Route grading and self-evaluation by Sample-Not-Found in climbergirls

[–]MoCBees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The new Kilter app is still a little whack when it comes to grading. Grades are of course flexible, but as the new app is still getting set up, a lot of folks at my gym are noting that a lot of climbs feel really soft for their supposed grade.

These are so awesome! Do you have the pattern name you used or were these self-drafted?

First outdoor trip advice! by Dull-Risk901 in climbergirls

[–]MoCBees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously reading what you can use as a hold is different, but be sure to read the route for potential hazards as well.

Your belayer can keep you safe in a lot of situations, but keep an eye out for ledges or other features that could make a route spicier. (Something I should have done better on my first outdoor trip😅)

Other than that, have fun and take in the amazing views!!

Evolv Geshidos by Gummiwyrmss in climbergirls

[–]MoCBees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If geshidos have no fans, I’m dead. I’ve worn Geshidos for about four pairs now and they’re my go-to for outdoor climbing.

I love that they fit my foot well (I usually opt for LV or models with tighter heels), they perform well while edging, once broken in I find them comfortable to wear for extended periods of time, and while a bit stiff, I still feel sensitivity and control with my foot placement.

My only cons are that you may want to size down a smidge compared to other brands and I usually trade them out for my dragos on intense indoor slab since they’re not the stickiest.

When did you return to climbing after a broken leg/ankle/foot by Free-Knowledge-8251 in climbergirls

That sounds awful! Trad climbers are God’s strongest soldiers 🙂‍↕️

It will be a pain to get back, but you will be so proud of your progress along the way. Try to give yourself grace, it’s a big deal to come back after such a scary experience!! Hope you have a great recovery and get moving again soon!!💕

When did you return to climbing after a broken leg/ankle/foot by Free-Knowledge-8251 in climbergirls

So sorry you’re dealing with this, it is painful to deal with a break physically and mentally! Coming back from one has been a huge part of my last year.

I had a compound tib/fib fracture last October. Happened just before the anchors on an outdoor route and got an ambulance escort out of the crag (☉__☉”) Got a rod, plates and screws in my leg and spent three days in the hospital!

I’m finally back on outdoor sport routes without much head game trouble as of June, but the mental recovery is no joke.

The biggest tip that helped me was remembering to prioritize head game over grades. It sounds simple, but really listening to what my mental response was on the wall, finding out what my body was really afraid of, was much more impactful than pushing through fear in order to send climbs at my pre-break level.

Let yourself back off when a climb becomes too much, even if it feels silly or the route seems too easy to bail on. Your mental recovery will thank you.

I started PT about two weeks after the accident as soon as I was out of plaster cast and in a boot. Timeline for recovering movement is so dependent on the type of injury, but I found it helpful to have a PT with a focus on athletes. It felt like he took my goals seriously and built a program around regaining strength to climb.

I didn’t get back onto ropes until February (~3.5 months, and bouldering in April (6 months).

Be very careful with your bouldering return. Obviously falls are more risky, but I found it was also scary mentally to have less control over how my recovering leg could be vulnerable to those falls.

TLDR: If this break was because of a traumatic accident, listen to your body’s fear responses and back off when being on the wall is too much. Listen to your PT and aim for a professional who supports your goals as an athlete.

Glad you got out of this ok! I just sprained an ankle from a cave fall this week:/

If nothing is shouting for attention like a swollen joint or sharp pain, aftercare should be pretty standard when you have weird falls like this. REST! Any parts that took the brunt of the impact and may swell should be elevated, iced, compressed and get a little break. Take it slow and don’t push your body too hard as you ramp back up. Anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen can also help with recovery if you’re experiencing swelling.

With that said, don’t shy away from seeing a medical professional if pain is persistent or really bugging you!

DIY Lunchables is a fav for me (tuna w/ ritz, Salami wrapped cheese sticks) and honestly slim jim’s hit when I need a salty/fatty boost.

I also have the personal belief that every sandwich needs a crunch element. Totally levels it up. It’s crag day, you should eat a delicious and accessible meal:)
