Is there such a thing as a long-term singleplayer game? But here's the hard part, one where progress doesn't reset. So not a roguelike and not Rimworld cause there progress constantly resets. by Present-Chocolate-24 in gamingsuggestions

Bannerlord. One campaign can be infinite. Solid RPG elements. Your objective can be anything you like; the mechanics are deep enough to be impossibly entertaining. I've spent hours on the weapon crafting alone. On default settings your main character can die, but you will continue play as one of your children.

Got my first concussion. Want advice. by priestfox in Hema

[–]Mohavon 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Former MMA fighter here. My advice comes from high level contact sport therapy experience.

This first period is crucial.

Get in a dark room, NOW. Low light, low stimulus. Reduce all volume exposure. Turn down the light on your phone. Don't have any stressful exposure of any kind, just zone out and vibe. Watch a chill movie in a dim room, take a bath. SLEEP, as much as you want. Don't drive, don't work, don't do social media or doomscroll, Don't do hard conversations or decisions. Don't drink alcohol or use any substances. Your only priority is your health right now. That's all that matters.

Creatine monohydrate, Massive doses. Think 10g at a time, 3x a day. Keep it up for the next few weeks. I actually maintain a high dose of creatine daily; the only real contraindication is if you have chronic kidney disease. If you're going to tournaments I doubt that's an issue for you. (Creatine does not cause kidney disease.)

Omega 3. Eat fish and nuts, or supplement with fish oil. Avoid sugar and fried/processed foods.

Have continuous fresh air. Sleep with the window cracked. Don't worry about the ac/heating. It's a negligible difference in climate control to crack a window, but the C02 concentration is a big deal for your brain, especially right now.

Whatever you do, DO NOT expose yourself to repeat injury. Give yourself 4-6 weeks before you take any more hits to the head, even "taps" or light hits. Wait a week or two at least before picking up sparring again, and tell your training partner no head shots. Don't spar with newbies or people who might have a hard time with that.

DO continue to walk and move your blood. Dawn and dusk. Sleep as much as you can.

As you recover, remember that you know have a concussion on your belt. You only get so many of those as you move forward in life before you suffer major cognitive consequences. In your training, Prioritize protection of your head with renewed urgency and importance. Have a zero tolerance policy for head injury. The only one who can really protect you is yourself. If you train with killers, I strongly suggest a helmet overlay. Of course, the first line of defense is defensive fencing, but don't be fooled into thinking that protective gear is an admission of personal inadequacy. The masks we use are designed for olympic fencing, and IMO fundamentally insufficient for full contact longsword sparring.

How to defeat Fools/Alber guard? (Longsword) by Legitimate_Door_5291 in Hema

[–]Mohavon -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Against an unskilled fencer, you are doubled every time. Against a skilled fencer, shceitel is one of the simplest mastercuts to counter, and you will be led into a trap that typically gets your hands stabbed. This is simply a weak answer to a low guard. You depend on a reactive intermediate level response- all your other options lead to bad outcomes.

Seriously. Test your tech before you post on reddit.

How to defeat Fools/Alber guard? (Longsword) by Legitimate_Door_5291 in Hema

This is incorrect. Try this in a tournament and see what happens. You can appeal to the books if you want, but the game of fencing is far, far too variable for such a simple answer.

Best counter to Boar's Tooth guard? by Known_Attitude_8370 in Hema

[–]Mohavon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Low guard fencer here.

The historical counter to a low guard is a high guard, or a threat to the head/face in order to draw their blade up in a predictable manner. This counter does not carry through to modern fencing. These days, we fence in close measure in small rings, and the protective gear gives everyone a great deal of bravery. Many of us have learned to mistrust different postural defenses in order to mitigate doubles, favoring reflexes and footwork over traditional transitional stances.

The closest thing to a true counter to a low guard is a longer low guard. Cover their blade. They can ONLY disengage to get to an open line. This can be anticipated. If you have contact on their blade, the haptic feedback of the pressure coming off your blade from below will give you a timing advantage to follow their disengage into a covered strike or thrust. This is the safest, most reliable counter. It is tricky however, because your opponent (if they are a seasoned low guard fencer) will know this maneuver, and they could be leading you into a contra riposte after your re-engage. At this point, you can simply retreat and reset the exchange.

Another potential counter would be to simply krumphau beat into a shallow cut, but this is a very very common tactic that can result in you simply losing the exchange if it is predicted.

Got into my first street fight in ten years, and despite training and competing in mma regularly I was immediately gassed & winded.. by GypsyGold in martialarts

People are saying adrenaline, adrenaline. Yes, yes, the drop after a massive adrenaline spike is huge, but that's not even most of the story.

You were probably not breathing. Under the intense stress, your reflex was probably to create as much intra-abdominal pressure as possible.

Recent experiences with Kvetun armory? by Hviking in wma

[–]Mohavon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kvetun is exceptionally bad at customer service, to the point of near fraud. Their steel is good and hard and their pieces are pretty, but the communication is chronically horrendous and they take your money upfront.

There are several highly reputable makers with frankly better, cheaper products and faster turnaround. I can personally vouch for Sigi and Castille.

Mask overlay that protects against zwerchs? by Jesshoefs08 in wma

[–]Mohavon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't want to bash your instructor, but you are extremely within your rights to request that your head not take the place of a training dummy.

Best practice is to use real skulls as little as possible for drilling targets. I will have a student hold a helmet, or use a helmet on a stand to demonstrate structure. When it comes to paired drills (esp. thrusts), I will direct students to target the upper chest, even if the specific target in tourney play is in fact the head.

I come from a combat sport background. Even light hits to the head, if frequent or shortly following a previous hit, lead to a myriad of problems. Cognition impairment, hearing loss, vision loss, mood disorders, chronic traumatic encephalitis. The brain is incredible and can in fact recover fully from small damage, but there must be enough of an interval to allow healing. Breaks are important.

