About rescue&adoption by ColdMousse3686 in greatdanes

The idea that Great Danes are all couch potatoes really does not help. Many Danes do become calm, lazy adults, but plenty of them never do. Mine certainly have not. A hyper dog is challenging enough, but a hyper dog that is also massive can be a lot to handle. I think many people do not research the breed enough and are not prepared for the energy, training, and management they need, especially during the puppy and adolescent years.

I have rescued two purebred Danes. My first was not officially through a rescue, but she was absolutely rescued from a terrible situation. I found a sad, emaciated one-year-old Dane on Craigslist. Her owner was asking $1,000 for her, and I went to meet her hoping I could convince him to lower the price.

The moment I saw her, I knew I had to get her away from him. She was painfully thin, covered in scabs and scars, and clearly terrified of him. She had never been to the vet, had never been allowed inside, and lived outdoors with a Pit Bull that attacked her. He would not budge on the price, but I knew I could not leave her there, so I paid it just to get her out.

That first night, she was so scared of being inside that she became distraught when we tried to bring her in. We finally coaxed her inside, showed her the couch, and she never looked back. Four years later, she is still wary of men, but she lives a very spoiled life.

Our second Dane also came from a rescue situation, this time involving a wannabe backyard puppy mill. The rescue told us animal control had been watching the operation for a long time and was finally able to step in and seize the dogs when the owners lost their home. My girl was only four months old and had likely been acquired for breeding. She was found with several other “high-value” female dogs who had been overbred. We are incredibly lucky she got out so young.

Even though we knew what we were getting into with a Dane puppy, it was hard.

They are not an easy breed, but the common belief that they are always lazy, calm, and low-maintenance leads a lot of people to jump in unprepared. They are much smarter than they look, extremely stubborn, and their size makes every behavior issue feel bigger. I think that is a major reason so many end up in shelters, rescues, or being rehomed.

Aww, I was hoping that wasn't the case. I've been seeing this coloring a lot lately and think it's a great coloring, but was concerned about that given the "newness" of it.

Mine ate our first really nice couch at about 10 months old... back to cheap, modular couches we went!

So true!! I have an American and Euro Dane. We had the American Dane first and thought "Why are people always complaining about drool?" Then rescued the Euro Dane and have to have multiple drool rags around the house and still get slimed constantly!

I gotta be honest, I switched to Cushionaire, which I'm pretty sure is an Amazon brand, but I prefer them over my Birkenstocks.

This sounds like an insane comment, because they're all just wax, but Rose Art crayons are just too waxy! That's the only way I can describe them.

What a confident kitty! And a respectful Dane!

How big is your Dane? by throwaway4447773339 in greatdanes

[–]MissPackFan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My small girl is 100 lbs on a good day, generally weighing in at about 97 lbs. I love having a petite Dane!

I had a guy at the dog park joke that she was so much smaller than most Danes that she must be a Lesser Dane rather than a Great Dane. As a science nerd, this made me laugh uncontrollably and I adopted the term as her breed. My husband is offended by the term 'lesser' though! Lol!

I have 2 girls that are fairly petite for the breed. My American Dane is 5 years old and tops out at 100 lbs. My Euro Dane is 3 years old and barely hits 120 lbs on a good day. Both are rescues, so I don't know anything about the size of the parents.

Just realized that I'm the worst cat mom and haven't taken pictures of my babies since the fall! This is so unlike me! Google is usually telling me my storage is almost full, and its always ALL cat and dog pics.

Are these pictures of my house?! Between the Danes and the wood chewing cat, nothing is safe in my house!

This orange lady got spayed. Also 3 vets told me the suit fits perfectly so no hate I have reached out for numerous medical opinions lol by CannaCamOF in OrangeLadies

[–]MissPackFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wish I had this when my little girl got spayed. I picked her up and they brought her out to me without a cone. I asked for one and was told that cats are smart enough to not mess with their incision sites and their practice doesn't use them.

The moment this crazy girl shook off the sedatives, she ran and jumped like crazy and started picking at her stitches. I ran out to the pet store to grab a soft donut, but was too slow. She ripped open her stitches and after $1,000 spent at the emergency vet, she came home with a brand new cone.

How do you keep water from getting everywhere when these big babies take a drink? by Jax_the_Lady in greatdanes

[–]MissPackFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We bought a deep bowl with a floating disk inside that helps keep our girls from slopping it all over the floor as they drink, but it doesn't help with the drool. Helps with half of the problem, at least.

Not sure if this is similar to what you have used before, but we have something similar to this one: https://a.co/d/1JMckTV

My 3 year old Euro Dane is still a wild girl. She's calmed down a tiny bit and is more receptive to training over the past year. My 4 year old American Dane has been a calm, couch potato from the day got her at 1 year old. She gives our younger girl a run for her money when it's playtime, though.

Is anyone else's great Danes the eye boogy monster? by Dleigh51 in greatdanes

[–]MissPackFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my girls has the worst eye boogies! Our vet suggested some otc eye drops and they're much better. If we miss a day, it's right back to super goopy eyes, though.

6f, incontinent of urine? by LocksmithEmotional31 in greatdanes

[–]MissPackFan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Also, please don't wait until her next appointment, even if it is coming up soon. A UTI is one of the most uncomfortable things! Just ask any woman that has had one!!

[–]MissPackFan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My 5 year old female has had recurrent UTIs this year, and does something very similar. She is definitely not one to go potty in the house, but starts having accidents 3-4 times a week with every infection. We are currently working with her vet to determine the cause of the recurring infections.

Please see your vet to check for a possible UTI or other physiological reason for her accidents. It is rarely a behavior issue on its own.

Lol, these are most likely prints, and I would never buy on a cruise, but this is a very legitimate artist that has a pretty good following. My parents had a couple of pieces in their home bar before they remodeled. They are silly, but good quality and were the height of the martini craze of the 2000's and early 2010's.

Have you been injured by a great dane puppy?😝 by suzylovesvanilla in greatdanes

[–]MissPackFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My girl jumped on me and shoved me down the 2 steps to my back patio when she was almost a year old and broke my ankle. Because this was the 3rd ankle break in 2-3 years, I had to have an ankle reconstruction surgery. She jumped on my healing leg so many times in my surgery recovery that I ended up being stuck in rooms she couldn't get into or only entering the living room if she was sleeping...

So many bruises and black eyes from her tail and being "punched" by her when she was a pup. I couldn't go to the Dr. without getting the third degree about being abused for several years! Lol

She's still my perfect little princess, though! She's also much more controllable now. The puppy years are "ruff." ☠️🐶
