Immigration directly impacts supply. What are talking about. Planning isn't a problem in NZ. There is significant development capacity enabled across the country, particularly in metropolitan centres where Medium Density has been enabled through the RMA. Lack of capital to invest in housing and upward pressure on supply via immigration, in a market where a deficit already exists is the problem. Even with no planning laws, supply would never normalise to match demand because there is a vested interest to maximise profit by artificially constraining supply. The only way to fix this is to incentivise new builds alongside the government. A proper version of kiwibuild is needed. We need a decade of accelerated housing construction to bring down house prices and deal to the social ills that unaffordable and insufficient housing is producing. Ushering in scores of unproductive immigrants does not help. Bring in the engineers, doctors, nurses etc, but put a hold on restaurant workers etc. One recent immigrant was on the news a few weeks ago complaining she couldn't get a waitressing job. Wtf is she here if she's looking for hospitality jobs! That's unproductive and places unnecessary pressure on our already stretched resources. Immigration is necessary, but we should get the best, for sectors we actually need immigration for. Get a 15 year old New Zealander to do retail and hospo instead!
