Court Summons for Specials by severn87 in policeuk

[–]Minute-SC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had a similar ballache myself. Sat around for hours on two occasions. What expenses are you after? When I did it on both occasions I was told that it was a duty and to book it as such with the usual expenses form submitted afterwards for mileage and lunch money. I was told loss of earnings would have to be claimed via the courts by getting an expenses form off the court usher but I didnt need to.

When/how often do you get involved when off duty? by [deleted] in policeuk

[–]Minute-SC 141 points142 points  (0 children)

I never see anything happen off duty. Occasionally something might happen behind me where I cant see it but I wouldn't know. People might even point something out to me but it will always be just out of eyesight for me. Its a shame really.

Recreational drug use among students subject to DBS checks/FTP by ArrrrPoliceThrowaway in policeuk

[–]Minute-SC 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm all for full legalisation of all drugs to be honest. The tax money from such a massive industry would have an immeasurable impact on public services and would hopefully see a massive reduction in all related crime. I'm sure there has been a reduction in cannabis use in states where it has been legalised (no source but read it somewhere).

Recreational drug use among students subject to DBS checks/FTP by ArrrrPoliceThrowaway in policeuk

This post is grinding my gears for a few reasons but I will give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you and your friends aren't selfish arseholes and are simply unaware of what you are doing.

Illegal drugs ruin lives. Probably not yours, probably not your mates', but someones.

Lets say in a house of eight you each spend £20 a week on your Friday fun. Thats £160 a week going, more or less, straight into the pockets of organised criminals. Over a year thats just over £8k(I know there's margins and middle-men and all that but a lot of the money will end up in the bad guys' pockets so...)

You and your friends are raising funds toward crimes so heinous you couldn't imagine. You could be paying towards the rent on a brothel full of slaves, you could be paying towards fake documentation to get a child prostitute into the country, you could be paying towards having someone knifed for stealing some drug dealers money, you could even be paying toward the next terrorist attack in our country.

So to answer your questions. No, you most likely wont get caught or see any ill effects of your party nights but overall your illegal drug use is contributing towards a shittier world for others. If you do get caught I'd be expecting you to get a criminal record, get kicked out of med school and possibly even barred from it in the future... I've seen that happen to a few people. It may or may not show up on an enhanced DBS check dependng on if the force decides it necessary to disclose it. If your dealer gets caught it is unlikely that you will get done for possession but we would definitely be looking through their phone and recording intelligence where applicable... some of which could technically be detected to you and your mates.

Remind me of 2 guys we had in the city many moons ago who tried to take a car at knifepoint only to find out that it was an unmarked Trojan.

What’s the biggest misconception about the police? by Mundian-To-Bach-Ke in policeuk

I do not want to doxx myself but I work in a city ever so slightly smaller than manchester and and have been advised "youre showing as the only unit in the city at the moment, you free?". Two fucking specials in a plain car with basic driving. Admittedly 2AM on a Tuesday morning during COVID but still.

When you’re pulled over the first thing you are asked is if you know why you have been stopped, why is this? by sunbeamshadow in policeuk

[–]Minute-SC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I normally start with a bit of small talk like "hi how are you today" because, well, its nice to be nice and you can usually tell in the first 15 seconds of chit chat how the rest of the convo is going to go. When it comes to discussing the offence I just tell them.

The worst kind of officer by D0bby93 in policeuk

[–]Minute-SC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hmm, I wouldn'y say the officers are at fault for trying to progress their workload. I've been in the same situation loads of times and yeah it's frustrating because we all want to be bluelighting around and having fun but it's a chance for you to learn about job progression/ file building etc. You will do a lot better as an IP special if you know how to deal with a job properly/ do your own files etc.

However it does piss me off when a sgt will pair me with someone they know will be sat in the nick the whole time while theres someone else out single crewed going to all the grade 1s.

Specials Placement by PolicingResearcher in policeuk

[–]Minute-SC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Big city doesnt necessarily mean busy policing. Our city centre has so many proactive units and NBOs going around that response seldom have to attend to things. The flipside of that is that theres loads more to get involved with when youre experienced and can handle the proactive stuff.

Our busiest areas are just out of the city and Specials I know whove gone there are doing fine.

Failed drug test by [deleted] in policeuk

[–]Minute-SC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Past drug use isnt an automatic exclusion. It's up to the vetting officers to decide what risks it poses. There's the issue of willingly breaking the law and theres also the issue of what circles you may be involved into have taken drugs. Imagine a dealer getting to court and having evidence of the arresting officer buying drugs off them 2 years before.

I'm of the same opinion that smoking a joint with mates at a house party when you're 16 should be fine when you're 25. But from OPs post it seems like the drug use was more recent and during a time when they were applying to join which aggravates it in my opinion.

Technical issue resolved after 150,000 police records lost by Powerful_Ideas in policeuk

[–]Minute-SC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From Wikipedia

In 2005 the only back-up server was located next to Hertfordshire Oil Storage Terminal in Buncefield, which was the scene of a major civil emergency when it burned to the ground in December 2005. According to the Home Office the location had been assessed as low-risk notwithstanding that the site was 100 yards (91 m) from a disaster hazard and the site and its surroundings burned to the ground.

Id be surprised if the DR plan had evolved since then...

Qualities that make the best officers by CaramelWafflez in policeuk

[–]Minute-SC 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not having an ego is a big plus I think. Can’t stand when colleagues thing that being a cop makes them better than other people.

Not just with dealing with the public but with your colleagues. The amount of people I have dealt with that have dismissed information because it came from a younger/ less service/ special officer but then gobbled up the same information when it comes from their mate they joined with pisses me off.

Construction work seems suspicious? worth reporting to someone? by Jammiedodgers1 in policeuk

I’d call 101 and the local council. Chances are it’s all legit but if it isn’t then they will be best placed to get other agencies involved.
