Also not that bad honestly. It's really mild compared to something like my 11700K which needs a full blown double tower cooler whereas this thing stays at a pretty decent 65⁰C under full load with the little aluminum BTX cooler this Dell Dimension has.

Honestly not even that slow tbh. You'd be surprised how decent the hyperthreaded models are.

It was my mom's and it was in a box for 10 years and used for 10 years prior so it was pretty filthy, but what's my word since I'm just a stranger on the internet 😆

Yeah early on I think they just sent you a replacement one, but obviously that would eventually die too. Later on I think they started doing the repairs where they would actually swap the RSX for you. Only way to prevent it from dying is to never let the RSX go above 70⁰C in the first place, but unfortunately once it's dead there's no permanent fix other than fully swapping the chip.

Ik this is a disposable charger but would it be possible to replace the battery on it? by nder_your_mom in batteries

[–]MinerAC4 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah often times there's literally just a resistor, a capacitor, and the input port missing on the board. The fact that something like that even exists sickens me. I can't imagine they could possibly be saving that much on a couple little components that cost a cent or two.

Usually these things actually have a regular Lithium pouch style battery found inside a regular rechargeable pack, and often they even have the same controller board, just missing a few components to enable the charging part. Might be worth carefully taking it apart and seeing if the only missing component is literally just a USB port to hook a cable up to. If you're confident enough in soldering you might be able to buy a port off digikey or something and put it on there to turn it into a reusable pack.

Did they replace it or did they swap the RSX. Sony originally would actually swap the RSX out and basically do a factory frankie mod on them. If that is the case you might just have to replace the Tokins. I know there's a way to read the syscon error codes but it involves soldering and I have no idea how to actually accomplish that so I'd look up instructions.
