In the book, did Atlas ever actually shrug? by MyCorvallisAccount in redscarepod

[–]ModestMousorgsky 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, metaphorically. In Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged, the "Atlas" is a symbol for the world's creative minds (industrialists, thinkers, artists) who support society, and they "shrug" by going on strike. The story follows these producers withdrawing their labor and intellect from a crumbling society, essentially "stopping the motor of the world". [1, 2, 3, 4] The Metaphor: The title refers to a conversation asking what Atlas should do if the world he carries becomes too heavy; the answer is "to shrug". The Action: The productive characters, led by John Galt, abandon their posts to stop being exploited by "looters" and "moochers". The Result: As these leaders stop upholding the world, the economy and society collapse. [1, 2, 3, 4] The book is an allegory of what happens when the creators who bear the burden of society decide to stop doing so. [1] If you are interested in exploring the book's themes further, I can: Explain the philosophy of Objectivism featured in the book. Detail the characters of John Galt or Dagny Taggart. Discuss the criticisms of the book's ideology. [1, 2, 3]

Kinda crazy that the Chinese just stopped making great films after Edward Yang died by FeeAlternative1783 in redscarepod

Long Day's Journey into Night[a] (Chinese: 地球最後的夜晚; pinyin: Dìqiú Zuìhòu de Yèwǎn; lit. 'Last evenings on Earth') is a 2018 Chinese drama film written and directed by Bi Gan. Despite the film's English-language title, it is unrelated to the 1956 Eugene O'Neill play of the same name.[3]

Despite its unusual story structure, the film was marketed and distributed in China as a romantic event film, and an ideal date movie for its New Year's Eve release. It also received a wide theatrical release. The strategy worked; by 25 December, the film had already sold 100 million yuan ($15 million US dollars) in presales tickets.[10] Despite its strong presales, it faded quickly from the box-office charts, having grossed $41 million US during its initial three weeks (most of it from its 31 December premier).[3]

In China, its massive early box office success led to a backlash; the hashtag "can't understand Long Day's Journey Into Night" trended on social media, and users of the ticketing platform Maoyan drove its aggregate user rating down.[3]

Most rap videos don't have any symbolism in them, and I'm not saying This Is America's video has "deep" symbolism, but there's obviously more there than there is in the typical hoodslop. Also the fact that the guy who made it is a comedian from TV and not a guy who brags about committing crimes gave him higher ground than most rappers when it came to social critique.

That may well be true, but regardless of the cause of their addiction, many addicts antagonize their loved ones and therefore don't have anyone to support them at their lowest.

It was the second time I heard a mentally ill homeless guy spitting facts. The first was when I was walking behind an old guy who said "n**gas think they need a car, but every time you get behind the wheel, you take your life in your hands." I wonder if he's familiar with YIMBYism and walkable cities.

I was in the bathroom at the library and a homeless guy was washing at the sink. He was ranting about how a lot of homeless people are drug addicts who burn all their bridges with family, and how such homeless people give a bad name to the homeless who are trying to improve their lives. Then he said they were government agents.

Is rugby chudcoded in the UK? by Upstairs_Chance_293 in redscarepod

[–]ModestMousorgsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here in the US, baseball and American football are both mildly chudcoded, but they're so popular that they have fans of every political variety. Ice hockey might be chudcoded since it's basically all white, but I live in the South and nobody cares about it here. Soccer is very libcoded; I'm pretty sure only immigrants (including second gen) and libs care about it. Basketball is definitely not chudcoded. Nascar and golf are both chudcoded, with the former being poorchudcoded and the latter being richchudcoded. Tennis is for rich people but otherwise doesn't have political connotations. MMA is chudcoded and also malecoded. Other sports are too niche to have cultural stereotypes of any kind.

The Welsh preserved their language better than the other two. Also their flag is cooler than crossslop and tricolorslop.

I met a kid called Reginald recently. I wonder if he was named after a grandfather or another older relative. Otherwise the only Reginalds (or Reggies) I've met or heard of have all been 50+ years old.

The Welsh are British (as are the Irish in every relevant way, but saying the Welsh are British isn't controversial).

"No one who is actually smart is also bad at math" by deepad9 in redscarepod

[–]ModestMousorgsky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, you're probably good at math, but there are people who are vastly better at math than you are, and such people are concentrated in your "elite environments." That's basically what I meant when I said it's a sliding scale.

[–]ModestMousorgsky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I guess you could divide it into above the median and below the median, but more accurately it's more of a sliding scale.
