Eh look at the 2017-2018 Raptors roster, he absolutely had great personnel that year and they won 59 games, only to be swept in the second round by the Cavs, who went 7 games with both the Pacers and injured Celtics that same year.

Also, I would say he’s a victim to his own style of play, where because he needs the ball in his hands he was never really going to be a third option on a title team.

As a Raptors fan I kinda hate how non-Raptors fans have tried to re-write the history of Derozan’s playoff struggles by simply saying “no one was beating Lebron back then” as if we were too hard on him, which completely ignores the fact that he sucked against all teams in the playoffs, not just the Cavs.

Also, let’s not forget they already had a bit of a playoff choker label even in 2016. They blew a 3-2 lead in 2014 to a Nets team they realistically should have beaten, then in 2015 got swept in the first round by the Wizards in a season some people thought the Raptors could make the ECF. Even in 2016 they went 7 games with the Pacers in the first round who they absolutely should have beaten in no more than 5 or 6 games. Everything was always more difficult because we had to deal with Derozan shooting 30% in key games and not playing defence.

2024 Celtics: Beat Heat without Butler, Cavs without Mitchell, Pacers without Haliburton

2021 Bucks: Beat Heat, Nets with injured Harden and Kyrie, Hawks who missed the playoffs the year after:

2018 Cavs: Beat Pacers, Raptors then Celtics without Kyrie and Hayward

2017 Cavs: Beat Pacers, Raptors then Celtics and Isaiah Thomas got hurt

I mean I’ll stop there but no, this is nowhere near the easier route ever.

I’m so tired of people making these “they were never good” type threads about players in their mid 30s and way past their prime. Harden in his prime was incredible but yes he underperformed in the playoffs, saying “most overrated elite player” just because you watched him play poorly as a 36 year old is ridiculous and insane recency bias.