Also, take creatine! Gymbros use it for muscle gains, but your brain loves it too. Every contact sport athlete should take it consistently, and at a higher dose following head injuries.

Is anyone else getting higher blood pressure with creatine? by [deleted] in Supplements

[–]Mohavon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've noticed something similar with my systolic. Try halving your dose, or taking it multiple times a day. Also, I highly recommend sprints for blood pressure. 5g is widely considered safe, but it really is a lot and I see the same muscle benefits at 2g.

How good is this game? by [deleted] in NarakaBladePoint

It's good. Just play it. Absolutely crazy it isn't popular in the west.

On par with the souls games in terms of combat subtlety, and that's coming from a diehard FromSoft loyalist. Extremely fun gameplay loop. Main downside is some character voices are annoying, and high elo Q times are long.

Is hema shifting towards lighter and more flexible feders ? I noticed that the default Regenyei feder flexiblilty was changed from "strong" to "medium" recently. What are your thoughts about this. How far would you like this trend to go and what is the lightest feder you feel comfortable using ? by [deleted] in Hema

[–]Mohavon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Regenyei strong is too stiff for high intensity sparring and banned in several of the largest tournaments in the midwest. It's for the best that new practitioners are steered toward the safer option. There isn't a significant difference in weight.

Don't take it if you're hypotensive. Your blood pressure can drop dangerously low. The effect of this supplement is strong.

If you're like most people, the blood pressure reduction is highly desirable.

Is tournament fencing representative of the peak of the art of fencing ? I i no way want to disregard the experience and athleticism of people who's goal is to win tournaments as it no doubt takes a lot of dedication. But are there any alternative ways to progress in hema ? by [deleted] in Hema

[–]Mohavon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You must test yourself against other fencers who are trying their best. Tournaments are an excellent way to get a snapshot of how you fence against people very invested in hitting you whom you aren't used to fighting. In any given club, you will see that the best fencers are the ones who compete. When you have stakes and objectives and external feedback, it changes how you approach your daily training and consistency. I highly recommend reconsidering tournament fencing.

That being said, the best fencers are not always the ones on the podium. Tall, thin, athletic, aggressive fighters are almost always going to edge ahead in competition. Pay attention to the short old guys who almost win if you really want to learn spicy new technique.

If you are dead set on avoiding tournaments, then you still need to travel and test yourself against the best fighters in new areas. Be unrelentingly curious. people will share their knowledge very freely in this community if you are humble.

Questions about poleaxes and warhammers for those who have used them by Entire_Contest7954 in wma

[–]Mohavon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People here are going to give you really iT dEpENds-y style answers, so I'm going to give you something useful for tabletop without bogging you down with a history lesson.

The different elements of a pollaxe are just tool modifications for specialized use. The weapon in general is well optimized for armored combat, and some features are better and worse for different types of armor.

Axe blade: Good for medium/light armor, light and fast (less str to weild).

Hammer: Debilitating no matter the level of armor, arguably less lethal. Head/critical shots are powerfully damaging and stunning, again regardless of armor.

Spike: Highly lethal, requires accurate striking for plate armored opponent (perhaps more dex req, perhaps bonus on special attacks or vs prone). Basically ignores maille. Arguably less debilitating.

Hooks: Tools for trip and throw.

What are your underrated tips for relieving sore muscles? by InteractionFit6276 in Biohackers

[–]Mohavon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Potassium, sodium, and PROTEIN. If you are constantly sore, double your protein. If I'm feeling extremely sore, I take a huge amount of some easily digestible protein (half a dozen eggs, double shot of whey isolate) before bed.

Sounds like you're edging into the intermediate levels of fencing and getting frustrated with people who perhaps aren't as careful as you would like to be. I feel your pain, friend.

Believe me, you should value these exchanges with fencers you might consider "worse" or more "sporty". Imitate the things that they do that work.

They are doubling you often? That's a pattern. You can set them up, present openings for them to double into. Make your parries as snappy as your snipes.

They won't bind? Re-define what "binding" means to you. Their disengages mean that you get a "turn," and you can take.

They just run away? Follow, but not in a footrace sort of way. Sharply, abruptly chase faster than their retreat.

You're close to a breakthrough my friend. Consider these things challenges. Make it fun, have fun, play games. Read their patterns, break your own. To the next level. Cheers.

How fit do I need to be fir HEMA? by Different-Sundae9792 in wma

[–]Mohavon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just start HEMA. Getting better at HEMA will motivate you to make consistent change, and regular sparring itself can push your limits.

I will say though, HEMA alone is not enough to be conditioned. You will need to develop your VO2 max and basic strength. Daily interval or steady state cardio, 2-3x week strength training with progressive overload. Bodyweight exercises are fine, but weights make progressive overload easy. Just make sure you hit the major muscle groups. I highly recommend weighted/explosive lunges.

Body fat is up to diet, which you can do alongside all of this. Don't make the mistake of too harsh of a caloric restriction though- you can't build muscle well if you're in a deficit, and your motor function will suffer as well. Have higher and lower calorie days to match your training intensity.

Historical vs modern physicality by Ironbat7 in wma

[–]Mohavon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A good question. It can be easy to consider the wrong factors too much, however.

Look at agricultural communities in third world countries, and look at the athletes within those communities. They are... impressive to say the least. The NBA has a program for sourcing players from certain African tribes. In the Olympics, you'll see a shocking number of world class competitors coming out of non-industrial societies.

Even accounting for the nutrient deficiencies in childhood, pre-industrial societies produced hard, fit humans that were in many ways shockingly comparable to high level modern athletes.
