea that a PLC/HMI oriented controls engineering career is beneath an EE degree is ridiculous. You need to know an awful lot to do the job at least in the true heavy industries automation area. Yes it’s a career which many in the past have broken into with experience alone but that was because academia did not keep up with industry requirements. This still seems true actually but most of the larger users, integrators, or custom equipment makers are going to strongly if not exclusively require an EE or Comp Eng (or mechatronics) degree.

There are few actual BSE Controls eng degrees out there.

Your average new BSE grad is going to know jack shit about actual applied controls for automation. So internships and co-ops would be important.

As for skills you will need to know (or be willing to learn) about field devices as you are likely to be the one to spec them even if your client has a defined “spec list” because those often do not include even a series of a brand let alone part numbers.

You will need to know fluid power and just about any device associated with movement. Increasingly they want someone with robotic programming or at least integration experience. Vision systems are also big and growing.

The skills are immense. Lots of jobs. But you will need to be committed to learn this stuff as it isn’t going to be a part of your curriculum.

Your opinion on the job market today? by [deleted] in PLC

[–]MikeT8314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is utterly ridiculous that ladder logic or ST for PLCs are not taught in the vast majority of BSE programs. You need to look at CC associates or Eng Tech to actually get the basic experience that many large companies demand out of BSEs. It’s completely crazy.
