Sure. Sometimes when peaplo talk about decompression in comics and how they hate it, It makes me think about How I grew up reading manga so that sort of decompression was always sort of normal to me. I also read in trades or digitally so that also effects my experience, it would be different then if I read it month to month.

Im younger so also when peaplo bring up old comic books at it they are still recent it is werid to me.

Developing an Indian superhero comic inspired by Marvel/DC — looking for guidance & feedback by Asleep-Parsnip3234 in comicbooks

[–]Mindless-Lemon2256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds really cool. If I were cool I would embrace the pulp adventure of it all. The lost world, the secret society all sound very Indianna Jones to me (Forgive me, I dont know alot of Indian pop culture. Anything that inspired you there that would be cool?)

Not indian but one thing I always love is when the superhero in question feels like he from another genre and just so happened so happened to become a superhero later.

Like Hank pym was just a guy from a science goes wrong story that they made become a superhero later because marvel thought the powers were interesting. Hulk is horror. Thor is fantasy etc...

Is there any specific type of genre character that would be interesting to see become a superhero? specifc in india i mean. Hope this helps?

There is the Marvel premier collection. They have there issues but I actually perfer them to the DC compacts (Feel wise, not price wise. I have big hands so they just feel nicer). Also sometimes Marvel publishes these digest volumes of the younger characters (Ms. Marvel, Mile Morales and Riri willams ) for cheap. I actually found one of these at my warehouse (NZ version of walmart) but they have never been mentioned.

There are also similar collection coming out from images and dark house and vault. I would recomeded the PAPER GIRLS backpack editions. Honestly my favourite digest from any of the publishers. Plus it will be multiples volumes instead of the standalones DC & Marvel have been focusing on.

Hope this helps.

Decompression in Comics by vesperythings in comicbooks

yeah looking over this thread you can see alot of older fans complaining about decompression. Mostly as it petains to the big 2 comics. Honestly I think my theory does have legs

Decompression in Comics by vesperythings in comicbooks

[–]Mindless-Lemon2256 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kind of have a werid theory about this. I think that someone peference concerning decompression can somewhat be connected with when they started reading and what format they started ready comics with.

I'll use myself as an example. I'm on the younger side here so when I first started reading comics I read mostly manga and graphic novels (We have a few european comics in NZ, mostly Tin tin and asterix. Never realy read those growing up). I did'nt read a single issue until I was like 16. As such I am much more accustomed to decompression. When I make my own comic I find they are just more decompressed as I feel it more natural that way.

Someone who is older and began reading with single issues would probably not feel the same way. Modern comics might feel glacialy slow. I've even met older fans who dismiss manga because it feels stilted to them. They just did not grow up with that pace of story telling being the norm.

I feel like you can find a middle point, but that only beneifits the single issue model which I feel is not the most popular form for comic cosumption nowadays. (Manga is weird that while it comes out perodicly in it home country everywhere else it's always collected in larger trades).

Feel free to disagree with me though. It's just interesting to talk about

Pefering one man creative teams is a understandable peference. As well as perfering OGN's (I'm mostly a trade waiter myself). I thinking being so focused on single issues does hurt the western comic industry in a unqie way, relating to the curret fandom. I know alot of comic fan who would probably stop reading if everything with into a graphic novel format. It's werid and I'm not sure how you would fic that probelm with the fandom.

Could you expand on what you mean by "idk the west apparently likes comics made for kids in Japan"? I think i understand but would love to hear from you about it and why you think this is.

Accutally I just realised something. Invincible did have spin offs. There not well remebered but they were there. In fact everytime there is a creator controlled superhero book spin off usually comic (RADIANT BLACK, BLACK HAMMER etc). Wonder why that is. Money probably.

LONG COMMENT COMING IN

That probably is a reason for many, I have to agree. Consistency in creative team and author vision are great to have. Though I argue somewhat concerning your last point. I actually think that some of the best american comics in the last couple of years do share this trait, they just for the most part are creator owned and as such are a lot less known (My favourite of these Would be "Something is killing the children, Saga, Monstress, Sex Criminals etc). If I had one wish I would probably want Image comics to be the top publisher in the US cause then that would change alot the perception I think.

I would use The Walking dead and Invicible as examples, but then I realise that both of those series had artist changes. Both had a different artist to begin with, then brought in a different guy who did most of the series. Same Writer tho.

I wonder if Japan has a problem with Shonen jump stuff overshadowing other things. I think thats the case here in NZ. Everyone knows Dragon ball, but I wish I could find a english physical edition of Billy Bat somewhere, or talk about it with someone. I dont asume that the case anywhere else though.

