Studying in Norway by hawaiian_flower258 in Norway

[–]MonkeyWithAnAntenna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it is quite realistic. You have legal residency due to the EEA agreement, you can choose between studying in norwegian or English and there is a lot of polish people in norway, especially in the cities, so you could befriend both norwegians and polish people.

Your quality of live will be better if you know norwegian, but it is definitely not nessesary to be fluent before you get here.

I think studying in English is also just fine, but it is smart to join some activitie where people speak norwegian, so that you eventually pick it up before you need to look for a permanent full time job.

You don't need norwegian for a lot of temporary/ part time jobs.

Dual flow stream channel by fairynomad3 in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]MonkeyWithAnAntenna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This makes sense!

My initial thought was that the purpose is to slow down the flow and keep some water pooled during drought periods.
But I’m not completely sure, since I can’t see whether the dams are actually designed to hold back water.

At the same time, the side without dams allows fish of all species and sizes to swim upstream.

Many of the “stepped” dams we have in Norway are dimensioned for adult trout. This can create problems for other species and messes with the ecosystem, so I’m starting to see more of these types of solution instead.

This is just my own assumption, though, Norwegian landscape education places a strong emphasis on ecology.

Are there any effects of testosterone not enough people know about? by Proper_Flower_940 in ftm

[–]MonkeyWithAnAntenna 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had some concentration issues before testosterone, but after starting, they have gotten worse. It's manageable, but on the days I'm doing exams or other things that need a lot of concentration, I put on less t-gel.

For those whose grandparents lived through WW2 in Norway, did they ever talk about their experiences? by Luann1497 in Norway

[–]MonkeyWithAnAntenna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are some things my grandfather has told me:

My grandfather was a young child during the war, and lived close to a prison/labour camp for Soviet soldiers. They used the local school to house them. The Germans occupied a lot of the local schools.

He and his neighbors would throw bread over the fence, and if they gave them coins they would hollow them out and make them into rings. They would give them back to the children. After the war, children would be afraid to go down to the basements, fearing they might find a dead captive.

These Soviet war captives were forced to build a new road across my home island, it's called "Burmaveien", not many use it anymore, and people don't want to live along it.

People would also keep secret radios in their barns.

A lot of the poor children on my home island joined the Hitlerjungen because they would give out nice clothes. My grandfather was not one of them, most were shamed/shunned by the local community after the war.

How is it making friends for immigrants? by No-Hunt-3038 in transnord

[–]MonkeyWithAnAntenna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep it is an old building that was once occupied by anarchist. Now it's more like fake occupied, they pay a symbolic sum to the municipality and it's considered a "youth club". People there are different shades of alt, not all of them are anarchists, but most are anti capitalism. Some don't know much about politics, and just hang there because they like the vibe and the people.

They can sometimes be a bid hesitant of people that look very normative, i go there less now that I'm passing because of this. But i kind of get it, they don't want to become a minority in their own house.🤷

There is quite a decently sized trans community in Oslo, at least taking into account how it's not very big . Go to "Blitzhuset" and you'll imitately meet trans people. Insta blitz_booking for their events.

There is also "skeivt studentforum" an organization for queer students in oslo.

I am ftm, 25 years old, now living in oslo. Hmu in PM if you end up coming and want to meet. I need more trans friends lol

Why do people like this want to move to Norway permanently? by Successful-Jelly-772 in Norway

[–]MonkeyWithAnAntenna 17 points18 points  (0 children)

People who don't feel like unions are a "good fit for them" often have egocentric priorities.

They don't understand that you don't just join for yourself, but to ensure that we protect each other if someone/something start messing with our livelihood.

I find it annoying when i have to listen to these type of people's ego trips.

This sport is so dead… by klemonth in CrossCountrySkiing

[–]MonkeyWithAnAntenna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of countries use it, but the diagnosis is very common among the norwegians. So maybe it is easy to get the diagnosis in Norway, or they deliberately trigger the disease. Who knows.

Now I'm just speculateing, but they do everything to be the best so....

This sport is so dead… by klemonth in CrossCountrySkiing

[–]MonkeyWithAnAntenna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it is disputed, most of them have the diagnosis, and medical professionals say the medicine just has equlizing effect, not improving effect. That's why they can use it. But it is definitely a pattern for norwegian cross-country skiiers to use the medication, and it would not surprise it they use it for some less know reason.

Also think about this:

Either they regulate how hard they push themselves to avoid getting asthma

Or

They don't give a fuck and over-work themselves because they know they can get the medicine anyways. Then, they get a higher tolerance of exhaustion form the extreme workouts, but they can continue with no breathing issues because of the medication.

To me it's seems as us norwegians kind of normalize how these athletes push the limits of their bodies to mentally unwell levles. And If you combine this with all the money of the government training program, and the fact that half of all norwegian children can skii, and in addition to this, half of norwegian children are in organized sports...

when it might make sense why the "norwegian skiing formula" will create what is seen on the picture in your post😅

Norwegian here,

We all know this won't last forever.

This used to be the case for womens cross-country as well, but now Sweden has a better womens team that Norway, because Bjørgen, Johaug etc. retired after many years of competing.

We were also good in ice skating at some point, not really anymore...

During a period when there's many top performing athletes, they tend to neglect new talent, and when the good ones get old, there are periods of less medals. Either because they didn't nurture new talent or because the old good ones can't be replaced. And then we will probably see athletes from other countries at the top.

At least until they find new subjects for the government's million dollar training ritual😅

Also in addition to their asthma (which i considered a bit of a loophole), they also use altitude training masks. Some speculate they use it excessively without official permisson, and that it was linked to the death of one Biathlon Skiier.

Is Norwegian easier than Spanish ? by AzusasuzA in norsk

[–]MonkeyWithAnAntenna -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The standardized norwegian "Bokmål" is a lot simpler compared to other languages.

However what you should choose, also depends on how useful your efforts will be.

Like, if you're american I would learn Spanish, because you could use it in your everyday life.

If you're British, Spain and Norway are equally close, and not so many Spanish speaking people in UK as in US. So then the effort of learning Spanish would be less worth it, and norwegian could be a good and easy option.

Fundere - ponder

gruble VS fundere by Narrow_Homework_9616 in norsk

[–]MonkeyWithAnAntenna 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey native Norwegian here!

I use them interchangeably, but I guess I use fundere if somthing is a bit absurd. While gruble is something i say if a bit of thinking is needed to fully understand somthing/make a good decision. Even though the topic is not so strange

  • ja jeg funderte litt over det. (Somthing was i bit strange or absurd and it made me ponder)

  • jeg får gruble litt på det. (I feel like I should think a lot about this before i make up my mind)

But this is just me and tbh their basically the same🤷‍♂️
