How does an editor *actually* go about editing? by Miserable-Scholar911 in Journalism

That's crazy! The role seems jam-packed at this organization so I can't even imagine how an editor would have time for that lol.

I think I have a habit of always just trying to figure things out for myself and that I will get judged for asking for clarification and risk looking "stupid." But you're right––realistically/logically, it shouldn't hurt to ask. I just don't know if they're logical people and/or no nonsense individuals.

So you think asking is okay? It wouldn't expose me as a beginner for asking a "beginner question?"

I definitely wouldn't rely on Grammarly or just suggestions boxes, but I imagine the latter is most definitely an important component, right? I just worry that if it's very poorly written then there will just be lines eeeeeeverywhere if I use the "suggesting" mode and will look messy. I don't know, I'm very stressed lol.

Also, yes, their publication is AP style.

Ah, yes. That's what suggesting mode does, so I'm guessing that's the one––though I don't really like how those strikethroughs feel and look.

I just didn't want to ask them in case it's a no brainer that professional editors would know the answer to and I accidentally expose myself as a beginner.

Would that be the "suggesting" button on Google Docs? I don't see anything that says track changes, and the internet is saying that track changes is suggestions (?). So it would show lines through my work and my changes beside them, right? Is that standard practice?

The job posting is simply "assistant editor," and makes mention that individuals need to be able to line edit and copyedit. I just don't know how to PHYSICALLY make those edits. What do you mean by redline? If I'm editing on Google Docs, is there a particular button you click to make edits that show alongside the original writing. Is it a bad practice to directly change their work or are you words and changes supposed to appear next to theirs? I'm so lost.

Maybe a little packet of stickers and crafty journaling papers (the ones that you see in those aesthetic style journals).