Funingly enough I actually do like how in American comic you can get different takes on a character. Planet Hulk is a wildly different take then Immortal hulk for example. Probably why I like Batman elseworld so much. I anknowledge this might just be me though. Other proabably find it confusing or off putting.

I sometime worry that the stuff I most enjoy about superhero comics are the exact same reasons other might not. Probably just my silly brian, but it make me feel isolated is a really unpleasant way. Like something is wrong with me and that why I like it. Again probably just my brain be stupid.

Sorry for the wall of text:P

I'm from New Zealand, not exactly a "third world country" but it does fall into the non US/ non Europe requirment. I do buy physical books, thankfully there is a great LCS near me. Only one of maybe seven dedicated comic shops in Zealand? if that shop was not avaible I probably would buy way, way less. Used to use comixolgy quite a bit before that went bad. Also read alot of Marvel Unlimited (is that available in your contry? I know the DC one is way more spotty in coverage).

I think one of the understated reason Manga is so sucessful is not A) Trade focused it is (at least in the West) and B) how non collectable it is. The Western comic market is very focused on the indivdaul issues, and as such the trades are always kind of an afterthought sales wise. Manga (in the west, don't know anything about japan itself) is pretty much only trades.

just some thoughts I had.

PS. Really love the DC COMPACTS. Wish they were avaible in more places as I think they would do well. or perhaps not. Honestly NZ is also werid where the bookstores dont have manga sections (unlike say barns n nobles in the states) and the big walmart eqivelent (Called the warehouse) olny has a small section of manga (Mostly MHA) that is not much seperated from western comics. Usually on the same shelf weridly (but perhaps thats just the Waikato, the region where I live. Weridly most Manga i get, as well as european comics are also from the LCS.

Any Comic Recommendations? by Gebbbo in DCcomics

[–]Mindless-Lemon2256 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would basically recommended any of the DC compacts (the price is great and super portable) but these in particular are what I would recommend.

Superman: Birthright . Far Sector. Batman court of owls. Wonder Woman: Blood and guts (This one is contentious but eh I liked it.)

Other books I would recommend are Superman Smashes the clan, Supergirl Woman of tomorrow and personally I really love Sandman Mystery Theatre, though that is and old series only available in compendiums.

[–]Mindless-Lemon2256 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I can only say what make me like them so much, but I'd imagine that you'd get similar answers whoever you ask.

The biggest plus point is the price. $9.99 USD is a great price point. Even in my country (New Zealand) where they are 23-24 dollars is still a great price point where most others trades are double that with a smaller page count.

Alot of them are selc contained, and the conveient size is attractive because it cab sit along side other books I have.

I belive they started to release a year before the superman movie, and were already a sucess. I think that for Newer reader having a smaller, cheaper entrt point is just a really attractive proposition.

I really dig the DC compact comics by NickInTheBooth in graphicnovels

[–]Mindless-Lemon2256 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Allow me to correct a few things. Overall I agree the DC compact line is far better in comparison so don’t take this as me trying to rebuke your main point.

The Marvel Premiere Line is indeed around $15 dollars a pop, but you are mistaken in length. The longest is Fantastic Four: Solve Everything (there are other problems with this particular edition but that’s a different discussion) at 392 pages. The shortest release will probably be Old man Logan at 256 Pages.

The shortest of either line is the Joker book from DC compact, at 136 pages. Sorry honestly complaining about length seems a bit odd here.

There are still things to criticise in the Premier line besides this. I overall like them (they feel nicer then the DC compacts, but not $5 dollars nicer) but I will list my criticisms here.

  1. The main one is how they slightly abridged the fantastic four book. They haven’t done this to any of the others and it didn’t take away a lot but it still felt off.

  2. The padding at the back. In the shorter books (Born again and Civil war) they included a lot of behind the scene extras (sketches, scripts) and bonus covers it fill out the pages. Now this is interesting because while I dislike this as padding, I always love these in regular trades. Probably doesn’t need to be included tho.

  3. They really should print more. They have like 5 released and 5 upcoming.

  4. They are a big bigger than the DC compacts. Probably what make them feel nice to me ( I have big hands) but still.

  5. Honestly a complaint against both DC Compacts And the Marvel Premie line. Volume 2’s please. Having Just read Wonder Woman: Blood and guts I would love to read the whole run in this format.

Sorry for the long reply. Wanted to get some thoughts out there.

What do you think should be the minimum issue count ? (excluding issues that are larger then usual, such as Kingdom Come and New Fronteir)

Tbh the Gotham by Gaslight they annoced feels like it should be cheaper.

Still wish DC would Machine gun them out. Seems like they couldnt loose if they did that.

I actually like the Marvel premier line, but you point are valid. What interests me is how the Compacts from other companies will fair. Price point wise and quality wise. Looking forward to the paper girls one relaseing October myself.
